Running without TPMS detunes our cars???

In the process of pricing out a winter tire/wheel package, so I stopped by Tire Discounters today to compare pricing vs what I found on Tire Rack. I was asking lots of questions and heard something I've never heard before today. The guy behind the counter told me "If you don't get the TPMS with new wheels, the engine will automatically be detuned. Its a safety feature that GM puts into their performance cars like the CTS-V, Corvettes, and your G8s. So if you want to sacrifice some performance during the winter, you can go without the TPMS."

I told him I've never heard of that, but he claimed that it is true.

I'm on a tight budget for a winter package, so I want to avoid the TPMS option if at all possible. Everything I've read on here just says that you get the warning light - nothing about actual loss of power or the engine being detuned. Is there any truth to this??

I call complete bullshit......I've been running without them for 11 months now.......as long as the little tire light being on the dash,not bothering you....it won't hurt anything. That's linked to the bcm...I don't think it's even connected to the ecm or tcm. I haven't seen anything in HPt....that would show otherwise...
He's just trying to sell you something else.....

Sounds BOGUS!!! Did the saleman also say 'you don't need snow tires because all-season radials are designed for snow' ?

I ran with out the TPMS for over 2 months, not different about the car at all. That guy must work on commission

and is worried about making money vs' telling the truth.

My car doesn't seem terribly detuned; no TPMS for a long time.

I feel ashamed that they said that. Im an assistant manager at a Discount tire in MI and it is not necessary for you to have tpms. My winters are going on next week and I wont be running my sensors either. If you can drive to livonia MI i can take care of you. Also we are not on commission at Discount tire either.

Thanks for the feedback guys. This guy was the general manager at this particular Tire Discounters, so I'm pretty disappointed in him trying to jack me around like that. I thought it sounded like a load of crap. That pretty much assures them that they'll never receive business from me in the future.

By the way - he wanted $71 PER WHEEL for the TPMS...

Don't forget to tell him he is a bum and lost your business. BTW, we have a vendor here who sells the TPMS sensors at a great price.
