View Full Version : BMR Sway Bars Kick Ass!

SRG963

Brand: BMR Fabrication

Price: Group Buy for a great deal!

Purchased From: Kyle at BMR fabrication

Installation: Rear was very easy, took less than 15 min. Front took a little time and a lot of patience. Took as much time to get the OEM bar out as it did to get the beefy BMR bar in. We found holding our left foot up, waving our right fist around and cursing at it was the magic combo.

Installation Time: I think it took around 3 hours for both, taking our time and not rushing anything.

Any Installation Tips You Have: Have someone else do the front bar, anyone can do the rear.

http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab359/SRGSRG963/BMR_Sway_Bars.jpg

Front Sway Bar Settings
Hole 1 - 87% stiffer than OE bar
Hole 2 - 137% stiffer than OE bar

Rear Sway Bar Settings
Hole 1 - 91% stiffer than OE bar
Hole 2 - 164% stiffer than OE bar
Hole 3 - 286% stiffer than OE bar

Quality of Part: (rate 1-10) 10. Very good welds and excellent fit/finish. The only thing I would change would be to add 90 degree fittings on the front bushing brackets to make greasing them easier. We tried to do this, but couldn't get the new ones to fit properly.

Product Performance: (rate 1-10) 10

Any Other Comments: Worth every penny! If you drive mostly on smooth pavement and want to stay very flat around corners, I'd suggest these bars on the stiffest settings. If you live where the road is broken or rough, you may want to start with the softer setting.

I'm glad you like them Shawn. I feel that my staggered setup (wanders a little) could really benefit from these. Sounds like it worked out well for your staggered setup...?

This a must do for me. I've now seen maybe 15 positive reviews on these.

Randy the swaybars won't fix the wander, it seems like the toe in needs to be increased, that keeps the car traveling in a straight line.

I want to get these swaybars too, it seems like a good upgrade for the money. Thanks for the comments Shawn.

One of these days, I have to get my car to someone who is great with alignments - my dealer is NOT. Been this way since I bought the car. With my driveshaft replacement, everything else was supposedly checked. Time for another opinion. LOL.

I believe you need the tires to hang free when installing the bars, so a lift makes it much easier than jack and stands.

These bars really made a big difference, the car feels like it's glued to the road. I was close to doubling the posted suggested speed around corners today

Good Year did a decent job aligning my GT. I could also pay them an additional $40 to set the car to exactly what I wanted. I would suggest someone that offers a lifetime alignment if you plan to keep the car a long time like I am.

I put the same set on my car in the garage by myself. You have to jack the passenger side up about 1.5 to 2 feet to have clearance to remove the bar. Both tires have to come off and you have to remove the drivers tierod end to clear the bar. Overall it was not hard - just time consuming. I also have the sub-frame connectors and tunnel brace. The car corners flat with the rear kicking out on WOT when it shifts gears - no rear shake/shimmy like stock!

Good to hear all of the positive reviews. I should receive mine on Tuesday!! Now I just wish the front was as easy to replace as the rear.

Installed mine this past Sun and agree with everyone else. A great product for a great price, espeically if you got in on the intro deal. This has got to be the best bang for your buck suspension mod. Only spent $300 and you can really feel the difference on these bars reducing body roll and keeping the car neutral. A CAI costs about the same and doesn't come close in the ROI department comparatively. I also agree with the OP about the front bar. Kinda wish I paid someone else to do it. I don't think my 5 hours of struggling with the front bar was worth whatever money I would have had to pay a shop to do it.

I just installed these with the sub frame connectors and rear trailing arms last Friday. The car feels completely different now. I will say that the rear trailing arms area bitch to put in trying to get the knuckle pushed back in place. All in all it took about 6 hours for all the parts to get replaced. I used a lift a local hobby shop or I am sure it would have taken longer in the garage.

The only thing removed (besides the front tires) was the passenger side tie rod for clearance after the BMR bar was practically in place, which was then marked and put back exactly where it was before. Rather than unbolting anything for clearance in the rear, simply slide the rubber mounts off the pipes and gently press the drivers side pipe down to slide the bar in, then the other side is easy to place.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone, the introductory pricing will last through the end of the week and I would recommend ordering them soon because our inventory of these sway bars are running low and once the stuf we have in stock sells it will be another couple weeks before we do a production ruun of them. If you would like to get in on the sale either place your order online or give me a call here at the shop.

Thanks,
Kyle

I've put several thousand miles on these swaybars, and so far, no noises at all. I've not had any problems with them and would suggest them as the first suspension mod.

The difference with the BMR bars - night and day! No lift around corners and drifting is so much smoother without all the body roll. Plus, the car feels much more solid at higher speeds.

Thanks BMR!

Just ordered mine... I'll do them myself as I trust very few people to work on my car and one of them is Modern Muscle in Oswego IL which is a 3 hour drive for me. 6 hours in the car burning gas and then paying them or 4 hours (max) for me and a buddy to install them? Hmm... No brainer for me. Plus, I've been under this beast several times replacing components. Ugh...

Wish I'd have gotten the super special price.

The bars look like they could hold up a bridge btw. I did find a couple of 1" gouges through the powdercoat, so if anyone has touched up a set of the red ones please post up. I may use some silver hammertone that worked wonders for the last fence I built *scratches chin like a supervillain*

All that aside, I'll chime in once I get these monsters mounted. If they work like they look I'll have a smile burned into place in about a week.

