Disclaimer: I am stock and a Mercedes S500 AMG (that's what it said on the back anyway) I would expect to be faster. On with the story...

Yesterday. Pull up to a light and there is a very nice silver Merc in the right lane. I get closer and read the badges which state "S500" on left of the trunk lid and "AMG" on the right. Very pretty car. I'm in no mood to race, I'm just cruising around enjoying my music and letting the sun in through the 'roof.

Light turns green, I roll out slow (about third of the way down on the pedal) and keep it there - I like to let the torque do the work, seem to get better mileage that way. Anyway I expect to get pulled on the right. Speedo says 50, nothing. Says 65, nothing. I just let it roll. Says 80, nothing. Finally at around 85 the Merc comes out of my blind spot with a bit of a whoosh and pulls in front of me.

The guy in front of me keeps looking in his rear view trying to get a reaction out of me. I yawn and make my left turn. Could tell he was itching but I already expected him to be faster and wasn't in the mood. Don't normally play sour grapes like that but I just got my car back from collision and I'm trying to enjoy it for a change.

I don't know the specs on an S500 AMG. Anyone here have a clue? I would expect to get beat - G8 GT in stock trim driving through 100+ degree heat :puke:

Fairly sure there is no such thing as an AMG S500. AMG cars use two digit numbers regular mercedes use three digit. The AMG S series are the S55, S63 and S65.

Stock you will woop up on an S500, and may be able to stay in sight of the S55 and will be watching tail lights on the other two (based of HP and tq numbers)... the S65 is over 600 hp and 700 TQ...

I destroyed an S500 the other day, but I am not stock.

I believe there is an AMG sport kit for that car. Don't think it made it faster though. They had around 300 hp.

We will destroy them stock.

It was a nice car regardless. The guy must live in my area, I'm sure I'll see it again.

You would have probably had a damn decent match up.

As a bonus, if the guy bought it new, he paid damn near $90 grand for it.

With any of those AMG cars after I got all my stuff done to my Pontiac I am not impressed anymore with any of the E55, S65 C32, C55, C63 etc (well except for the Black Series, because it be nice to have the money for them). What I trying to say is you spend all that money when the car is new and now look at ebay. I saw a two year old E55 amg for $35,000 with 35k on the odometer a dollar a mile!! Yeah my beloved G8 has also plunged in price for new and used but whatever. Now on the flip side getting a E55 amg like my neighbors' and having renntech treatment and tuned up the whoa-ahh like my G8. He has 20 inch racing wheels and his disc brake pads are the size of a trash can lid - huge!!! Maybe when I am 65 and getting headers on a car is over-kill I would consider a used one but I also must have a corvette in the garage as well. Kind of speed right out of the box.

That is the s550 (5.5=550 5.0=500 it is a ridiculously easy numbering scheme). S500 makes a touch over 300 hp (302 it I recall)

The new S500 and replacement S550 both use the same 5.5 liter engine. (Mercedes's contrived naming scheme does not always make sense - see also BMW, who does the same thing, with a 128 and a 135 both having the same 3.0 liter displacement - those crazy Germans!). OP did not say whether or not it was the new-new S500 (5.5 liter 382hp... I believe it was still an S500 for all of one model year) or older-but-still-kind-of-new S500 (5.0 liter 302 hp).

Either way, even a barely massaged G8 would have killed it.

S500 <2006... 5.0
S550 >2007... 5.5

no 5.5 liter s500... unless I am completely lost, which I rarely am. BMW numbering stopped reflecting engine size and started reflecting performance quotients shortly after AMD stopped listing processor speeds and started listing performance quotients. The only weird thing with MB numbering is that the tend to round up when they should round down. Kind of like Ford.

Okay... you are right. I got it backwards - the new body style (2006) had the 5.0 S500 carry over from the previous generation. ANYWAY, since that is true, a G8 GT will completely destroy an S500. I can't keep the stupid M-B engines straight since they adhere to their own naming standards on a from-time-to-time basis.

As for the Ford thing, don't you think 5.0 sounds better in conversation than 4.9? :P

The S550 is called the S500 outside of the US and Canada.

This is the correct statement.

To the OP...you would easily take an S500....an S550 would be closer but you should still edge them out as well. There is no such thing as an S500 or S550 AMG....only AMG sport kits which are AMG wheels, AMG shifter, AMG seats, and sometimes a few body panels or front bumpers.

Unless it says S55, S63, or S65....your in the clear with a G8. Modded is anyones game, but then again, you'd better be trapping well over 125mph if you expect to run with an S65.

I agree with most of that... except that I think an S600 will take us stock, and that is not an AMG car.

Thanks for the research, guys. All I know is what I saw, it said 'S500' on left side of trunk lid and 'AMG' on the right side, although that AMG badge did appear to be a little different from others I have seen. It appeared to be late model but not the brand new Merc body style. It was a pretty car I have to admit.

The guy did seem a little agitated that he had to work to get by me. I was just loafing as I said and even then 'loafing' at third throttle in these cars brings up 80mph quick. I blew by a bike cop that way one time and didn't think anything about it until I saw my speedo and said 'oh sh&&%&*^&'. I suppose next time I should just throw down and damn the consequences :angeldevil:

Word, no one remembers those though...lol. S600's are rare, as most people who buy those just go straight to the AMG models.

I dunno man... something about 12 cylinders...
