If I'm cruising along the highway at, say, 75 in 5th in sport mode and need/want more speed quickly is it OK on the tranny to tap it down to 4th and accelerate? IF so, is there a top-end speed for 4th (aside from hitting the redline in RPM's)?

Sure it is. 4th goes well over 100 mph. 3rd goes just over 100 I think. It'll probably balk if you tried to shift to 2nd.

Just dont keep your hand on the gear shift if your in manual mode going from 2 gear going about 35-40 because it will throw you back and your hand will drop it to first gear and go wide open, as I did by mistake a few summers ago in OKC getting on I35 and it took a second or two to figure out what I did and did a fast upshit or two.
Lots of noise and not going anywhere, what a dumb ass I was, but lesson learned. Not one of my finer moments, lol

Thanks for the replies. I'd like to think I know a fair amount about cars (done a lot of repairs/upgrades myself over the years) but transmissions remain somewhat of a mystery to me and I just wanted to be sure.
