Hope you like my weekend build. This was done using ABS plastic and a hot air plastic welder. Air scoops were modified to allow for more air to top of filter. Now I'm ready to do a dyno tune to get all hp available from this mod. I'll keep you all posted...:)

Pic with hood closed looking in through scoop. As you can tell filter is visible.

Very creative. You need a tune now.

Cool idea and looks good! However, I thought the hood scoops were in a low pressure area of the hood which is why no big manufacturer uses them to pull air for an intake.

They are. His CAI can suck air through them. :)

What about water? Is it a possible problem?

Who's filter and what size did you use? Also, what did you use to connect the MAF to the system and the MAF to the intake?

I'm pretty sure it will take on some water, but I never had a problem with my 99 ramair when i took the baffles off and ran it in the rain. I think having a good oiled K&N or charged K&N will transfer the water to the bottom of the box. Depending on how much rain I also believe the water will somewhat evaporate before it makes it all the way to the combustion chamber. I will keep yall posted next rain we have which I believe there's a 40% today.

Xfactor, I used the same filter from my T/A ramair because its nice and big and also fit the dimensions for the box plus it was available. As for the ends I cut one off the stock box and welded it to my new box. On the intake side I used a straight belowe again left over parts from my T/A.

Ok guy's after several weeks of runing my custom built CAI even in the rain. Everything seems to be runing like stock no problems in heavy rain even while racing.lol
Here are the new pic's with a drain and relocated IAT on the box.

Ran a hose from the drain to the bottom of the car so the belt wouldn't get wet...

I was thinking about making some and selling them, but first I want to see what the hp gains are. I might do a dyno pull this Friday but it's going to have to be with a tune. The box was not performing right without the tune the air velocity was to high and the fuel managment system could to keep up with it. So I kind of need to know what a stock G8 with a tune pushes to the rear wheel and compare my result to get an idea on the gain.

Nice job man! I like the home made CAI. Your 13.20 is nice for a tune & cai car.

Where did you make your 1/4 run at? What state?

I did those times at HRP (Houston Race way Park) in Texas. It was very humid because it started raining and they ran us off after I got three passes. I did the DA on it and the car could have ran a 12.8 @ 109mph.

A non-issue. Hood scoops opened up on both '08 & '09. What little water that does get in there doesn't get close to the ignition parts. Also turns to steam very quickly which makes for fun at stop lights in the rain.

Water getting to the ignition is not the problem. Water getting inside the engine is. Read "hydraulic lock".

That's not the potential problem, either. You're not going to get hydrolocked with rain. What it can do is get the filter so wet that it starts to restrict too much and can't let enough air in to run the engine. Depending on the filter and how wet it gets, it might need to be replaced, or it might need to dry out.

Not going to be a problem unless maybe you're driving for extended times in heavy rain.

Though if you're tailgating someone who runs through a huge puddle and soaks your car, hydrolock is not impossible.

However, the hood scoops need to be bigger for this to work well, and the intake would need to be sealed at least at the back and sides for it to work. It's not a CAI as-is at all. The scoops will provide some of the air, no doubt, but lots of it will come from the engine bay itself.

The box is sealed with the hood when it is closed. I put some window weather strips made of foam that seal the box to the rest of the engine bay. These strips are glued to the top of the hood and mate up with the boarder around the filter. I will take a pic with my phone and post it up. I also cut the bottom of the hood to allow more air. All the issues you have mentioned are taken care of. I have had no issuse with this box. I ran the same setup with my Ramair for years with no issues.

That being said and with the pic's below it is a CAI...
The only reason I had not posted these pic's are because I wanted to dress up the opening better. Just haven't found the time to do it.

Notice the rest of the scoops covered so that NO hot air is being taken in from the engine bay...
