Default steering wheel controls stopped working

I don't know how common this is but I figured I'm post it here.

So my LH steering wheel controls don't function - which wouldn't normally be a problem but it also means I can't turn off the DIC message for my low tire as that stays on the screen. And I can't get to menus either.

started acting up a month ago - now it doesn't work at all. Otherside is fine.

    Is this common?

As I understand it they are CAN Buss modules - and fairly easy to replace. SO I'll do that first I guess. My other thought is clockspring - since they don't light up either and haven't for a while now.

When my clock-spring failed, it was a progressing snowball of dysfunction. If I remember right, the right side kept working. At least initially anyway... I'd have to look back at my old posts. There was a while where turning one way would cause the radio to switch stations.

Is the clock spring repair expensive/difficult to do?

The part is a couple hundo. There is some sort of calibration to be done after install, probably VIA tech 2 or something. I had the dealer install it after I found the best price I could online. Physical install didn't look too bad. I'd done the steering wheel previously which went find and the clockspring isn't much further in. I think the dealer install cost about the same as the part.

so 700 dollar repair. I wonder if my scan tool will do the calibration.

Oh question did it make the car undriveable? I mean not having the menu function is annoying as all get out - but doesn't really affect the car function.

Should not have to re-program for a vehicle that was not in an accident etc.

The SAS doesn't always need to be reprogrammed but I can see that issue if it comes up.

List is $500 on the coil...I bought one for less before.

I think the part you need is 92234063 if that is the case, but i can't confirm if there is more than one available.

So, other than being in an accident, what causes the clock spring to fail and how common is it?

Probably internal wear or a connection in the wheel came loose. But that is rare.
