I was wondering what Brand OF GAS got the best MPG and how can you find out if your gas station uses 10% ethanol etc?
Thanks for any help.

Not sure how to find out the ethanol content. We don't have a variety of fuels to choose from where I live, only Phillips 66 and Texaco, but I prefer Phillips 66 of the two. My wife seems to get about 20-25 more miles per tank when we fill up with premium @ Phillips 66.
It may just be all in my head though or be a coincidence.

Honestly you probably will not see that much of a difference brand to brand... they all use the same raw materials and production process. The only difference is additive package (which does not really affect gas mileage in the short term) and ethanol contact (which does). Revelation of ethanol content is mandated in TX.

The reason I ask is I usually use Sunoco, mainly its the cheapest, convenient and decent quality. I live in a congested NJ region where we get 10% ethanol added during the winter, and my mileage is affected noticeable. I always heard some gas has higher silicon or sulfur or something and gets better mileage. I thought it was Shell or Gulf. I would pay 5-6cents more for better quality gas that would increase my mileage.

Their IS winter gas too which will lower your MPG. Not just the gas with ethanol. I use all ethanol gas here in the corn state of IA. Shell 93. Stick with the top tier fuel providers and you'll be OK.

I always got great mileage back when I used to siphon my gas about 1:00AM. But that's a whole different story.

I'm a few miles from ya in the same congested NJ area. My car hates gas from Gulf (ran like crap and almost bogged out) and my stock tune does not like "Super" right now (ran worse). I think these cars come tuned for 87 from the factory...

Yea 87, that was one of it's major selling points to drag me out of my 99 Regal GS, all worked up I loved that car(gave it to my son). But with the worked PCM, it used 93 octane period, anything less or crappy and big problemo's. Since mine was used with 6000 miles, I added a Yella Terra intake tube, then I unhooked the battery for 3 hrs and then hooked it up and drove it like I stole it. Major difference. The other owner must of drove like a slow poke, cuz it woke up now. More responsive, stronger pull, better intake roar(slight) and looks like 2 mpg on highway mileage better between the two changes. Only top tiers around me are a couple Shells and a Texaco.

Gas is gas! It all goes in a pipeline then at a fuel depot trucks come and fill up. Additives are brand specific... I make gas and diesel and every drop goes up to the east coast. The condition of the tank is what's important.

Then the additives make a world of difference. If I run anything other than the BP/AMOCO 93 my plugs get f*cked up in one tankful.

I had a 05 Magnum gt, with interactive computer like ours in the G8 Gt, when you used premo gas 91 or 93 it would run better. It would be noticeable more responsive, did not feel any more hp though seat of the pants, but did get 1-2 mpg more also. But it really felt more fun to drive with it being so much more responsive with the 93. One advantage the Magnum had was you could run 87 all week then put in 93 and then clear the octane part of the computer, so it would instantly use the high octane fuel tables and spark tables. It was real easy to clear the computer too, we found out the trick on a C32 list, which the magnum had its trans and electronics from.

I can tell if the gas has ethanol in it if my gas mileage drops by about 10% for roughly the same type of driving. There are only three non-ethanol stations in my county, and the closest one recently sold me gas that gave me E10-like mileage in two different cars (even though the pump was not marked E10 and a large sign in front of station announced non-ethanol gas). I tried the next closest station and the mileage immediately returned to normal. Since this spring, I'm guessing that not all E10 gas has had the full 10% of ethanol, because the mileage hit was more like 5% for one tank.

Shell V Power, word!!!! unfortunately no Shell stations in N.Y. on my 6,000 mile trip that is all I used, I laugh all the time at the people who say that premium is too expensive, LMFAO!!! an extra $2 for a full tank is going to break the bank? lol

IMHO Top Tier gas is what every driver should use if you can find it in your area.

Exxon 93 octane here in Texas... that's what Charlie recommended for summer formula since we aren't graced with BP/Amoco.

MA has 10% ethanol mandated, I've never even run pure gas in my car would like to try it out though. I always use 93 and use brand name gas, Shell, Mobil, Gulf, usually Shell or Mobil, I don't notice a lot of difference as long as I use 93 octane. I always did this, even before I got the tune, I read somewhere that running 87 pulls th timing. I even notice a big difference from 87 to 93 in my 2 LT-1 Buicks.

There aren't BP stations in Austin anymore? There was one right by the house I lived in my last semester.

No BP, no Amoco, no Arco, no am/pm or anything similar that I'm aware of.

I really miss Amoco Ultimate... I had a "bitchin' Camaro" that used to love that stuff. Long ago and far away...

To answer the original question gas that contains 10% Ethanol will have a sticker on the pump or at least they are supposed to. I have tried several different brands, EXXON, Shell, Chevron and BP. Most are about the same. I don't know if Shell's claim of adding nitrogen really equates to anything. If you want nitrogen in your tank, pee in it. I have heard that Penquin Pee is used as an addative in the Northwest. The only problem is the streak down the side from the fuel cap, man those Penquins squirm.

Where can you find out if your local gas stations has Ethanol in the gas, assuming it is NOT listed on the pump itself. No where around me states it has the Ethanol. I want to find one that surely does not.

New Jersey doesn't have a state requirement for E-10 labels. No federal lable requirement at all.
You need to find the stations distributor. That's where ethanol is added to gas.

Yea I found a site that says that. Since I am on the NE in a congested zone we are mandatory 10% and no warning label required. Only three counties dont require it, Bergan, cape may and atlantic county, all low pop areas. Bummer
