Thread: '96 Silverado rad issue

    Exclamation '96 Silverado rad issue

    When I got the truck it was low on water. Yeah, no coolant. Saw that filling and running the engine it would bubble out the top. Truck is not over heating.
    The system is holding pressure, actually too good. The over flow tank isn't being used. Hose is not plugged. Small hole in rad neck isn't plugged.
    Held pressure over night. Changed rad caps. Same thing.

    Whats going on?

    Just to eliminate things, heater blows hot?

    I don't know that a clogged heater core would cause what you're experiencing... BUT since it's water and not coolant I think it will be tough to diagnose because you won't have that sweet coolant smell either in the cab (heater core) or exhaust (head gasket)... so I'd go on any lead you can find... heat not blowing hot would be a starting point.

    I misread - when you said bubbling out the top, I thought you meant that the coolant was pushing through the pressure cap on the rad instead of going back to the overflow, that the system was overpressuring with the cap on, but not filling the reservoir... Did you mean it's bubbling out the top during warmup with the cap off, but then with the cap on you know it's expanding but never makes it to the overflow res?

If your heat isn't working, is it possible that the system is using the heater core (air pocket) as an expansion tank with the rad cap on? (Yes I realize that ideally there is no "vent" in the core, so compression/expansion would be at play... unless you have a leak/crack in the core.) I'd think path of least resistance would push fluid into the overflow instead of into the heater core - but water does strange things. I'm assuming you have stock radiator still and stock (replaced) coolant cap.

    Vehicle radiator hoses heat up in the correct order? IE the one after the thermostat stays cool until thermostat opens, but the top hose gets warm quick.

    Pressure in the radiator doesn't get released. I have to wait until it cools.

    Ray were you able to check and see if the rad hoses heat up in the correct order? (verify Thermo is working correctly)
