I was anxious to get to the track this year, now that we have added the cam/springs/lifters. Circumstances and weather didn't give us as much street tuning time as I wanted. We did more data logging during three passes, and I'm sure that we'll have some more adjustments to make before, and on, dyno day on May 16. That should result in even more improvement.
We arrived at Byron for only the 2nd day the track has been open this year. We had a strong wind blowing nearly the entire day. It was consistently 15-20 mph, with occasional gusts a little higher. Since it was coming out of the south, it was a direct headwind. Even the tower commented that we have a "two tenths wind today." I think two tenths & two mph is likely about what we were losing.
For my first run, I was a bit gun-shy. I had just watched Gary Fowler break his GTO on the starting line, and I didn't want to do the same. I launched at only 3500 and bogged the engine badly. I only had a 2.118 60', and ran 12.858 @ 112.35. Not exactly what I was hoping for with all the upgrades!
At least my first R/T of the year was .046. I guess for an old guy, my reflexes aren't too bad.
Run #2 I got a Check Engine light while approaching the line, which made me a bit nervous. It turned out to be a P0300 Random Misfire (I get a few of those now while idling with the new cam). I jumped the light, only improved my 60' slightly to 2.092, and only ran 12.785 @ 112.31. Still not what I was hoping for.
Run #3 finally got a little better. I got a better launch, and managed a 1.747 60'. I hit all of my shifts pretty well, but was just hitting the rev limiter on two of them (the tachometer needle can't wind as fast as the engine does, it's 700-800 rpm slow in 1st gear, and 400-500 rpm slow in 2nd gear). I managed a decent 12.476 @ 110.67. That still wasn't a PB though, and we put in a lot of time & money to upgrades.
Run #4, I got rushed to line and tried to launch too hard, which meant spinning and fishtailing off the line. Then I hit the rev limiter on each shift too, which killed the ET. I ran 12.961 @ 110.15. Not Happy!
Run #5 I calmed down a good bit. I cut a nice .013 R/T, and had a slightly better 1.843 60' time. I was racing a modded '12 Camaro SS with big DRs & skinnies, and I wanted to beat him bad. I had him for awhile off the line due to R/T, but he got around me on the top end. Since he ran 11.874 @ 118.56, I wasn't embarrassed. I ended up with 12.603 @ 111.33, but still didn't have a PB.
Run #6 I screwed up again, launched too high and hit the rev limiter twice, giving me a 1.988 60' with 12.755 @ 111.65. I ran around to hot-lap too see if I could finally do something right.
Run #7 was magic (even though I did red light)! I had a solid launch, which got me a 1.693 60'. I nailed all of my shifts & the car was pulling really strong. I was rewarded with a 12.191 @ 112.35 for a new PB!
Run #8 I fell off a little bit. I had a decent .074 R/T, and 1.795 60', but hit the limiters a bit again, and fell off to 12.641 @ 110.33.
Run #9 was the most fun race I had all day! I ran Brandon Miller's '05/'06 GTO in a good old fashioned door-to-door nail-biter (he beat me by only .0028, and his PB of 11.997 @ 113.84). I cut a great .007 R/T, and a decent 1.773 60'. My shifts were all good, but not quite as fast as my PB run. As we were approaching the traps, I was ahead, but Brandon was pulling on me. I was even leaning forward hard in my seat trying to get the win, but I barely missed out. I had a 12.328 @ 112.97 for my best mph of the day (I think the wind was down a bit for that run).
Run #10 started well, but I got into the limiter of 2-3 AND missed my shift. I felt like I was on the verge of breaking something so I let off and eased it down the track. Turned out nothing was broken but the driver!
It was a fun day, but I can't wait to tweak the tune, and get back for a day with better air, and less wind!
