I just took a look at the door sticker, and it says 04/08. But my car is listed as an 09 and it has all the 09 features.

Is this the same on anyone else?

Ah yes, well, you see......it's all rather embarassing, so pity you had to bring it up. Matter of fact my lovely PSM '09 has a production date of 3/08. This is important for several reasons. But first, a bit of history. In the early months of 2008 Holden agreed to allow adolescent kangaroos to start working the late shift as a sop to wild-eyed environmentalists angered by the news that Holden Commodores were responsible for approximately 68% of the kangaroo highway deaths around Elizabeth, AUS. As it turned out, the Holden V8's were woefully underestimated by young 'roos playing "chicken" on the province hiways and were being 'taken out' by joyful Holden drivers competing to see who could blast a young 'roo furthest down the hiway.

I've tried it, bloody good fun! But, back to the subject at hand.

All went well until it was discovered that young kangaroos appeared to care even less about what the date, or even the year was, than they did about making it across the road.

The good news for people like us is that after 5/08 the young 'roos discovered that other workers would pay them handsomly to smuggle in a few cold pints in their pouches for evening break. Sadly, the 'roos got greedy and the workers got thirstier which resulted in some unfortunate events where all Liquid Red G8 GT's of both '08 & '09 production were supplied with a de-tuned V6 engine after some undisclosed date. The clever and sly production people at Holden averted a disaster by adding a fake 7th & 8th cylinder made from left-over Fosters beer cans. Knowing full well that the autos were being exported to the bloody Yanks, they correctly assumed that anyone who would purchased a bright red automobile was "not quite right" anyway, the secret has been kept until now.

Amusingly, this has had the effect of causing most all owners of LIQUID RED G8's in America to go to extreme measures in a futile attempt to modify the cars so as to be able to keep up with a 3 cylinder Suzuki. It so happened that this "modding" frenzy turned out to be such a favorable thing for the American economy that all involved agreed to keep the secret. Until now, of course. So now you've done it! People like Charlie will simply admit defeat and resign themselves to mid 18 sec. 1/4 mile runs @ 57mph and likely go back to modding 2 cycle skate boards for the under 14 yr. old set.

Sad. Sad indeed. :(

R. Penquin, again correctly informed as usual. My 09 is also early production (No Bluetooth) but has the XM Radio (Lovely listening to Fox News and CNN) In fact, It was on either Fox or CNN that I heard of this report. I also heard that when the Fosters Beer was confiscated, the Roos stole aboard the transport ship which was to take the G8s to the U.S. and intentionally over torqued the tie down chains. In fact, I also heard that they were taking the aluminum pop tops and screwing with the brake pedal sensors. This was after the Roos got funny by swapping out the TPMS sensors off the 14" G3 for the G8s. God help us if they make a 2010 model.

That is weird. Mine is an 08 with a build date of 1/08. I guess mine was a late production. That's fine by me as it gives them time to work out the kinks..i.e.no leaking rear main, struts are still good, no rubbing.

By jove, PL! You have indeed scooped my scoop! I hadn't heard that yet, but sense it does indeed make. The 'roo bar that is an official dealer add-on accesorry in Oz is beefy enough to send the buggers a good long way if you catch one square on at 85+.

While it's difficult to fault the buggers for a bit of retaliation, it's not the blokes fault that the flea infested goofballs misstime their run accross the macadam now is it? The nasty hopping big rats know they are safer over here in the US since "roo bashing" is not yet a national pastime. An average 'roo hit is even more damaging than deer and 85 yr. old confused women drivers. WE need a 'roo bar mod! Are ya listening Pedders? :p

my guess would be that the new year usually comes out in sepember the year before ex 2009 at the dealers on the 9th month of 2008 it takes 3 months if you order one so i'm guessing they start makeing are 2009s the first few months feb march april cause they would want to have a few thousand to ship by june to be at the dealer by september ....

just my guess thought my 2009 is dated 06-2008

Under cap and trade regulations the production G8s are being shipped to North America via Clipper Ship. Although the sailing run can be completed in just 47 days, they can only carry four G8s at a time. The enviros were very upset at all the trees being cut down to build the Clipper ships, so they are made out of tightly woven hemp, however the crew has taken to smoking and nibbling on the structure which means the ships are only good for two or three round trip runs at best.

