View Full Version : Sweet mother of god. (rant then a question about lug nuts)

I went to put my new shoes on today. First step is taking off the old ones, right?

1) Damn, I don't have a socket big enough for the stock gigantor lug nuts. Trip to Home Depot, $28 for a set of SAE sockets.
2) WTF. My socket fits, but apparently the lug nut is metric. I could try it anyway, but the wheels are impacted to shit, and the nuts begin stripping. Back to home depot. I need a metric socket a hair smaller than what's in my hand. $5 for a 19mm.
3) I get to the car, and give it a go. WTF. It's nowhere near the right size. How is that? Oh, I grabbed the wrong socket to bring in to compare to:wacko: I go back in for a $5 21mm socket.
4) Back to the car, that doesn't fit either. God damnit. I just spent $38 already. Home depot doesn't carry above a 21mm. Sears is closing in 25 minutes, and is 20 minutes away. Good thing I have a 6.0L V8! $7 later, a 22mm!
5) I get home, strip a few lugs slightly, but get the first wheel off. The new wheel fits, but barely. sex! I go to put the lug nuts provided on. Twisting. Twisting....Twisting. WTF, it won't catch. MOTHERFUCKER, they're too small!

So, 3 hours later, no shiny new shoes. Sucks to our fancy Holdens and their south-of-the-equator sizing. I'm not waiting for new lug nuts to ship, I'm going to autozone or something.

So, can anyone tell me what size/pitch lug nuts I need? Hopefully I can find them. I need big enough for our giant studs, yet small enough for the tuner-sized holes in the wheel.

14x1.5

searching yielded "M14-1.5 stock lug nut"

Is that correct? The ones provided were M12-1.5, and didn't fit. The threaded hole was too small. That's the 12 vs 14 part of the number, I assume?

Yes 14x1.5 is our lug size. We run the same size as most Chevy trucks

As usual, Holden makes it hard to break. :p

Who shipped you the wrong lugs? If you need hub rings, did they send you the wrong ones of those too? Our hub is 67.1mm. Some wheel suppliers are sending GTO hub rings and GTO 12mm lug nuts. That happened to me. Luckily I had the correct items by chance.

The 14 is in millimeters and means the outside diameter of the stud. The 1.5 is millimeters and means the spacing between each thread.

VQMotoring. I'll let them know. We still don't know if it was a packing mishap, or if they have it wrong in their system. What size are the GTO rings? The rings I was given fit both the wheel and the hub snugly. They're snug enough where it stuck to the hub when I took the wheel off. I'm assuming that's correct, unless there's a 1/10 of a millimeter difference, and they're supposed to be hammer-on tight. I doubt that, though.

The hubcentric ring has rounded edges on one side. While I'm here, I'd like to verify. The rounded inside edge faces toward the hub, so it's easy to get on?

Awesome, sounds about right. Assuming the lugs are readily available, we'll try this again tonight.

it seems like VQ is prone to having some mishaps when shipping correct tire parts and so forth ?

Last night's mishap:

1) Took me 5 stores to find 14x1.5 lugs. Another $40 flushed down the drain. Ended up doing 20 locking ones for $35, and 4 regular lugs for $5. Kinda the opposite of norm, but I'm fed up at this point.

2) Get 2 wheels on. Nice

3) 3rd wheel, stuck lug. They were all tight, but this one's crazy. Stomp on it with a breaker bar. Hurt my knee. Roll around making Peter Griffin shin kick noises, holding my knee. Try for another hour, completely round off the nut. Curse and wake up the neighbors. Stock wheels...back on.

Today:

1) Stop by my local shop that I use for everything. Was planning on flipping shit, but then again, I didn't help by stripping it. I said "Someone torqued the crap out of this lug with an impact gun, and I stripped it trying to get it off, can you help?"
2) They know me, good guys. I think they realized it must have been them that over-torqued it. I skipped to the front of the line, and drove right into bay #2. They even let me in the shop.
3) We try with all kinds of tools, nothing. Eventually use the reverse threaded nut remover (nicknamed "the wife." ok, I made that up.).
4) "This thing is on tight. The stud's going to break."
5) "Screw it, what choice do we have? I'll just replace the stud"
6) Snap
7) It wasn't the stud! It was the lug breaking free! The wheels will be on tonight! I gave him $10 cash for lunch for helping me out.

So, Nearly $100 later for tip, tools, and lug nuts...we may see these wheels on the car yet!

First I've heard of anything. I'm assuming it was just bad information in their system, or a fluke. Our cars are still new, nobody seems to know what fits them, yet.

The correct hub rings are the 72mm67mm ones from VQ. Our hubs are 6.1mm. If the wheels were originally designed for a BMW like the Breyton's you need a 72.62 outside diameter. Most of the TSW wheels are 72 mm diameter from what I have been able to determine. VQ tried to get me to buy the lugs locally but I balked and made them send me the correct ones. Since I had an extra chrome set that I had purchased from TireRack that I used with stock Sport wheels, I was able to install wheels on car. In the end, VQ sent me 2 sets of the correct hub rings, so I now have 2 spare sets!

I think VQ should have learned from my experience in Dec-Jan, and by now have updated their info and be shipping the correct support products. NO EXCUSES - Discount and TireRack are correct, why not VQ????

WTF. Now I'm pissed. I spent $45 to find the damn lug nuts locally. I was ok with this assuming it was a mistake, but now it just sounds like negligence.
