ETS, 8 years total service, 4 years out of Friedberg, Germany, 3 years as Nat'l Guard out of Branford, CT (1 year IRR in between AD service and NG service)

Active Duty service was with 1-37AR of the 1st Armored. I was an 11C in HHC on 120MM Mortars. Most fun I've ever had in the military, even while I was overseas (because we were set up as counter-battery and were able to shoot back at the bastards.)

Nat'l Guard I was with the 1-102IN (Yin-Yang patches, you've seen the unit before, they were on the beaches in Normandy, and also have had other combat missions). Had to enlist 11B unfortuantely, but at least my company was heavy weapons.

Good experience to have overall, and I suggest anyone that is thinking about serving, served ACTIVE DUTY first. Sets you straight and teaches you the most you ever thought you could be taught. Also ensures that you will be the best Soldier/Airman/Sailor/Marine you can be.

Almost 8 years active USAF 2a6x5 (Aircraft Hydraulics). Served out the majority of my career in the 2nd Bomb Wing/20th Bomb Sq. My heart decided it didn't like to work correctly anymore so I'm going on the TDRL at the end of July. It's gonna be weird to be retired at 27.

grrrr...... :boxing:

Only by 5000 lbs, at least as long as the START treaty is in effect, and if you take into account the MC rates it's almost a 2:1 ratio of buffs to bones that can be in the air so that kinda blows that argument out of the water, no pun intended :p

Thanks, everything is fine now, I'm going to school full time on the post 9/11 GI Bill and I get to enjoy my wife and kids' company everyday. On the plus side I now have titanium and carbon fiber body parts, the weight reduction comes in handy at the track, ha ha.

It's a load of crap if you ask me.

"Our troops are already doing an admirable job following the Rules of Engagement (ROE). But when the Taliban purposely uses civilians as human shields, civilian casualties are a tragic, but not uncommon result. The proposed medal will only cause the Taliban to increase their reliance on this cowardly tactic. It will encourage U.S. soldiers to do nothing in the face of danger. And it will lead to the institutionalization of inaction." from here -->http://www.rightsidenews.com/2010051510206/global-terrorism/new-medal-for-courageous-restraint-will-cost-american-lives.html

For those that care, I was just promoted to E6 this past week. Made it in under 8 years and that is way above average for my rating/mos. Now comes the big decision. My contract is up in 2013 And I will have 9.5 years in. What to do, what to do?

Where were you stationed in Germany? I was out of Friedberg.

Also who here had multiple MOS's? I know it's kind of cheating, but my PMOS was 11C, Secondary was 11B. Served as an 11C during my active duty time, 11B as a CT National Guardsman; I was in Iraq 2003-2004 as well. We were the only Mortar team cleared to counter-battery within Baghdad. Have a confirmed kill on a counter-battery mission as well, got the jerk that was mortaring us; he didn't pack up and move quickly enough. That and a 120mm mortar has a VERY large burst radius. :)

E5/SSgt Air National Guard. 180th Fighter Wing here. 6 years in so far with about 4.5 years active duty time as 1C3X1.

Spent first 3 years at the 179th Airlift Wing, volunteered to go to Iraq to Kirkuk for a tour and came back and left the 179th for an AGR (Active Guard) job at the 180th Fighter Wing with the ASA ( Air Sovereignty Alert) mission now known as ACA (Aerospace Control Alert) in Oct 2008. It's a cool job but I want more and want to be out in the field so I'm training to get ready to tryout for Combat Control (1C2X1) and possibly crossing over to Active Duty AF.

I know this will start a bit of a conversation, but I've been thinking about the military. I've got the flying bug from my dad, since I was about 15 and I would love to actually fly in the military and if not, work on the damn things. What is the best branch to go into for something like that? I know they all have aircraft but what would be the one that will give me the best chances of success?

Eh? Heh heh I have no clue what your talking about... I am a group baby, so my knowledge of army terms is very limited... mass casualty drill? SOCOM or SOCSOUTH? Cause SOCOM isn't in Miami... As far as ATT, I do train at American Top Team with Thiago Silva in Doral.... However I doubt that is what you are referring to....

Navy for flying fighter airplanes, Army for helicopters, Airforce has alot of transport and troop carrier planes. However Air Force is also the cushiest/smartest choice.

