Right it's not exactly the same, but they share the same block and lower end, which is what failed on our minivan motor.
Why don't you buy your wife a car SHE wants and keep the GXP that YOU want? My G8 is MY car to drive and my wife has the POS Nissan minivan to drive.

Fiance drives a 2009 White Camry 4cyl. I drive my G8 GT.
Fiance takes the G8 out sometimes when I have her blocked in the driveway. She has commented that she enjoys the looks she gets when people see it's a chick driving that big rumbling sedan down the road.
