I bought my G8 in December 2012 and have loved every minute of it.... However the more I drove the car the more I noticed the dreaded 2-3 shift flare. Mine was very random, and would occasionally happen in different shifts. Mine seemed different than what other described. Under mild acceleration, it would shift 1-2 fine. The at the 2-3 shift it would almost "hang" or pause shifting like the car went into neutral, then it would slam into 3rd. Well I fianlly got a chance to get it into the dealer a few weeks ago. I dropped it off at Dick Genthe Chevrolet in Southgat MI on Monday April 8th (for the 2-3 flare, a lound clicking in the shifter when shifting into R or D and a few other misc things). They did NOT offer me a loaner car (since I had access to my Sister-In-Laws new Ford Flex I used that). After not hearing anything from them until I called on Friday April 12th, I was told, they might be able to "review it today" At that point I told them "Don't f*&%#@g touch my car! I will be in later this afternoon to pick it up and take it to a dealer that will service my car in a more timely manner". I figured having the car almost 5 days was long enough to have at least "reviewed it". About 1 hour later, I had this strage feeling.... I gave a call back to Dick Genthe to speak with the Service Manager. Once transfered to him, I explained I had told the service rep to leave my car alone and that I wanted it ready to pick up after 4:30 without having to wait an hour for them to find paper work and fumble around looking for the keys. He then asked me what the problem was, I explained... He than said, well we have your car on a lift and a tech is looking at it now. I kept my cool (to a point) and told him to take it down immediately! They would have torn it apart on a Friday afternoon and left me completly screwed over the weekend, even though I had told them not to do anything....
I contacted a buddy of mine and told him what was going on, he called me a dumb a$$ and then told me he does transmission service at Taylor Chevy (just a few miles away). I knew he was a mechanic, I just didn't know where he was working....... Oops. So on to Monday April 15th. I took my car into Taylor Chevrolet, was taken care of in a much more friendly manner, was issued a 2013 Malibu as a free loaner car and sent on my way. My friend stayed in contact with me letting me know what was going on. He told me the click I heard in the shifter is within acceptable tolerance (U-joint is fine). Of course when he drove it the 2-3 flare was not obvious.... He told me he couldn't find anything wrong, but would flush the solenoid, drop the pan to do a filter and fluid change, and do a relearn. I picked it up on Thursday April 19th. I drove the car on the 19th and it felt fine. However Friday things went really bad. The flare between 2-3 really reared its head. I was at medium acceleration and it really hung up between 2-3 and reved up much more than ever, then it slammed into gear and bucked a few times. It continued to do this for about 5-10 minutes, shifting weird in other gears as well.... I called my buddy up and explained what happened. He said he did feel the flare (mildly) but it went away during the relearn process.... So he told me to bring it back in on Monday. He had a feeling that there might be a broken weld on a clutch... I am sure there is more to it than that, but I know NOTHING about the internal workings of an automatic trans..
So I drop the car off at Taylor Chevy on Monday April 22nd. Again I was given a loaner 2013 Malibu and was in and out of the dealer within minutes. Today he emailed me the pic attached. He pulled the trans and completly disassembled it, and found exactly what he was looking for. A faulty/broken weld on a clutch pack. Hopefully, this will be the end of my transmission woes.... It is a reassuring feeling that a friend is servicing it and no corners will be cut. Hopefully I will get it back soon as my new summer wheels and tires arrive tomorrow.........
