Lower Ball Joints?

Hey Greg,

Can you source a better lower ball joint for the G8 front suspension?

Moog would be my preferred route but if OEM is the only one then I need to get them. 1 for each side. I might as well replace them both! :spank:

See picture for exact one.

I have 10,000 miles on this P.O.S. and the lower ball joint on the passenger side is bad and I have a nice knocking noise when ever I hit a bump.
I jacked the car up and cranked on the wheel and you can see the slop in it by moving the wheel back and forth. The drivers side is OK but my thinking is I'll just remove both and put some pedders bushings in on top while I'm at it.

Are the ball joints available separate from the Radius Rods and Lower Control Arms? My understanding is that they are part of these arms, 2 on each side. I think each arm is in the $300 range.

Wouldn't be surprised. I guess if that's true then I'll get the passenger side and call it good.

The part in your picture Chris GM calls the lower control arm and it includes the ball joint. I don't know of any aftermarket companys producing this part yet. If you find a Moog number I can check the price for you.

I sent an email to Paul to see if they have something down there that's stronger in the land of the Koala...

Anyone that doubts Gregs prices...

I asked my fiance to see what they would charge me (she works part time at a Pontiac dealer) and they quoted me 217 and change but if I had them install it, it'd be 10% over cost for the part and an hour labor. Me thinks I can replace this myself...

Pedders calls #7 the Radius Rod and the other one is the Lower Control Arm. I've heard of all 4 being bad. The Pedders guys in Oz said they are not aware of a ball joint problem on their VEs.

BTW, Greg. I got my GXP diffuser installed. Piece of cake. Under 30 min. Thanks.

I had a front end rattle and the dealer replaced the front lower control arms on each side of the car.

Here's a quote from Paul from an email he sent me. He went WAY above and beyond to help me out and for that I thank you Paul.

My guess here is that GM must have gotten a run of bad ball joints from the MFG.

I'm just hoping the one I bought from Greg at Pace is better than the one I have now! lol

I'd think they are the same part as Commodore.

I called up WA Suspensions, the largest well respected suspension place in my state.

They've never heard of a ball joint issue with VE.

They called up PAJA Roadsafe who are their balljoint supplier.

They had an aftermarket VE balljoint listed as being in development back in 2007.
It still has not been produced and marketed. ( You'd have to guess that there's been no call for it).


I searched on ls1.com.au and "VE ball joint" has no mention.
"VE ball" again no mention.
"VE control arm" no mention
I searched "control arm" and only found one thread about VE SS problems.
It brought up 1 mention of a guy finding the hex nuts on his ball joints loose at 5000km. He tightened them 3 turns and was good to go.