Maybe the G8 gang has a higher parent percentage as an owner group. As the parent of a two year old I can attest to the attainable level of understanding. A short wait for brackets is nothing compared to toilet training someone who would really rather do anything else and has a scream like a cougar caught in a wood chipper.

Each car community is different from each other and working here at BMR, I deal with anything from serious drag radial racers to the G8 community and it is crazy how different they all are. I like the laid back atmosphere of the G8 community. I am young enough that I don't have to worry about any kids but taking care of myself can be a pain sometimes. :D

I just took it around the block and so far I'm VERY happy.

Agreed! It took me longer than I thought, but I took my time and made sure everything was right.

Hard to believe your engineers thought the saddles these bars came with originally were going to be strong enough when the stock saddles were considerably stronger with less of a bar.

The new ones with the gussets added look like they're MORE than up to the task.

I would like to see some 90º grease zurks (sp?) on them though.

Well made, fit like they came off of it and MAN does it handle. Flattens it RIGHT OUT!

These with my Pedders struts make this car STUPID! It's not anymore harsh a ride IMO either.

You would be suprised, we have used the same sway bar brackets on a couple different sway bars we have done in the past without any issue. The new ones are definitely up to the task and should be able to withsatnd anything you can throw at it. I told my guys to think about doing the 90 degree zerk fitting, but I know many times that the straight zerk fitting is what comes with the sway bar bushing/bracket kits we use with our sway bar. Most people are suprised about how little the sway bars affect driveability/feel of the car other then when the cars is being pushed hard.

Using a grease gun with a flexable 18" hose isn't too bad, but the 90 degree angle would be sweet.

Either way I still love these sway bars........ out of mile 40 mile ride to work I have about 10 miles of back country rodes that are fun now.

Did most of you use bolt hole #1? Bolt hole #2?

Now then....would you guys offer up your insights on which sway bar bolt holes you used (#1 or #2) and your driving impressions? I didn't see any comments on this thread.

Did most of you use bolt hole #1? Bolt hole #2?

I think most of us went with the stiffer setting

I think most of us went with the stiffer setting

I went #2 on both of them...that didn't come out right.

I just finished installing the upgraded saddles, and ALL of the front end noises went away.

Thanks again to BMR for stepping up to the plate on this issue. It's a shame that customer service like that is so rare, but it is greatly appreciated.

With most having installed them at the #2 bolt hole......what are the driving impressions at that setting? Are there any "negative" effects at all?

you might find that the back end get looser a little sooner in wet weather (when cornering). That's about it.

Most people end up using the stiffest hole, honestly you won't notice too much driveability difference between the two holes unless you are pushing the car pretty good then the stiffest setting will really start to shine. I alway recommend to use the stiffest setting because the G8's are so big and heavy and have so much body roll that they really need as much help as you can give them.

Honestly they are a bit lighter but it wouldn't be more than 4-5lbs at the most so the weight difference is pretty negligible.

Most you gents mentioned the term "patience" as part of this process. Is that this forum's potically correct term for cursing and kicking a cat or two durining the install? Because a cold front moved in with rain -- will I go to hell for all the !#$%^&**&^%$#!! cursing I did this Sunday morning?

I had cold wind and rain sneak up my "freaking butt crack" this morning as I lay on the ice cold concrete!!! I didn't notice THAT DAMN PART in the *&^%$#!!#$% installation instructions Kyle!! :-)

Now I can start re-attaching end links, bushings, grease, etc.

Juuuuuuuuust finished washing the G8 after swapping the bars. Not bad for four hours' time including an oil change. Maybe we do get better with age :D FWIW undoing the driver's side radius rod helped me quite a bit up front. The rear was a twenty-minute dream job. Didn't even crack out the air tools.

This is our ride to church so I'll see if it handles like a bat outta hell tomorrow. Judging by the diameter differences from stock to BMR I don't anticipate disappointment.

BTW I had no idea the car is this easy to work on. I almost look forward to doing headers/cam/head work now. So it begins...

Mine scratched a bit easily as well. Actually, I thought it was paint and that I had misread it as PC back when I bought the set. Stuff comes off pretty easily on mine, and a bit was missing when I unboxed the bars for install. The bars aren't in plain sight so I chucked them in without much concern. Lord knows flat-tracking over the gravel paths that pass as roads around here will probably take off some more over time. I figure I'll touch them up with something when I next put the car in the air if it bugs me.

I ordered mine soon after buying the car. I remember complaining about the body roll before, and now its doesn't bother me in routine driving. I have both at the stiffest setting.

I know that I would never do this install again. I'd rather do and engine swap. I think it took 5 hours to get the front one end using a lift and that's after I cut the original one out. About an hour of this time was removing and reinstalling my turbo kit components. The frustration level was the highest I've had on any car labor I've done.

You should have unbolted the engine and lifted it an inch. The stock one literally fell out and the new one took less than 3 min to get in after doing that.

Is your popping coming from the front or the back?

If you're running the BMR end links, torque spec is 25 lb-ft for the link nuts. If you've still got the stock end links, the nuts probably don't need to be much tighter than that. I'm getting a popping from my front left end, actually, and switching back and forth between the BMR endlinks and the stock endlinks didn't change it. So I'm not sure where it's coming from.

PS, you can find 90 degree zerks at Advanced Auto, which make greasing them a little easier.
