I am going to try and put everything into this but I am sure that I will miss a couple of things.

Parts needed:

GPS:

I do recommend that a Nuvi 2xxW series GPS unit be used with this kit. I used a 260w and they can be had for less then $140.

The dimensions of the 2xxW are:

WxHxD: 4.8"W x 2.9"H x .8"D (12.2 x 7.4 x 2.0 cm)

Display size, WxH: 3.81"W x 2.25"H (9.7 x 5.7 cm); 4.3" diag (10.9 cm)

Any GPS with these dimensions should work.

http://images.tigerdirect.ca/itemdetails/G145-0204/G145-0204-includeda.JPG

GPS mount:

Note this mount was made to work with the Nuvi 2xxW series of GPS. Other GPS units may work with these mounts but that will depend on the size of the GPS and the placement of power port of the GPS. I do recommend that a Nuvi 2xxW series GPS unit be used with this kit.

Omega top trim piece with air vents:

Omega air duct:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7752.jpg

Cubby:

Front full sized cubby with no 12V outlet. Includes Rado Silver Fascia Plate for the new flip up door.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7749.jpg

You can also get the smokers package with a little extra money.

Rado Silver A6 Gear Surround:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7754.jpg

Calais Stereo stack trim:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7756.jpg

Trim for Omega top trim piece with air vents:

Note this must be trimmed to fit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7755.jpg

I do not have this but for a little extra money you can also add a rear trim kit and rear smokers package.

Step 1:

Pull the silver trim off from both the drivers side and passangers side. You may have to give it a good pull for it to come off.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7757.jpg

Step 2:

Using a plastic pry bar remove the gear shift surround. There are a total of 6 clips if I remember right. After you have popped all of the clips remove the two plugs connected to the TC/heated seat button and the two plugs connected to the window/lock control panel. Please the shift surround with the two control panels aside for later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7758.jpg

Step 3:

Pull down the time the runs along the side of the radio stack and center console. On the passenger side there will be a plug under the radio (see pic). This plug is attached to the back side of the power supply that is in your cubby.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7760.jpg

Step 4:

Remove the two screws that hold the cubby in then give the cubby a pull. There are two clips behind the cubby holding it in place.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7759.jpg

Step 5:

Remove the radio face plate. This is done by grading the bottom corners of the face plate and pulling. See pic

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7761.jpg

Step 6:

Now with the radio face plate gone you can remove the circled screws. *note the silver screws are torx screws* With the torx screws removed the inter plate will come off (see pic 2).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7762.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7771.jpg

Step 7:

Below the radio there are two screws that need to be removed (see pic).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7763.jpg

Step 8:

On the drivers side pull down the time seen in the pic so that you can see the screw that needs to be removed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7764.jpg

Step 8:

Open the glove box and remove the trunk release button trim

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7765.jpg

Step 9:

Remove the 4 screws seen in pic 1 and then pull the glove box down so that you can see the screw shown in pic 2.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7766.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7767.jpg

Step 10:

Remove the 6 screws seen in this pic. Also after the screws are removed remover the trim under the E brake and the cup on the other side.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7768.jpg

Step 11:

Using a plastic pry bar again remove the center speaker grill. Start from the end closet to the windshield. But the grill aside so the you can reinstall it on the new center stack later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7769.jpg

Step 12:

Remove the two screws that are under the grill.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7770.jpg

Step 13:

Under the center console on both the driver and passenger side there is a screw and push pin that needs to be removed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7772.jpg

Step 14:

The center stack trim is now free of any screws and can now be removed. First unhook the Atari gauge plug and then pull the trim off. There are some clips that you will have to pull out.

Step 15:

Tuck the Atari gauge wires behind the radio.

Step 16:

Remove the duct that was behind the center stack trip.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7773.jpg

Step 17:

Install the new duct that comes with the kit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7774.jpg

Step 18:

Change over the control panels from the old gear shift trim to the new trim.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7776.jpg

Step 19:

Remove the power outlet from the cubby that was in your car. Next plug it back into the plug that it was orginal pluged into. Last take your power supply for you GPS and plug it into the power outlet and rout the cord up to were the GPS will be, tuck away and extra wire.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7775.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7760.jpg

Step 20:

Install the GPS into the center stack using the supplied mounts.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7745.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7751.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7750.jpg

***TIP***

I wanted to add a new tip to this write up. If you are like me and take things apart time after time do this before doing the install. Cutting this tab off will save you from having to drop the glove box each time you need to remove the top piece.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=5567&d=1268533252

Step 21:

Reverse the order that you removed items and install all of the new ones but hold off installing the silver time back to the driver and passenger side.

