View Full Version : Walked a Shelby GT500

I just raced a Shelby GT500 Mustang. Guy was a novice, slept at the light and spun his DR's off the line. Must have had him by oh, about 50 yards at the end. I watched him the next race while my car was getting a cool down. His time, 14.2 @ 105 mph. Pretty sleepy I would say. Except for the DR's the car sounded dead stock, but hey it's a supercharged Mustang so ... he's fair game!

Nice kill! He had to have been totally pissed! Especially if he only though you were lightly modded.

What were your times?

hahaha, a kill is a kill. If he's stock your car should still run close with a stock GT500.

Nice! My Moms Ex has one, but he already admits after riding in mine he wouldn't even bother to try. I'm going to get him up to Livernois soon though to help him even the odds a little ;)

OK, OK, I just didn't improve on my posted time. 12.7's @ 114+ mph. Broken hood latch, couldn't do a cool down on the motor and it was hot and humid at the track. :)

Horrified astonishment! You know, like he knew he bought the wrong car. You don't want to buy a mid life crisis car and be blown off the track, that's just too much to deal with, on top of everything else that is going south.

Have you tried drag radials yet? Your 60' times are probably 2.0 or above .........

Still it's totally all good...... But I know how that feels.....

DR's, never gonna happen! I am going to try out the General Exclaims though when my Goodyear A/S's are done.

Didn't improve on my time and I'm sure I won't until winter comes to Florida again (just too hot and humid). By then, I'm quite sure you will have long passed me on the chart! And yes, I have never gotten below 2.0 on the 60 ft., but I think I could have gotten out of the car and sprinted to the 60 ft. faster than this GT500. :)

He had drag radial's and couldn't do better then 14's? Are you sure it was a GT500?

Well, it had the Shelby cobra badge, the GT500 decals & striping on the hood, he did say he had run as high as 110 mph. So I think it was the real deal, just needed the driver mod, big time.

Ok, I wasn't calling you a liar, just can't believe that he could drive that bad.

Well, they are listed as an UHP Summer Tire, but strangely they get very good reviews for all season weather including light snow. I think the traction in both dry and wet is going to be outstanding, and the price, well ... check it out on the Tire Rack for a pleasant surprise. :)

Pleasant suprise? (sarchastic?) I'll go check....

Light snow + UHP summer tire? I don't dare, not in Michigan....... But the wet/dry traction sounds good. You'll have to report back on these.....

$134 a tire isn't bad, compared to those $200 & $300 a tire Goodyears.....

Yea, I was serious. The price is dirt cheap for a quality tire for our sizes. I read one review from a guy that went through the entire winter in Iowa and these tires were performing so well he never took them off to put on his dedicated snow tires. I'd say that's pretty good. If the General Exclaims perform as good or better than the Goodyear RSA's then I would really want to get these as my next tire.

The RSA's worked this past winter in Michigan for me. They weren't as good as a dedicated winter tire, but I stayed on the road.....

Yep Mike, I agree with you about the Goodyear RSA's. They're pretty good tires actually. What I'm thinking is that the General Exclaims are much better in the dry and wet and about as good in light snow. At least that's the impression I have after reading lots and lots of reviews.

I'll be putting on a set in a couple of months, then I'll let you know how they are.

That is good news. I just bought a set of new wheels and summer only tires and kept the OEM all season wheels and tires for fall and winter driving. But that is a huge savings for tires in light snow or wet winter driving. That's saving @ $400 for a set compared to Good Year. As long as they work as described, I don't care what tires I have on for winter driving, especially if I can save some good $$$$.

This is a case of a badly needed driver mod. I have seen bolt-on GTs (not 500s) in the high 13s with an average driver. HP/weight says that they (the 540 hp gt500) should be around 12.8 or less. Something aint right!

My friend Matt ('02somz28) and I have personally driven a GT500 @ the race track locally here and can say they're over-hyped in stock form unless they've been modded. I had a 1.91 60ft on street tires and still only ran a 13.3, his was a bit slower @ 13.7. So I can say this guy's car with the mods he has, could've easily beat it even with a good driver.

I really hope you don't think that stock GT500's normally run 13.3's with a good driver unless you are encountering about 5000' DA.

Well you didn't include barometric pressure so I will just assume it was between 29.90 and 30.30in/hg or so. Even giving the benefit of the doubt on the BP the DA still calculates to AT LEAST 7500' above sea level. The air density in those conditions is almost 79% as dense as it would be at sea level in moderate weather conditions. That accounts for a HUGE difference in ET. When you do the correction factors all out with a 7500' DA you will see that the 1/4 mile times that GT500 would normally run is MUCH much quicker. Again, why state a 13.3 ET as not being that impressive, and the car being "overrated" when you already know that the reason why the ET wasn't that great was because environmental conditions.

Just a FYI, this Shelby was the previous 500 hp version. But hey, it's nice to know you don't have to worry about 'em, stock at least. :)