Socsouth I phone auto corrected me sorry and army trauma training team they are based in Miami at Ryder trauma. They train the forward surgical teams or as they are called in army fst team the do mass casualty drills monthly right behind the zoo. I as a civilian now assist in the drills. And we always get volunteers from SOCSOUTH. It is similar to drills in fort hood for 68w. And I do know ATT but only the main one in coconut creek with Ricardo Liborio

Air force is the one you want to join if you want to "fly" a plane half way around the world on a video screen. If you want helicopters, I would look at the Coast Guard, I am in flight school learning how to fly helicopters for the Coast Guard and our mission is really cool. If you want to do law enforcement you can do drug interdiction and anti-illegal immigrant trafficking and even deploy with the Navy ships to do foreign vessel and aircraft intercept overseas. We also have the awesome mission of search and rescue which can be pretty crazy sometimes.

The other branches are great it just depends on what you want to do and what you want to fly.

Right on! I currently don't do anything with SOCSOUTH, since my job is a 12 on 12 off current OPS job. However when I finish my time in my current section, I am going to try to get a position as a SOCSOUTH liason or augmentee. SOF is the only thing I really know army wise... i have spent 9 years with 1st SFG(A) and 5th SFG(A) combined. I did not know about the drills behind the zoo, I have only been in Miami for about 5 or so months. I do enjoy the medical side and thought about re-enlisting to be a SOF medic and had some instructors at the RASCON (or whatever it is called) medical training place at Ft. Campbell try to get me to switch over. Yah the ATT Doral sight is fairly new, but Thiago, his wife Thaysa and Christopher Silva run this one, and Thiago personally teaches the muay thai classes. It is an awesome gym!!! I am unfortunately sidelined for the next month or so after dislocating my patella and tearing a tendon during MMA training takedown drills... :/ heh heh what can you do...

Fort Campbell, KY
Fort Bragg, NC

Im trying to choose which to be stationed next. Currently in Fort Riley, KS.

I spent almost 5 years at Ft Campbell. Its a good post, the only downside is the amount of people stationed there. I'm sure Bragg and Hood are just as bad. Its really awesome being 45 minutes from Nashville though! A lot of music and bars and other stuff there. The 101st does deploy a lot though, or at least did. I still own a house there, and would definitely go back. There's a rich history in the 101st too.

Ok, spoke with branch and they almost had me selected for Recruiting Duty but they later realized that i had less than 4 years TIS.
So, KY and NC are not available to me but I was guaranteed Ranger school in route to my next duty station.
Duty stations that are "priority" right now are
-Fort Weinwright Alaska
-Fort Drum, New York
-Fort Hood, Texas
-Germany

I was thinking Drum due to it bring light infantry and more chances to advance my career.

Thoughts?

Depends. Advancement went a lot out the window once deployments started up. I was stationed in Germany and it was pretty good. Only thing is that the units are a little... strange. Europe doesn't get nearly the money that CONUS units do. For instance, when I deployed to Iraq in 2003 here's what we had to deal with:

1 - No one, and I mean NO ONE, had up-armored HMWWVs.
2 - Blue Force Tracker - We were fitted with them, in limited numbers, BUT NEVER TURNED THE DAMNED THINGS ON
3 - We didn't have electronic countermeasures. At all. Lost a few people due to this (including a good friend)
4 - To "cure" the no up-armored issue, we took to bolting 1/8th inch steel plates to the under carriage and doors of the trucks. Imagine how slow this made an already slow standard humvee?
5 - We also took to putting sand bags in all the available ammo racks in our 1064A3 mortar carriers. Yeah...

Not to mention all the other crap that was going on. Tank Battalion, but they don't send their Scouts and Infantry they have on hand to do door to door clearance. We were relegated to route clearance, gate guarding and other bullshit assignments. However much of that may have been due to our Platoon Sergeant. Only thing we were able to clutch on to was the fact that we were the only mortar platoon in Baghdad that was cleared for counter battery. Boy did they figure out real quick that getting a 120mm mortar chucked back at you isn't a good trade. We did have opportunities to perform more traditional infantry duties when we moved out of Baghdad into Karbala.

Drum is a good assignment though. Hope you like cold days/nights and low oxygen density. :)