Step 22:

Change over the air vent trip from your old vent to the new vents if you want to match the door vents. See pics

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7777.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7785.jpg

Step 23:

The trim that you will get for the new center stack does is too big. Take the part that you have and install it. Next take tape and following the lines of the stack low the tape down. See pic.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7778.jpg

Step 24:

Using another piece of tape follow the line of the first piece of tape and leave a gap the with of a hacksaw blade. Do this for both sides.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7779.jpg

Step 25:

Using a fine tooth hack saw blade cut the time following the line between the tape. Do this for both sides.

Step 26:

Using a file file down the cut, then using a find grit sanding block finish the cut area. Do this for both sides.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7780.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/Misc/IMG_7781.jpg

Step 27:

The ends of the trim my stick up. To fix this use double sided tape or glue. On mine only the passenger side needed tape.

Step 28:

Install the center stack trim and the stock silver trim.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/bluejacket651/IMG_7790.jpg

I will add some better pics of everything installed soon.

Bluejacket --

Awesome write-up ... really the best pictorial of "dash destroying" I've seen yet.

The end result looks fantastic -- are you planning on painting the center trim piece just below the new vents, or leaving it as-is? Just curious...

It's also great to see the fruits of CP's efforts in there too a bit. :)

Great job!

As of right now I like the way the trim looks. But I may change my mind some day and paint it black. I wish I could get a rado silver radio face plate to match everything.

Just a heads up to those potential buyers out there... If you don't like the way that the trim piece around the air vent directional dials looks, Crazy Paul also offers it in the silver to match the side strips. I just got my kit in a couple of days ago so as soon as the GPS gets here I'll post up some pics.

Naah it's not on my site because there's just too many options available.

Send me an e-mail pjsadler@iinet.net.au and let me know.

a) Year and model of car
b) If GXP do you have Manual or Auto Trans
c) The thin strip below the vents, you prefer light shiny silver (Micro) or dark charcoal silver (Rado)
d) You want a full sized cubby with no 12V or the Front and Rear Smokers pack ? All doors will be dark charcoal silver (Rado).
e) If you have an 08 with black rear of console parts & want the Front and Rear Smokers pack.....then you might want Deal 35 so that the 3 pieces around the rear ashtray match the Rado silver door of the rear part of the smokers pack.

Here's just one of the Combination of Parts available.

Some guys use the Full Sized Compartment with no 12V socket inside, so they always have the original G8 socket in behind they can use. Bluejacket I think did that.

Your situation is a little different, because you are using the Front smokers pack with 12V inside.....hence your very relevant question.

Yes that is what I did. If you want to keep your front outlet you just need one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/Trackstick-PRO-12-VOLT-CIGARETTE-outlet-ADAPTER-new_W0QQitemZ110427335248QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGPS_De vices?hash=item19b5fb6a50&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 and hard wire it to the 12 volt source going to the plug.

There are only 2 wires running to the 12v outlet in the cubby. Yes it will shut off with the car just like stock.

I have the Garmin 765T installed and the audio is great. I first installed the kit with a speaker wired to my visor because I thought I wouldn't be able to hear the GPS stuffed in the dash. I never actually tried it without the external speaker until my first GPS died on me. When I replaced it with the 765T, I hooked it up without the external speaker and it works great. I also use mine as a hands free bluetooth for my phone. I did wire a microphone up by my visor though.

I really like this kit.

I must admit this is a very nice mod that I'm interested in doing but I'm a bit confused about the lower part of the install.
Can anyone tell me why you need to replace the gear shift surround piece? It not obvious why (at least to me) you would need to do that.
I'm also assuming you can keep the original lower cubby with the power connector that's standard in the car, or is that now different requiring a new cubby?
I'd wire the GPS directly to the fuse box or get an adapter\splitter.
Thx,
Jay

Jay,

Obviously the GPS housing cannot sit on top of the existing G8 centre console, which extends all the way from the gear surround to the windscreen in one piece.

The only 2/3 height centre console is from the Holden Calais range, it has a curve at the base where it meets the gear surround. This curve starts above the cubby area.

Some people say the original G8 cubby will fit into the Calais curved centre stack, others say it wont without forcing it. I supply all my kits with either the Calais curved full size storage compartment or the Calais smokers pack.....both have a curved flip down lid.

