    Default Advice needed: Flickering lights

Anybody had issues with flickering headlights after a cam swap?

Back in 2011 I did my first DOD cam swap and its been happening to an extent ever since. It happens mainly at light throttle at low speeds. if I was on a lone interstate at 70mph at night, the flickering would be non-existent. As best I can tell, it really only affects the headlights, the instrument cluster is not bright enough for me to tell and my radio doesn't wig out either.

I rechecked my engine grounds and even re-seated a few of them this week but saw the symptoms last night. The battery is less than a year old. Advance auto 850CCA store brand. I did throw in some LED fog lights but it was only the bulbs no wiring changes.

Does authorized repair shops or dealer service depts have diagnostic tools that can trace flickering like this?
Its not a terrible issue, more irritating. I just pray the car never stalls or something due to it like when I'm 1319ft from the Christmas tree at WOT.

Any advice for trouble shooting would be greatly appreciated.

What's the alternator putting out at idle?

I've had the exact same experience! I replaced my battery too. My research has brought up multiple causes; everything from poor contact with the ground wire on the frame to a bad voltage regulator on the alternator that the computer doesn't detect. My last GM dealership said that in some cases it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack since the tune plays a role in voltage regulation too.

When I see Rick Crawford later this year I am going to have him check it out and install a new alternator with the hopes that will solve the problem.

Thanks everybody for the input and advice.

I've had the flickering with a Livernois tune, PatG tune and now RCR tune.

I think I'm going to have the alternator checked out when I pay (cause I'm lazy) to have my Camaro Diff installed in a couple of weeks.

Maybe wire up a multimeter to 12v in the car and see if system voltage fluctuates while its happening... Or truly is just a headlight thing...

Mine does it too, ever since I started modding it. Doesn't bother me enough to mess with though. Mine doesn't so much flicker as just dim a little from time to time for no apparent reason.

I think that is more accurate too. It dims out more than totally cut off than back on.

does your dimming happen every time you drive at night? Mine does mainly if I'm driving in neighborhoods and two lanes with low speed limits and lots of starting stopping.

I really haven't paid that much attention to when it happens. I guess now that you mention it, it's usually after a stop when I have applied some very light throttle. I never notice it just cruising. It doesn't do it that often either plus it's just noticeable; not like the lights go way down or anything.

I verified last night my lights flicker/dim even on high beam.

On low beam it's more pronounced than high though. Next step is to get alternator checked out.

I have also experienced the dimming too; mainly while idling at a traffic light. I actually had another driver flag me down to tell me that I was inadvertently flashing my lights at him so I think it happens while I'm driving too.
