For the last six months rumors have been surfacing about what the 2010 model-year would bring for the Pontiac G8. Those six months brought rumors of the death of the Pontiac brand entirely, the official death of the Holden Ute-based Pontiac G8 Sport Truck and rumors that the V6 would be changed out in the G8. Well, thanks to some keen-eyed dealerships alerting GMI, we can finally confirm that the 2010 Pontiac G8 will be getting a welcomed change; a new engine and transmission.

That's right, 2010 is bringing the now well-known direct injected 3.6L High-Feature V6 to the G8 base model. Currently the car is strapped with the port-injected 3.6L that is good for 256 HP. GMI has not yet been able to confirm the power rating of the new G8 V6, but we anticipate it to be near (likely a bit lower than) the 304 HP rating on the all-new Chevrolet Camaro and the Cadillac CTS. Aside from more power, another benefit to the direct injection technology is better fuel economy. The 2009 G8 V6 is rated at 17 MPG city and 25 MPG highway. Like the power ratings, we were unable to confirm any fuel economy projections. The same engine in the 2010 Camaro does 29 MPG, so possibly the new G8 V6 will get closer to that on the highway.

To continue on GM's method of applying the new direct injection engines and transmissions, the G8 V6 will also get a six speed automatic transmission standard. This will replace the current car's five speed automatic. At the current time no other major changes are expected, but stay tuned for developments on the 2010 G8 as we now have sources watching for more changes.

Good deal. I've driven a co-worker's CTS that has the same motor and it's surprisingly quick, power is honestly unexpected, you get put back in your seat that's for sure.

EXCELLENT. Finally some positive news that makes me happy. Off topic slightly but do you know of anything else about the 2010 model year? When they are supposed to come out, pricing, any new colors??? Color is my main question to be honest. Thanks!

if this is true this single fact will be the best thing Pontiac has done in some time to help sales...

29mpg! That may swap the people who are buying up G6s to jump on the G8 bandwagon.

So will they offer it in the Malibu as well?

Hopefully not, I would think that would have some serious torque steer.

They probably will drop the 3.6 and use the 3.0 SIDI motor

What about any changes for the 2010 G8 GT?

I'm close to a purchase and would be pretty damn pissed if the very next year was significantly different.

+1. I'll feel burned if they replace the L76 with the LS3 in the GT model for 2010. :poof:

What would they put in the GXP then?

I can't even see an L99 being put in the GT, makes it too close to the GXP...

If this is true, it would make the base model worth owning for those of us that look for a balance between price and power.

kinda like computers and electronic parts........if you wait long enough, something will come out faster..and then what you were looking at will be cheaper..... but you're going to pay that premium for the "new model".

The DI V6 coming to the base model does sound good though, considering the minimal price difference between base and GT doesn't justify the 100 HP deficit. The mileage is attractive for those that travel a lot.

Great News! Next question, the auto trans will be a 6 speed, correct? Will a 6 speed MT be available?

All this is now out the window. There will be no G8's produced in calendar year 2010 for certain. Whether they will produce any more now above and beyond the reported 2 years worth supply in the system is anyone's guess. If they do go ahead with a short 2010 model year with the DI and 6-speed auto it will be a great car. This combo rated very high in the Camaros. Manual never in the works for US, but parts from a Camaro will prolly fit.

^ Yup, it would make no economic sense to put more into a vehicle whose demise is eminent, unless…hum…

Either way, I would guess sales of all should pick up between now and then…But then when the credit card bill for the 3.2 trillion stimulus package comes due to be paid, with interest accrued…Well, I’m not ruling out Armageddon LOL!

It looks like the 2010MY G8 will have a short run, since Holden is cutting back factory output now and halting production by end of 2009. The engine/tranny refresh on the V6 was probably just a cost-saving decision with very little R & D required. I would be very surprised if anything else is changed from the 2009.5 updates for 2010. The good news might be that it looks like 2010 models will be at fire sale prices.

If Armageddon comes, I'm installing a supercharger, sawed-off shotgun with holster, and maybe a new paint job.