The Original G8 open cubby does not look right in the Calais curved centre stack IMO.

If you buy the Basic kit complete with the full sized compartment, you can then use your old cig lighter 12V outlet unmounted/tucked in behind the centre console as a power source for your GPS.

Way, way cool mod!

What's the USD price of the Calais radiused piece, and does it take any mods to fit it (minus GPS)?

Crazy Paul
02-08-2010, 07:46 PM
To fit the 2/3 height Calais radiused stack you need to remove your full height G8 centre stack. There goes your airvents and Atari gauges.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/PerthPurplePenguin/car%20parts/IMG_0622_04.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/PerthPurplePenguin/car%20parts/untitled6565.jpg

You'd still need the gear surround trim, Calais compartment or Smokers pack, then something 1/3 height to go on top of the Calais stack.

You could use a Calais top section which gives you nothing but airvents.
Cost about the same as the GPS trim.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/PerthPurplePenguin/car%20parts/VE_Calais_V_300.jpg

Or you could add a HSV triple gauge pod. Expensive.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/PerthPurplePenguin/car%20parts/NonMRCblank.jpg

Or add the GPS trim

HSV-GTS-300,

Appreciate the detailed response. It's clear to me now why you need to replace the gear surround (I didn't notice the curving of the new piece).

One more question; So if you want to still have a 12 volt power plug in the new configuration you need to get the new cubby with the smokers pack option? Sorry for my "denseness" on this, I just want to make sure I order the correct options.:uhm:
Thx

So if you want to still have a 12 volt power plug in the new configuration you need to get the new cubby with the smokers pack option? Sorry for my "denseness" on this, I just want to make sure I order the correct options.:uhm:
Thx
Jay

If you order the full sized Calais compartment with curved lid....then there is no 12V outlet inside that new compartment. You still have your original Pontiac 12V outlet but nowhere to mount it at the front anymore. It can happily live tucked in behind the console & power a GPS if you want.

If you buy the Calais Smokers Pack......then there is a new 12V outlet inside that new front compartment.
You also still have your original Pontiac 12V outlet but nowhere to mount it at the front anymore. It can happily live plugged in & tucked in behind the console to power a GPS if you want.
You can run the front 12V in the Calais smokers pack (CIG circuit) & the original 12V Pontiac outlet tucked in behind (AUX circuit) at the same time if you want.

Additionally with the Calais Smokers Pack there is a new 12V cig lighter outlet at the very rear of the centre console.....between the rear seat passengers feet. The Calais Smokers Pack contains 2 compartments, one for the front and one for the rear seat passengers.

Is there any reason why you couldn't just get the Omega Top Housing with Micro Silver Applique? Is it a different color than the original trim pieces or something?

The curved lower pieces look nice, but I would like to just do the top piece if it will match the color of the original console pieces.

In the G8 this is all one piece.

So you cannot just put this piece on top.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/PerthPurplePenguin/car%20parts/GPS%20mod/P1010747-8.jpg

You need to change to the 2/3 height Calais stereo stack trim, so you can put the 1/3 height piece on top.

I wanted to add a new tip to this write up. If you are like me and take things apart time after time do this before doing the install. Cutting this tab off will save you from having to drop the glove box each time you need to remove the top piece.

Use a sharp pointed blade to gently prise and lift at the other end.

Umm, but then you would have silence between directions, correct? I was wondering if the B/T link would work and if it were treated as a call. IE: radio playing...mute, "turn left in 20 yards"...radio resumes until next direction. Would seem the closest to factory integration.

I'm seriously considering this kit even though I have the Hacked Atari Gauges installed. I just had a few questions...

1) I can't really tell from the pictures, but how is the overall color scheme of the new trim match the rest of the interior? Are they similar to the factory colors?
2) Is there a way to get the GPS voice to play over the factory speakers? (not a deal breaker, but nice to know if its possible)
3) If I decide to get the Smokers Pack, I will have 4 12v plugs, correct? 1 tucked in the dash for the GPS, 1 in the front cubby, 1 in the center console and 1 in the rear cubby?
4) I'm a big iPod guy and I am looking for a way to leave my iPod in the car and not worrying about charging it and what not. When I had my Mustang w/ Pioneer in-dash GPS, I was able to keep the iPod in my glove box with a cable that ran into the rear of the head unit which could play music/charge at the same time. Could I have a similar setup with the G8? Could I run a cable into the rear aux and possible have a line running for the 12v to charge it? Would I need a VIM to accomplish this task? If so, will I be able to play through the Rear Aux and still control main head unit functions at the same time?
5) Finally, since I will be losing the Atari Gauges I was wondering if there anyone on here has the Double Hump gauges similar to JHP installed? If so, care to provide any pictures?

