View Full Version : Car is stalling on startup (Hotstart)

Car was recently retuned and it is having some trouble on start ups... it will start fine the first time I crank, but if I shut it off and try to start again (5 minute rest or so), it will not start... Jeff is aware of the problem, and could not seem to find a fix for it after I went down to his shop yesterday for a check up... It goes extremely lean when it stalls and Jeff could not come up with a solution for why it was doing so or how to solve it... He mentioned an "Afterstart" table on LS2 ECM's, but there does not seem to be one (yet) on the E38's... So i was wondering if any of the tuners had a solution for this... Oh and whether or not it matters, my CAI is MAF-less...

I'm having the same trouble on hot restarts, I'm going down to Vector sometime in June to get mine retuned......
Cold starts are 100% perfect though.....

From what I have learned it needs some more cranking air added to it. I had this issue as well and its gone now.

Are you running a MAF at all, or do you have a SD tune on it?

Many cars with a camshaft may develop this issue.
A quick and easy calibration change will cure the problem.

what exactly needs to be calibrated to prevent this?

I have this issue. It is more noticeable as the weather got hotter. I'm waiting to hear back from LIVERNOIS.
And what about the RPM bump after you take your foot off the gas ?? Can that be tuned out ??

When you have a decent sized cam and the throttle plate closes it is not uncommon to have an idle surge real quick to keep it from stalling.

Thanks.... Then I guess I still have two minor issues [the hot start & the converter rpm bump between 55 & 70 mph.]

Or anyone else with a cam & converter:
When bringing your car to a stop, does your car have any sort of lurch or vibrating when coming to a complete stop?
It almost feels like the breaks are uneven, but I think it is either a cam issue or a torque converter issue......

Awesome! Sounds good. I've been away from VMS for too long. My wife is wondering why all this money is just piling around the house! :)
I've been emailing back and forth with Dana Miller, about his car and stuff.
I'll call & email to set up an appointment soon.
Hope all is well.....

Add some airflow assist to the start up at the ECT's where it is occurring so you can better log what section of the VE table it is going lean. A hot start and cold start are 2 different sections of the VE table on a speed density tune. SD tuning sucks, unless you are boosted in my opinion, then it is the way to go.
