View Full Version : Shattered at the pump...

The gas cap shattered into two or three pieces at the gas pump. It was embarrassing, but I pieced them all back together. Then after detailing my car for around four (4) hours Sunday, the chime blared, and the engine logo in the D.I.C. flashed, and the engine light lit in the upper right-hand of the instrument panel. So naturally, I went to the dealership this morning.

They said to check back Tuesday...it was the gas cap causing all of the system failure but the replacement had to be shipped in from Utah.

Tomorrow has GOT to be better.

How did it shatter? Is it no longer attached to the leash and it dropped?

Amazing. I've had zero problems with my gas cap. 20k miles later, still works.

I HATE the gas cap on this car. You would think all that training I received pumping gas in High School would teach me how to tighten a gas cap. :no1: Guess not. You got to do it JUST right or else. :poof:

I've only had one issue with my gas cap....the check engine light came on and, remembering a similar issue on a previous car, I re-tightened the gas cap for a better seal. Problem solved.

I see a gas cap recall on this car in our future. It's an emissions thing.

Waiting on the dealer to get mine in. I'm just over 6,000 miles and had codes about 10 times.

I had a problem at first with the CEL coming on due to the gas cap. The dealer swapped my gas cap with another G8 on the lot and told me that you had to hear 3 clicks before it was properly sealed. I had never had a car with an emissions check before this one, so I never bothered with clicking into place with the old car.

It takes two hands for these gas caps IMO.

To avoid cross threading and not having it secure,I used my left hand to keep the cap lined up while turning with my right hand.

When putting the cap on, I always give it a quarter counter-clockwise turn to make sure it's started properly, then tighten it down until I hear multiple clicks. Never had any issues with the gas cap on my '08 bought in May 2008. I have just over 20k on the car now.

Ain't it the truth. Same here.

I just pulled the cap from the holder - the tiny cable remained connected to the base - parts from the cap, e.g., the smaller white diameter end, the slightly larger diameter middle, etc.
Despite words of encouragement from others, I continue to handle the replacement cap very delicately.

Mine keeps coming loose not matter how many clicks I give it after filling up. Four times so far. CEL comes on with code P0455. I then go to the cap to check it and it's as loose as some of those trash celebrities. I'm going to stop at the dealer tomorrow to see if they can order a new cap.
