View Full Version : Livernois Stage 1 Cam Install!

BobtheMonkee

I just ordered a G8 DoD Delete Stage 1 L92 Cam package today! YAY! Should be here next week sometime.

I'll be installing this one myself during my post surgery convalescent leave that starts next wed! My goal is to take a ton of pictures and write a partial DIY guide for the install of a new cam and deletion of DoD on our vehicles. Also, when im done, i'll be able to assist other PNW G8'ers with DIY cam swaps if necessary! :D

so, i'll keep this thread updated when i recieve the cam and actually start the install. I put this thread in the PNW section because it would just get drowned in the endless spam of threads in other relating forums and i want it to be a good reference for other PNW guys. :D

I REALLY want this and cannot find anyone in the area that will touch it?? Please keep us updated on how it goes. (are you doing anything to the heads why they are off?)

other than clean out the carbon deposits, probably not. I asked Livernois if porting them would do any good and they told me the gains wouldnt be worth the cost.

We will find out unless I decided to get there stage two heads. While you have them off mill them to bump the compression a little.

Take LOTS of Pictures dude , write down tools required etc etc since i may be following in your footsteps!

and I think Norpac may do it - gonna email them the parts list and see what they say - or if I want to rip out the engine I know a place 5 minutes from me that'll do it all (forged internals etc) Lol

Steve,
Definitely let me know what Norpac says. Rich and started talking about dyno tuning and stuff and well, I was going to ask him the same thing but wanted to get down to business regarding the Pedders install.

hell Livernois is looking for a dealer out here... they should get Norpac and fly a tech out to Washington and they can train Norpac with our cars! Double win.. livernoise sells 2 kits and Norpac get $$ from 2 install jobs!

got pretty far today...radiator is out, intake manifold is off, valley cover is replaced (gotta ask livernois about the gasket tomorrow, i think it was already on the valley cover, but im not sure ), both headers disconnected. I even had to stop for a couple of hours to get a damn fuel line disconnect tool.

Hopefully i can get the heads off and call it a night....im EXHAUSTED!!!!!

Having a blast though...my first engine teardown is going fantastic :)

I'll upload pics from the first day in the morning.

Steve, you should try to come out here and take a looksie while everything is apart. I'll probably start re-assembling stuff on saturday, but if ur free sunday, you should stop by for a lil while ;)

Now charlie has me thinkin....maybe i should just get a damn converter, since i may have to drop the tranny for the oilpan anyways...but im short on cash :(

Why do you have to drop the oil pan? For the cam install or something else?

I'm curious about this as well.

You don't drop the entire pan because you need to lift the engine to do that. You have to drop the front part of the pan to remove the oil pump so that you can install the new tensioner. Not to jack your thread, but here are some pics:

beat me to the oil pan question :) any extra help that can be added to this thread is VERY welcome

Here are some pics from day one. Didnt get a chance to take the heads off, but i got a good start, working on the heads this morning.

My dilemma is still figuring out how to get the pulley off. I dont have the transmission lock that the manual calls for, so i have to do it another way. If i can get the heads, pulley, and engine front cover off by the end of the day, i'll be happy!

ManofSteel: thanks for the complement, i can make a sig for you if you would like :) it will have to wait till after the cam install

I normally use a crow bar between the stall and the fly wheel and turn it until the crow bar stops against the ground. There is a small window under the trans to do this.

You should have got a new balancer bolt with your kit. Are you using an ARP bolt if not the old one doesn't go back on? I was more talking about a longer balancer bolt to begin the press of the balancer back on. You will need a bolt about 1 inch longer unless you have another plan of attack.

I know I am not from the the PNW, but thanks for doing this. I am undertaking the same project in four days. And this should be a lot of help. I could not agree with you more about the Navy coveralls. They are awesome. I got out in 05. I was a nuke MM, onboard a target.

BobtheMonkee
05-03-2009, 09:28 PM
Ah yes, the infamous floating target! I'm a bubblehead myself ;) If you have any questions about the install, feel free to contact me and i'll be able to assist now :)

Install is going well, got the old cam out and new cam in today. Found a GREAT way to hook up the oil pump without fumbling with the pickup tube...just disassemble and reassemble the pump...so easy...literally took me just under an hour to completely reinstall the oilpump!!!

I took tons of pictures of that method, because i had not heard of it from the other guys i talked to about the cam install...got a boat load of new pics to post soon

so today, i started the rebuild. I damaged one viton seal, so i really hope livernois will overnight me one...that will hold up everything :(

BobtheMonkee
05-05-2009, 04:05 PM
got a problem...everything is put back together...and when i turn the key to on, i get very low fuel light and stability control is off...and my hp tuners doesnt even recognize an ECM.

I'm assuming its a ground problem, but i'm not sure where. It would be awesome to see where all the grounds are so that i can check them all

Steve

BobtheMonkee
05-05-2009, 05:02 PM
yeah, just talked to him...he said he's seen the problem before and it was the ground on the back of the driver side heads. I checked the ground and it seems to be fine. I cant really take the nut off due to clearance issues.

gawd, i hope i can get this issue fixed....the car is ready to be started :(

You might disconnect your battery for a few minutes or pull your ECM fuse.