Thank and I appreciate all the help!

Yes it will and even better since you have a 2009 if you go with that rado silver.
2) Is there a way to get the GPS voice to play over the factory speakers? (not a deal breaker, but nice to know if its possible)
No with the 2X0 or the 2X5 Nuvi's but there maybe a higher end one that would.
3) If I decide to get the Smokers Pack, I will have 4 12v plugs, correct? 1 tucked in the dash for the GPS only if you add one yourself and it is very easy to do, 1 in the front cubby, 1 in the center console and 1 in the rear cubby? Rest is right

Yes, but you can not control the Iphone with the head unit even if you have VIM.

Is rado silver the darker shade? My G8 has the bright silver molding though. Also, if I do get a VIM, the screen won't go blank under 2MPH, right? I don't care about controlling the iPod, I just hate having the mess of wires in the front of the head unit. I may even keep it in the center console and run some a longer aux that way.

CP sent me this last week. http://www.hitv.com.au/products/view.jsp?id=43&category=7. I'd really love to do this but I don't like the fact that you lose all other audio once your in nav mode because of the rear aux that the nav requires.

Yes Rado silver is the darker one. It is the color your radio and other buttons are. The silver will match the other silver strips you have. And you are right about the VIM. Right now I have my rear input ran up to the center and it works great and you can charge from there.

I thought there was a 12V AUX socket in behind the front centre console which you could plug the old original 12V Pontiac outlet into and tuck the 12V outlet in behind the console, unmounted to power something.
Then plug the new Calais front smokers pack into the CIG socket in behind the front centre console. This 12V outlet inside your new Calais curved cubby more or less has the same function as the original.

Then you have the original 12V outlet in the console under the armrest + a new 12V outlet inside the very rear of the same console as part of the rear component in the Calais smokers pack.

Rado is the same silver as you call "charcoal" in the 2009+ G8's

Seems easy enough. I don't think this install will be too hard to do seeing as I did the Atari Gauges without problems.

What about map updates? Do you have to rip the whole dash apart again or does the top piece just come off?

All 4.3" Garmins will fit in the space. The problem that comes up with some of the Garmins is the placement of the plugs and if the bracket will cover it. I know for a fact that all 2XX work and I have been told the 7XX will also work.

Also, AFAIK people who have this set up are only using Garmins.

It will physically fit in between the airvents, but because it has the ports on the sides for cables then it wont work.

Well, I got my GPS installed today. Thanks to Paul for his usual good service.

I went with the 765T, and it seems to work fine with the exception of the Bluetooth, which so far refuses to pair with my Samsung phone. With this model, the power cord connects to a cradle rather than directly to the unit. The cradle is designed to attach to a ball socket for a windshield mount that comes with the unit. The cradle is fairly small, so it isn't likely to interfere whether you buy or make your own brackets.

As another point of reference for those considering this mod, it may not be for the faint of heart. When you're midway into it and have the dash spread all over, it certainly makes you wonder if this was such a good idea. I will say, though, that assembly is actually easier and quicker than getting everything apart. Since the new top portion of the housing is separate, it makes reassembly easier. As recommended, I cut off the tab that is covered by the glovebox, so thanks to the early adopters for that tip.

I got the smokers package and can verify there is a separate connector for it. I used the original outlet to power the Garmin and tucked it behind the new ash tray. The outlet in the new ash tray then plugged into another connector that comes out of the same harness as the original. The existing cig lighter in the G8 uses a two-wire connector. The new cig lighter in the smokers package is a three-wire to accommodate the light in the ash tray. Works great.

I haven't yet wired in the USB connector because on the 765T, it comes out of the bottom and interferes with the bracket. I may take it apart and see if I can make it work, but today I was running out of daylight and decided to button it up before it got dark. Speaking of the bracket, I made mine from a piece of 1/2 inch aluminum bar stock I picked up at Lowe's for $3. Easy to cut and drill to fit. I found a couple of No 8 screws about 1 1/2 inch laying around. Not sure it was necessary, but I added some foam tape to the bracket where it holds the Garmin.

It worried me that the bracket pieces were only attached at the bottom, so I cut two small wooden squares and epoxied them to the underside of the housing to give the top of each bracket something to brace against. Probably wasn't necessary, but figured it couldn't hurt.

