View Full Version : Violent shift into Reverse and Drive

We just picked up a 2008 G8 GT with under 8,000 miles on it Sunday. This morning I start the car, it idled for 15-20 seconds, and I put it into Drive. It seemed to take a long time for it to actually engage, and when it did, it was VERY violent. I then tried shifting it into reverse (from drive), and it was a very violent shift into reverse as well. I shifted back to Drive, and another violent shift, and I drove to work without anything else strange happening. When I got to work after about a 50 minute drive, it shifted into reverse without any issues. Has anyone else experienced the automatic transmission acting this way? That was the only time this has happened, but we've only had the car for a few days.

Have the Trans fluid checked.

Good idea. I'll have to check the fluid when I get home. Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I should have checked that before.

There is no dip stick tube. Unless you have a ramps and are able to remove the plug on the trans, you won't be able to check it.
It's under warranty, have the dealer do it.

That stinks. I didn't recall seeing a dipstick for the trans and now I guess I found out why. I guess if this persists, I'll have to take it in to be checked out.

Mine occasionally still dues it for no apparent reasons on some days; just like the 2nd to 3rd flare. No amount of programming or reprogramming, by dealer or aftermarket has made much difference. Of course, now that it has been tuned the dealer will not touch the valvebody seals. Apparently the tune is the culprit behind an issue that is happening everywhere and was documented on mine waay before it was ever touched

unless you flash back to stock... unless they know it was tuned and are looking for it... without the transmission completely failing GM will not request the calibration from what I understand.

I've had that issue as well in the past. I was low on fluid and it only happend on cold starts. Which led me to believe the trans fluid just neded to be warmed up.

Awesome info wickedmom. Hopefully it doesn't happen any more, but if it does, at least I'll have some knowledge as to what it may be, and hopefully the dealer can take care of it.

depends on the dealer. Mine went in for a trans pan gasket and they tried denying it because of the engine tune. Every dealership I know of around here looks for it. Which is a shame, considering there are more stock tune cars experiencing this problem than tuned cars. It is an issue that should be addressed regardless of "tune" since it is affecting people waay before the tune happens. NOt to mention the fact it is affecting all makes and models utilizing this trans. Hell, the crappy GM programming is one of the reasons "tuning" it out became so popular.

Does this require the transmission to be pulled out of the vehicle? Mine does this when its cold outside too.