BobtheMonkee
05-05-2009, 05:37 PM
tried the battery thing...you mean pull the ecm fuse and try reading it?

g8_795
05-05-2009, 05:40 PM
No, I was more thinking just remove the power from everything for a while either through battery disconnect or fuse removal. Remove power long enough to allow capacitor's to discharge and everything. Probably 10 minutes to be sure. Beyond that, it has to be a connection/ground somewhere like you previously thought.

BobtheMonkee
05-05-2009, 06:44 PM
man, im stumped...i removed the ground on the back of the driver sided heads and the wire looks fine, i'm getting the very low fuel warning and the stability control of warning. i'm about to start removing the whole main wire run to look for damaged wires

-Ray-
05-05-2009, 06:47 PM
Do you think you damaged some wires?
I take it you have a new ECM.

RxApple
05-05-2009, 06:52 PM
I assume it hasn't flashed a service engine light yet??? When I didn't plug my MAF sensor in, got the Traction light... What about an injector not being pushed in all the way... I have no idea, just throwing out ideas. I would assume it could be a problem with something in the fuel system...

GRRRR8
05-05-2009, 07:13 PM
This really sounds like a ground at the head front or rear as we discussed. I wouldnt think a harness could be damaged. It one of those things that you kind of know if you damaged it. Check the ground at the pass head. It should be: ground wire-then the stud-then the little bracket-then the nut. There is really nothing else that you disconnect taking the heads off that has to do with grounds.

BobtheMonkee
05-05-2009, 08:39 PM
i have a fluke that does resistance, if i take off the ground wires and connect the fluke between them, i should get 0 ohms right?

grandmacpubah
05-05-2009, 10:27 PM
0 ohms means you are shorted, or you have continuity. So for example if you had a wire that was grounded to your car's frame and you measure that lead against your negative batt terminal you will get 1 or 2 ohms (resistance in the wire or frame of car accounts for the couple ohms)

I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to measure (sounds like you trying to find out if something is grounded?) But if you are measuring for ground on a wire place the other lead on something you know is grounded, i.e., batt terminal or ground wire to frame etc...

BobtheMonkee
05-06-2009, 10:13 AM
i have begun re-disassembly of the wiring harness...hopefully i can get enough of it out to inspect every inch of it. I'm thinking there is a cut wire somewhere

Steve
05-07-2009, 02:19 PM
has the beast arisen yet?

BobtheMonkee
05-07-2009, 04:07 PM
yes, the beast is up and running...looks my electrical repairs did the trick!

BUT...i got an engine high temp alarm after letting it idle for 10 minutes...really lopey with the tune i have on it now. I ran a data log an my engine coolant temp was hovering around 200F. After i got the alarm, i turned the car off and the fans stayed on for another 5 minutes...

something wrong or is that normal for this swap?

Bhuge

Any more pictures Bobthemonkey? I start my cam install tomorrow morning. I am sure I will be back on here looking for guidance.

g8_795
05-07-2009, 04:49 PM
200F is normal. My car will go from 198-210 when just idling.

The stock tune will not keep the fans on after you turn the car off just unless your ECT reaches 266 degrees.

I think you have a problem.

g8_795
05-07-2009, 04:52 PM
Did you make sure to monitor your coolant levels as you idled your car for the first time? Stupid question I know.

BobtheMonkee
05-07-2009, 05:31 PM
nope not a stupid question...because i was stupid...i did not fill the radiator the whole way so the pump was sucking air!

disaster averted :P

I will post what pics i have left tonight...should help with the install a lot!

wow....i am amazed at the power difference...this car has REALLY woken up!

The Beastmaster just got beastlier!!!

Thank you to everyone who helped me with this project...i couldnt have done it without you! I learned a TON from this install. I know my engine much better than i did before and finally fully understand how an internal combustion engine works! This was a fun, yet nerve racking experience. I definitely see more engine tear downs in the future.

If I remember right Bob pinched a wire while installing the heads or some part. The lesson: Be really careful of wires when removing and re-installing parts.

Andy@Livernois
11-19-2010, 04:24 AM
correct, the ground wire that runs to the back of the head got pinched and broken when installing the heads from what I remember.

goldz28
12-05-2010, 10:58 PM
I think there was some kind of tape or electrical tape and he cut it and cut clean through the ground wire on the back of the head. He was not to happy about having to take that head off again. He had to splice and extension which was a tricky job not having alot of room back there.

BobtheMonkee
04-22-2011, 12:56 PM
nope, actually, when i was taking the passenger head off, instead of popping the little wire run plastic retainers on the back of the head off, i cut the ziptie....leading to me cutting 5 wires in that wire run. One of the wires clipped was main power to the ECU :O. I wasnt aware that there were just plastic pop outs and it was cramped back there. Oh well, lesson learned. I decided to take the head back off to repair the wires instead of pulling the whole wire run down from under the car. Prolly ended up being harder than it needed to be, but this was the first time i've ever take apart an engine :)

20k miles later, engine is running strong (except for a damn rogue evap leak and small exhaust leak from one manifold :( )