As noted by others, this is a great mod for both looks and practicality. Looks factory installed, and you get to pick the GPS unit you want. Highly recommended.

I have the 765T and had the same problem with getting my iphone and 765T to stay connected and transferring my phonebook from the phone to the GPS. The problem was fixed by changing the "friendly name" of the nuvi to something else. The 765T has friendly name of something like "nuvi XXXXXXX" with the two little dots above the letter "u" in nuvi. The iphone does not like the special "u" character. I changed my friendly name to "GPS".

I can't remember exactly where in the options this is, but I can look into it tomorrow.

I didn't take a pic, but the additional connector for the smoker's package can be seen in BlueJacket's excellent writeup. The pic in step three has a lable that says "Unplug this". It is referring to the existing cig lighter connector that the foam is wrapped around. If you look just above this, you'll see a white connector that is clipped to another piece of bracketry. That's the three prong connector the smoker's package plugs into. You can't tell it in the pic, but there's nothing connected to this, it's just an unused connector.

Is there a slight gap at the front bottom edge where you could CAREFULLY slide like a small pocketknife blade in between the front radio fascia and the radio unit.
Then if so, gently rotate the blade to help ease the clips out.
Areas shown in green below have nothing underneath you are likely to poke.
Yellow shows the location of the clips.

Use extreme caution not to poke or break anything.

Edit:--- Really this should only be tried as a last resort, even then try the right hand side first where there's less chance of causing damage with whatever it is you are going to slide in there and twist.

I would also try leaving your car out in the sun and the clips may soften up.

Leave the nut loose, screw the screws in to the holes until you notice the bracket start to become uneven with the back of the gps. Last tighten the nut to the back of the bracket locking it into place.

From what I have read, and been able to find, there are not GPS kits available right now?

I am a little unclear as to where to place an actual order, if the kit is even available, and I decide to purchase the kit as there are numerous topics.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks.

Bigpopa,

That's correct. There is one $10 piece which Holden has no stock of at the moment & have no current supplier & no ETA.
Therefore complete kits cannot be put together until that issue is resolved.

EDIT --- The stock problem was resolved within a couple of weeks.

There is not one GPS kit to suit every situation.
The main differences are the type of new lower cubby required, the transmission type (manual or auto), and the model year of car.
If people provide all that info then I can price up the exact kit to suit their needs.

Here are the various combinations and latest prices before Holden ran out of parts.

I have been looking into this for a while, while still thinking of it, would probably prefer this over a custom media player.

i believe it would be kit A.

2009 Base, Automatic.
Chubby with cover, not the smokers.

Yes that's the one for those requirements.
I just checked again now and there's still no good news from Holden on supply of that one $10 part we need.

Maximum width would be 125mm.....you cannot fit cables into the sides if you max out the 125mm clearance between the airvents.

Would it be possible to get the measurements for the 4th picture down from edge to edge? It looks like it necks down a bit as it goes toward where the gps would sit.

The 102x59mm dimensions are taken on the inside which is the narrowest it necks down to.
Here you are looking from the inside to the outside.

Agreed. Would you be able to get me a measurement of where it is the widest which is at the very front of the console?

I tried it and it worked, but it only displayed a limited amount of engine parameters so now I'm using a DashBoss and my iPod. It did make for a clean setup though.

Actually the numbers are white. They look blue in the pics.

How well does the ipod fit? Did you download the application for the engine parameters? Do you have any pics???
I'm really curious, I think I may have a new project for the winter months

I guess I should've been more clear. I left the Garmin in place and use that as a GPS, and the iPod is mounted to the dash. The DashBoss module plugs into the OBDII port and communicates with the iPod via Bluetooth. It has it's own app. I'm not using the Garmin Mechanic/ecoRoute HD device anymore.

Thanks. The indentation on the right side bottom is a dimmer so at night it's not bright. It shows 18 parameters on 3 pages that I have set for 15 sec (every 15 sec it shows another 6 parameters). On the G8 you can pick 18 parameters out of 55. And the nice thing when you shut the car off it turns off, when you turn the car on it turns on, so you don't have to mess with it. You can't beat it for 60 bucks I bought one for my truck too.

Only if you really feel like it. I don't want you to have to go through the trouble just to put up a picture or two. Nice setup.

Sure beats the hell out of the Atari gauges (one of my only complaints about the car). $60 is a steal.
