Hi,
I had a question about cams and was hoping you guys could shed some light on it for me.
I have never had a CAM in any of my cars before. Currently, the car is a daily driver, about 15 miles total to work and back. Mostly highway. Mods so far are a VMS tune (DOD disabled), Borla cat back, and roto-fab intake with headers in the near future. I have heard some cams on here that sound like dump trucks at idle. They got raspy and i think sound like crap.
I was wondering if they made a cam that produced more HP without killing the sound and driveability. The car goes to the track max of 5 times a year. Def looking for more power without losing durability, longevity, and everyday driveability. I don't want it idling rough, sounding like its coughing and spitting up and about to stall out. I also dont want it trying to lurch forward every time I stop and have it idle at 800 rpm lol. Is there a CAM out there for the G8 that can do that?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
Darren

Never had a cam? How did the engine run?
lol
You can specify what you want.
I believe Livernois has a cam or two that idle close to stock, yet still make lots of power.
livernois can hook you up... they have a couple of real mild cams...
hell the ls2 cam should give you 420 ish crank hp with no other mods

yea i mean, the car is a daily driver so i dont want it sputtering and sounding like the garbage truck that passes my house 2 times a week. something very mild but will still bump up the HP.

Edmanet has the Livernois stage 1 and it has a mild idle. Very stealthy even with the LTs w/stock mufflers. I'm either getting that cam or Vectors equivalent once I save the money for it. I would call/pm/email Andy from livernois or Kirk from Vector and talk to them about their cams.
Also keep in mild your choice in mufflers will make a cammed car either sound stock or like a dump truck :)

Look at the stage 1C cam from Livernois. That is what I am going with along with a Maggie.

I have a borla exhaust and right now, the car has a great rumble. headers are next which will make it rumble a bit more. will a cam, even a "stealth" cam upset that sound and really change it?

Rich claims their 1C is very quiet but headers will add more rumble

Since we're on the topic of cams, I have a question too. My cam install is happening in September so I have some additional time to do research. So far I like the specs of Livernois' Stage 1 cam: 224/230 LSA114. I was told not to go past 228/228 LSA115.
Of course while I sorta know what these numbers mean it's hard to appreciate them regarding performance gain. On one hand I don't want to destroy my gas mileage and pick a cam that is going to degrade performance but on the other hand I don't want to pick a cam that is too mild.
Ideally I would like to attain 450rwhp but would settle for 425rwhp. I realize that you lose 12% of your power through the drive train. You can see the other mods that will happen along with the cam swap that should help.
Any insights on cam specs will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

Give Matt @ Tune Time Performance in Toms River a call. He has some great choices of cams for the g8. He car runs like stock, none of the characteristics that you mentioned. He's more than happy to answer any questions that you may have. They have also done the cam work on my G8. Just saw him on Saturday and he was leaving for vacation. Give him a call next week.
