My Beltronics 955 has saved my butt more than a few times, lately the local cops have been using laser also, no problems, I'm really impressed with the rear detection distance also.I know it's not a Valentine 1, but I believe it is the best rated for under $200. What if any do you guy's and gals use?

+1. I have V1 & Escort 8500. Slight edge to the V1, but nuthin' is gonna legally save you from well used laser. It's kinda like plinkin' you with a 9mm. If the cop is trained, and you are speeding just right (what he has decided to stop the next car for,) you are well and truly F*UCKED! :hang:

I gave up on radar detectors back in college. Got 2 tickets with mine (don't remember what kind, but was ~$300) because the cop just blipped me. Never had it on until it was too late. Both times the detector went squirrely full bars after I had already been busted. Was considering getting one this weekend or a netbook for hptuners... went with the netbook.

V1 which has saved my backside/wallet so many times it has paid for itself 100 times, however I just got my 1st ticket with it after nearly 10 years. Just as described, well run laser. braaap I was toast. There is no protecting against a patient selective cop and laser.:flame:

I hardwired my Bel STi today with the remote speaker and mute switch. My V1 is still sitting in a box on the counter. Gotta love Virginia. This fall I will probably be installing the 9500ci. The G8's roof line and black material are perfect for us VA drivers that need the detectors out of site.

Escort 9500 saved my butt countless times. I usually get plenty warning even against laser as long as there is someone out a mile or so in front that looks like a target for the bear, else you can be road kill with any detector.

I haven't looked to see if we have the mini fuses or the normal sized ones, but you can purchase something like this in both mini and regular at Autozone. Less than $10 and it's easy as hell to install. Just pull a switched fuse like your stereo, put both your stereo and RD fuse in and plug it back into the fuse box. Crimp the power from the RD hardwire kit and your all set.

You see, in the communistwealth of Virginia, radar detectors are illegal, so our cops have radar detector detectors, so I need a radar detector detector detector plus some jamming device...

Yeah, jamming radar comes with a $75,000 fine and mandatory jail time. It's a federal offense and not a state issue. What you need is either the Bel STi which is the only completely stealth windshield detector or the Bel STi-R or Escort 9500ci which are both remote mount detectors. The bel and escort remote mounts are identical with the exception the Escort comes with the ZR4 laser shifters and gps functionality.

I got my 9500ix mounted with the direct wire cord, mute button is near my right leg, I also didn't want the fugly suction cup mount on my windshield for my GPS unit so I cut some velcro strips stuck 2 on the bottom and 2 pieces on the back and it fits perfectly on the little ledge sticking out, and when I'm not using it, the cord fits right behind it.:)

My V1 is above the visor and the remote display by the gauge pod. I've always had my detectors above the visor so they are out of sight and surprisingly, they have worked very well both front and rear. I've been saved many times by my V1 and it's paid for itself again and again.

Sorry to tell you but it ain't gonna do s*** for laser there.

The best place for laser is as low on the windshield as you can get it (without it being blocked by windshield wipers or anything else).

lol, thats were it is,low just above the wipers.

Consider using Velcro to mount your detector on the dash or using the supplied windshield mounting brackets and mounting it low on the windshield. By mounting it this way, making sure that the windshield wipers are not blocking the front, you will draw the least amount of attention and obtain the best laser and radar detection

By the way, the suction cups that came with my 8500 x50 didn't stick worth a damn. I got some "premium" ones from Ebay (along with an extra bracket for my truck) and they're awesome. Cheap, too. Still doesn't solve the aesthetic problem of the suction cups, but I'll trade the slight ugliness for good laser protection.

BTW, mounting high is best for radar, but low isn't that much worse. It makes a HUGE difference for laser. It pretty much HAS to be low for laser.

I got the 8500 x50 over the comparable Bel (the RX65 or something? I forget now.) because it had the better laser detection by far, and only slightly worse radar detection. But I am not happy with the radar detection (it's existent and has saved me many times, but it's not as good as I wanted/expected), so either I got a bum of a detector or the x50 is just overrated. Really wish I went with the V1....

