What island are you going to for starters? If you go to Oahu I highly recommend a hike up Diamond head. Also Senator Fongs Gardens. Make sure you take a drive out to the North Shore, (we rented a Harley and rode around the entire island, and had a soft top Wrangler for a rental). If you do go up to the North Shore, and you like shrimp, make sure you go to Giovanis. It's a little trailer that does some awesome shrimp for a great price, and if you like ribs go to Uncle Po's, also out on the North Shore....Awesome Hawaiian style ribs. We did Paradise Cove for a luau, but the better more traditional one is at the Polynesian Cultral Center, but you can't drink.

+1 on diamonhead, remember to bring water. can go visit pearl harbor, there's some japanese gardens that are pretty neat, forgot the name. Also, the Dole pineapple plantation is out there somewhere. take a drive around the island, there are scenic spots all the way around it. and of course, do a crap load of diving, fishing and snorkeling!

Go to Kauai! It's not as touristy (busy) as the other more popular islands, but is probably the most beautiful, peaceful places to be. I always enjoyed the north shore the best, Princeville area...which I believe is changing into a St. Regis. You can either do nothing at all, or go boating, hiking, golfing, helicopters, etc. You will really enjoy it there!

Me and the wife went to Maui and had a blast. Some favorites where the road to hannah(sp?), surfing lessons/surfing, snorkeling, Old Lahaina Luau, and the food. I ate seared ahi tuna everyday. I'm sure you cant go wrong with whichever island you choose. I HATE flying and would endure the 8 hour flight to go again.

If you're military I would recommend staying @ the Hale Koa Hotel. It's right on the beach and has great deals. If not the Outrigger Reef on the Beach is also nice and right next door. Both are close to shopping, rental car places and places to catch island and city tours as well as dinner cruises. They both also have great views of Diamond head.

+1 on Maui - It is super tropical......
People have given some really good recomendations.
Definitely do some snorkeling, and bring some bread underwater (plastic zip loc bag) with you & you'll attract a ton of cool fish.
You'll probably fly into Oahu, and Waikiki Beach & Diamond Head are cool

+1 for the honeymoon! For a "family trip" I would do Maui.

I honeymooned in Hawaii! I can tell you what I did, Stay in Oahu for two nights then went on a Seven day cruise that hit up all the other islands which was WAYYYY cheaper than flying to each island and finding a hotel. Then another two nights in Oahu then flew with Hawaiian airline to Lanai with was great total seclusion. rented a Jeep went off road!! then last night in Oahu. Total 12 days!! But if I were to go back it would only be Maui, the northern most Island Kauai and those two smaller islands Lanai and Molokai!!

The Grand Wailea (why a lay a)

Been there twice... Great area and amazing place but VERY pricey. You won't be disappointed. Their spa is VERY nice and I would recommend you set your wife (to be) up with a few hours there. They have a great gym with trainers as well.
I would also fly over to Oahu and spend some time in Honolulu and Pearl Harbor if you haven't. It's SO worth it IMO.
Since I've been there twice and will most likely be going back in 2010 my fiance and I are going on a Southern Caribbean cruise for our honeymoon. We fly into San Juan and stay for 3 days then board the boat for 7 days and then back to San Juan for 1 day and fly home. I think it's running about $6,500 total.

Just got Married in Maui in April.
Stayed at Marriott at Wailea. Had an ocean view and it was great. They have an adult pool and a kid pool.
The road trip to Hana is great, especially if you like winding roads and one lane bridges. I had a blast ripping through the road to Hana. Hit all the tourist spots on the way to Hana. Great pictures. If you take this road trip it can last all day depending on type of year and how many cars since its 25mph the whole way or it can take 3 hours like ours did since I loved going fast through all the corners.
Take an evening dinner cruise at Maaleea Bay, its worth the cost.
Wish we could of stayed longer on Maui we went to Kauai after that for 6 days to enjoy our honeymoon.
Hope that helps

Thanks for all the replies! We're planning on staying on Oahu but after the suggestions on here, might look into others. Wanting to have the nicest trip we can get without breaking the bank at the same time.

How will you endure being away from your G8 for so long?
We took our honeymoon there and LOVED it! Do the drive to Hana in Maui. The G8 would be awesome to take on this road. If you do the road to Hana, get a tour book and stop the car along the way where to tour book tells you to stop. You'll see some absolutely beautiful waterfalls and other sights that you would never know was there otherwise.
There are tons of beaches in Hawaii that you will have all to yourself. Everyone seems to go to the main beaches, but do a little research and you'll be able to find a secluded beach not too far away.
Snorkeling or scuba diving is great there! You can literally pull the car over along the beach somewhere, and just get out and go snorkeling. You don't need to go to the designated snorkeling spots to see some great fish and marine life.
We didn't do it, but heard from other people that helicopter rides are awesome! Take a helicopter over the Napali coast in Kauai. We saw if from our cruise ship, and it is breathtaking!

Oahu is more urban IMO. If that's what you want then do it. I would do more Maui but with a couple days in Oahu if you can wing it. Pearl Harbor is NOT to be missed IMO.
Some pics to get your juices flowing... The place is awesome!:)

Oh and nothing is inexpensive over there. Expect your bank to get broken. :)

Yeah I've pretty much decided that I'm going to be broke! She better realize how important she is since this honeymoon would easily end up buying me a forced induction setup! IT will be difficult to leave the G8 behind at home, but the future wife is more important! (Don't tell my car I said that!)
