I just read this on the other G8 Board. And Mike from New Era gave some great insight as to how much one may loose on the dyno from having a Torque Converter.

I'm going to dyno before the converter is installed.

I'm going to see if Kirk will dyno before and after my 3200 stall. I'm very curious about this, and it might ease the minds of others who have lower numbers than they thought they would.

Darkside: Yes, I would be really interested to know how much we loose on Vector's Mustang Dyno with the 3200 Yanks in.

I know I shouldn't get all totally caught up in dyno numbers, but it would be nice to know that I'm making 390rwhp vs. 355rwhp.

I know 1/4 mile times are king, but definitely know what your dyno pulls are before & after the Torque Converter! :)

All low number issues can be settled when they go to the track. Don't compare dyno #s, compare track times.

I guess I really dont understand why there is HP #'s lost? I understand the "loose" converter thing but shouldnt that not be an issue at the Higher RPM's?

I confirmed with Kirk, and this will be tested in the first week of April. Should be interesting.

Does locking the TCC not help this?

Besides the PWM on the clutch, I thought this would almost get you 1:1 from engine RPM to transmission input RPM.

Is this not the case?

This cannot be said enough.

So I ran a test going home from work today regarding the TCC locking up vs the stall naturally locking up. Here is what I saw:

When I locked the TCC the "Engine RPM"/"Transmission RPM Output" was right where is was suppose to be. ZERO error.

When I didn't lock the TCC mannually here is what I saw in 3rd gear (should be 1.53 ratio):
3000: 3.90
4000: 2.20
5000: 1.83
5400: 1.68

I have a 3600 stall. I didn't go WOT until 4200 so this test may be biased. I will run a complete WOT throttle run tomorrow and see what happens.

I thought this was interesting. So it appears you should be able to lock the TCC on the dyno and get accurate results. Does anybody know if locking the TCC on a dyno is a bad idea?

i have always locked up the converter. i lock up going down the track too. i bet locking it up halfway thru 3rd would pick up a little et and mph on a stock car.

i dont know what the stock lock up is rated for but i bet it would be fine on the dyno especialy if you locked it before you went wot. once you make the converter smaller and then add power too then the lock up might not hold at wot but i bet it would.

when i get a converter i will be ordering a tripple disk and locking it up whenever i want even at very high hp.

Because of the pwm tcc you will not be able to lock it up on the street or you will be in for a rough ride with the triple disc. Just so you know.