By the way, guys, for anyone really serious, laser jammers are legal in most states. Radar jammers are not, but laser jammers are. Just avoid the total crap like Escort, Blinder, etc. Another good resource: http://www.guysoflidar.com/

I've got a V1 mounted high and center to the left of my mirror and it picks up laser. It has saved me countless times. I also have the remote little box that mounts down low so other people can't see it especially at night. If I hear one little blip I instantly slow down. I can pick them up a long ways away.

The Escort ones he has listed at the moment are the regular ones. He has the premium ones listed for the V1 though. I dunno if they'll work for the Escort. The auction I bought from him was labeled "Premium Windshield Mount Suction Cups Escort Bracket"

Yes indeed.

I've had a V1 ever since about 1993, and it has save me many times. But yeah, nothing is perfect, especially against laser.

And even the best detector can't save you if you're the only guy on a two lane highway at 3:00 AM and the only other car on the road is a highway patrolman with instant on radar. Yeah, I got busted with the V1 once. But I've won more than I've lost!

I'm thinking the remote display for the V1 would look nice in the space where the Atari gauges used to go. Maybe put the remote control interface in the open space on the console opposite of the hand brake. Anyone tried this yet?

Hey everyone,

Being a Police Officer and knowing things from the other side of the radar waves I've got a question. When I run radar it's never left in the "transmit" mode. Meaning I'm not sending out radar waves all the time. I only hit the "transmit" button when I see a vehicle I wish to clock. Now if you were to approach me, with a radar detector, and I was to activate my radar would it not be too late for the warning to do you much good? The speed would already have been recorded by the radar unit.

I guess they're good for knowing when the Police are around and continuously clocking vehicles, correct?

BTW, I'd never write a G8 owner!

Thats the instant on or POP,which in that case you could only detect if traffic ahead of you is shot with the radar. Some cops around here have their radar on constantly while driving.

Like gearhead said it depends on what your local law enforcement professionals are running for speed detection. In my area of the country they primarily run Ka band broadcast radar guns, ocassionally I'll run across an older K band with some of the municipality guys. Have yet to see a PoP or LIDAR and acknowledge that it would probably be instant ticket if they started running those. That being said if you stick to the flow of traffic and only a few miles over you are pretty safe. The ones that stick out are the aggressive drivers doing well above the speed limit (there are new initatives here to resurrect old statutes that allow them to sieze your vehicle). When driving in low traffic situations you have to be careful, been caught once in SLO WHYT my 2008 TBSS as I zipped past an unmarked pickup at about 90mph. My "animal instincts" went off before he could get his radar gun on me and I got slowed down pretty fast. He gave me a warning after telling me that he usually gave retired Navy guys running radar detectors a ticket... he was a Marine. :nah:

Seriously off topic... he gave me a hard time about speeding and the radar detector but when I told him that I had spent time at MCAS Beaufort SC he and I "bonded"...

After action review says that I surpirsed him and by the time he got me gunned I was slowing down for the pullover. He asked me if I knew how fast I was going... "I honestly have no idea, I was lost in thought." I stay alert for that silver F150 now, along with the silver Marauder, the silver Mustang GT, and the silver Suburban... seems to be a theme here but can't quite put my finger on it...

I came darn close yesterday... From the stop sign, floored her to get close to 60 and let off the gas. In the school parking lot hidden from trees is LP's favorite undercover traffic car with the radar units mounted on the roof. I look over at my wife and give out the "oh shit." I slowed down more, and he never came out.

I didn't have the radar detector in, it was in my VW and (knock on wood) if I did get pulled over I would def do my best to get out of it. But I still hate the feeling when you know your speeding/messing around and then out of nowhere you see the Blue and Reds out the corner of your eye.

If you're shooting someone else with the radar gun and we're a half a mile (or if you have my piece of crap X50, about 5 inches) back then you'll get the warning.

-Radar, being radio, is not NEARLY as directional, and is MUCH easier to detect
-Radar takes longer to get a signal than laser, though it can still be pretty fast.

I gotcha.

When I get a reading and there are several cars involved I turn to the next method of speed determination; vision.

If I get a reading of 60mph in a 40mph zone it's pretty easy to spot the car traveling at the higher speed. If there's any doubt in which car it is I let them go, it's not worth writing the wrong person a ticket, and it's just wrong.

Wish all cops were like that. I haven't gotten screwed myself but I have been in the passenger seat when my friends have, when they weren't speeding.
