I got on the free way behind an 08 S500 benz. We line up and the 70 year old man smiled and we both mash them. He had 2 cars on me before my car even down shifted! There was no catching him he pulled and pulled like I was standing still... My first race too and I had the wife in the car that was laughing at me!!!

At least it was my dad... Wow I had no idea he would beat me like that.. But for what he paid for his car I could have bought 4 GXPs mabey 5? lol

It was fun though!

Get your tune done and that will help.

And you have a GXP, damn.....

Yep, get a ECM/TCM tune......

First problem, you let the car pick a gear with the crappy stock tranny tune. You should have had it in manual instead.

you need to get your car in the right gear before you launch...
Also there is no such thing as as a 2008 s500...
and you make more HP and TQ than an s550 (which does exist) and you weigh way less...
You should be able to outrun the Old Man.

Unless of course you misspoke and he has an S600... (which makes more sense as an s500 costs only twice what a GXP does, wheras the 600 costs about 5 times as much) then even modded you will probably get owned.

You should have won.

Here is a good tip. Like fiveoh mentioned, you should be in manual at a roll.

What speed did you guys go from? Let's say 40 although you were probably going faster. In my GT, at 40 mph I can put it into M2. You can hear the engine screaming to unleash it's powerband. The three honks happen or whatever you use to start the race and you just mash the pedal. It makes my head snap back in my GT so I'm sure it will be more harsh and sweet in your GXP. Now, right after you have smashed the gas, you should switch it back into Drive and if you want switch it back into Sport after that. DO NOT TRY AND UPSHIFT YOURSELF, the car will upshift faster than you. Downshifting on the stock tune is where the car fails. I figured this out myself after 6 months of owning the car and when I tried it, it reasured me that these cars are powerful. At highway speeds, you would probably want to try M3. The manual feature on our new autos make the argument about Maunal vs. Auto in a roll race kinda moot. We can pick our gears just like them...just let the car upshift. I lost some roll races before knowing this because the car took way too long to downshift and the other car had too much of a lead for me to make up.

Hope this helps.

You sure it wasn't an S600? That would be different...

No it said S500 I will look again. I know it was a really expensive car I think it might be an 07 though? we took off at 70 and I thought my car would down shift its self better than me. But even if he got the jump I thought I could real him in and he pulled and pulled and pulled. I never had a chance!

Manually shift it to the lower gears before the races starts.

An 07 S500 had just north of 300 hp.

there is no 2007 s500 either... discontinued in 2006; they were a high 80K car back then... again only a little over double what a GXP goes for.
S500 are substantially slower than a GT from a dig or a roll.... heck they barely make 300 HP and less than 340 TQ and they weigh 150-200 lbs more.

You are doing something very wrong if one of those beat you.

something isnt right then. Mabey its an AMG?

p71
08-13-2009, 10:06 AM
if it was a AMG it would have a three digit model designation. S63 or S65, non AMG cars have a four digit designation s550 s600 s500...

Your g8 probably downshifted to 4th instead of 3rd, leaving you at 2200rpm and not in your powerband. Not to mention the lag. I made the mistake of not putting it in manual before. Mustang pulled 3+ cars on me. 2nd race I did manual... I edge him out by a little. It makes a huge difference.

Somebody should check MSN Autos (http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Spec_Glance.aspx?year=2007&make=Mercedes-Benz&model=S-Class&trimid=-1) before posting disparaging marks about what I said.
;)

No S500 just an S550... like I said...

Yeah, really he should not be able to walk you that badly. They are low 13 to high 12 second cars with a good driver. Like they said, downshift then go...will be a better race. With a tune you should be very close. :)

That was actually meant to be a crack at MSN Autos... apparently based on me clicking the wrong link and not knowing it. My bad.

Chill out. :poof:

I am quite possibly the most laid back person I know... side effect of getting shot and motared repeatedly is you either get very skitish or very nonchalant about minor irritants.

I do love debating though and I am very detail orientated... (other than spelling)

Yeah, thought so. Good look with that, those are $150k W12 twin turbo monsters. I think you'd need more than a tune :)

You'd have a better chance in that.

Or you could slap a TVS2300 on the GXP and give him a run for his money. :)

The 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds 2008 Mercedes S600 is priced at $144,975.

Or, don't race him from a roll and you might stay ahead for a few seconds..

It makes 510 hp at 5,000 rpm and 612 lb-ft of torque between 1,800 - 3,500 rpm.
