Had this happen when I had something on the passenger seat and moved it during startup. Must have confused the computer. Fault light stayed on for a couple days until the car sat in the sun and got warm?
You may have two different things happening at the same time. I know that there is some issues with the passenger air bag module. Do a search for air bag fault and find my post of what I had to end up doing to get it fixed.
As for the P0171 code. Might be a oxygen sensor starting to give up the ghost. I would reset them and see what happens.

I have the same Airbag Fault light but a different code. I have the U0170 code and no idea how to fix it