In the future, all G8s will come with a copy of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" in the CD player, naturally a burned copy downloaded off of Kazaa. They will also be a faint aroma that will make you strangely hungry after driving for 15 minutes. G8 drivers may get frequently pulled over for driving 15, 20 MPH under the speed limit.

Mine is an '09 with a build date of 06/08. With car co.'s looking to release next year's model in Fall they would need to get a ahead start with mfg. With these imported an even earlier start to the model year would be needed.

IMO - model year is important for features offered and retained value, build date is more of just a curiosity and to determine how long the car has been sitting somewhere...dealer lot, distribution point, etc.

to make sure of the year check your 10th dig of vin 1=2001 , 2 =2002 and so fourth. 7=2007 , 8 = 2008 , 9=2009 and A=2010 and so on...

So in dealing with my trans flare, the production date came up... on my GMVIS it shows 12/08 as a production date. The door sticker and fender plate show 8/08.

My service manager says we have to go by the GMVIS. I bought the car in 2/09. It was dealer traded locally and I seriously doubt that the car made it here in less than 8 weeks through the shipping and the transporting once here.

anyone have any other information on production dates?

Is there somewhere a date or a way to determine production date of the transmission? The "version" of the part with issues is the important piece not when the car was imported. I've noticed dates on many of the parts on my car when tearing into it. Has gm released a vin breakout for your issue yet?

BINGO.

Most of the world shows dates as day/month/year and many countries go by military time. We're actually a bit oddball in the US by showing the date as month/date/year.

The GXP eng and manual trans are both made in Mexico by the way.

Back to the original question:

Car companies can now bring out a "new model" year almost a year in advance now. This was a change made several years ago, like over 10 years I think. For example Chevy released the 2010 Camaro back in the spring so they will have over 18 months of production for the 2010 Camaros. This is mostly a marketing thing. Real often you will see a "new model" year released in Jan/Feb of the previous year. So you will see a 2010 model that was released in early of 2009. So a 2010 is a 2010 for almost two years. None of the manufacturers adhere to the traditional Sep release of new models anymore. They will release it when they think they can time the market the best. So it makes it a little confusing for the consumer. The only time you see a traditional September launch is for models that are not significantly changed from one year to the next.

Why the G8's have such weird production dates I don't know other than they probably made them early because of transit times and that is when the Aussie plant was making a run of G8's. Pontiac may have rushed the 2009's in the faint hope of sparking sales to save the brand or to just get production over with so they could start the wind down of the brand.

The Roo stories are pretty entertaining but definitely confusing to the drunk reader...

I don't think transit times was that bad. My 05 GTO was built in July 05 and it was on the lot in Oct 05.

They were a little late to the "revolution" party as far as on the ground assistance and we did repay them by bailing them (and the English) out of two world wars. Debt repaid with interest! ;)

The G8 Trans is a 5 speed automatic and built in Strausburg France. The G8 GT and the GXP 6 speed Automatics were made in two place: Early G8 GT's tranmissions were made at Ypsilanti Michigan but then transferred over to Silao Mexico in Jan 2008. Unless you have a very early 2008, then you have a MEXICAN built transmission (your sticker may say transmission built in USA but it is was actually built in Mexico. My G8 GT has this and it was built in Mexico....... to be sure, look at transmission tag on the trans and if it says "STO" on it then its MEXICAN....

Let me know what information you need---- I can get every piece of info you need...... if you want your transmission test records-- I can get them for you. I ca get the location, the build date, the final test date, etc....

Also, if you are wondering about your seals for the flare issue, please see the following:
If you transmission was built on after 11/5/08 then your transmission has the updated stator shaft, oring, and new peek seals. If it was made before it, then it is the old style. I know this for a fact because I helped implement this change in Mexico, ypsilanti, and also Toledo.

If you need any help or proof or anything, please let me know. Just send me your transmission number and I can help......need the 8 last digits after the CVA.............

While Penguin was on the Red topic - among the 50 or so he addressed - I'd just like to add to the record that Red is the first color on this :qf:. Oh, and my 09 GT has a 05/08 build date - it's MGM btw, which is nowhere to be found on that "list."

This also brings to question of when someone builds a drag car that's a garage queen, does that make that person a drag queen?

Precisely.
Oh and sorry for introducing some facts to this mostly bullshit thread.

The new model year starts on the first day of April each year.....April Fools Day......so easy to remember.

So if your car was built on 01/04/2008 then it would be a very very early MY2009 car.
