Actually Cali was less expensive than Nevada. Nevada registration was $429/Cali $175, Nevada Smog(annually) was 33.99/Cali is $60 every other year, and Insurance Nevada $1246/Cali is $724. And yes I know Vegas is on the high end of Nevada, cost of living wise.
Now, I love Vegas, but it seems a bit expensive where my vehicle was concerned. I have four cars, one truck, one suv, and two Harleys registered in Cali. The only other state that I have a residence where auto expenses are less than Cali is Texas. Lubbock has the cheapest cost of living in West Texas. I lived there for a year when my daughter attended TTU, and I must say it was a pleasure to pay $2.43 a gallon for gas back in 2009 and part of 2010. I hope to retire in Texas in a few years.
I know this answer seems a bit winded, but with my limited travels, these expenses are a reflection of my actual incurred expenses. Being an expatriot of Chicago for forty years, the weather in Cali is perfect for me. I'm a two hour drive from Vegas, where my wife and I can enjoy the great food and drink in the best party atmosphere on earth. We vist our daughter in Lubbock in an hour flight from Vegas where we get some great Tex-Mex, spend some quality time, then return to Cali via Vegas.

Interesting...I live in TX, so I am reaping the benefits of both registration and gas prices. I lived in SoCal for 2 years and stuff is definitely more expensive. I don't think I could justify buying a home out there...crazy! It is very nice though.
