View Full Version : Grinding sound from left front....... Help

I have what sounds like a bad wheel bearing. It only happens when I turn right aggressive. Just a little turn like on ramps at any speed above 30ish or hard turn like parking lot at 5 or above.
It's not the wheel bearing. I have new ones up front and the old one is still tight. I mounted it to a solid table and could not get it to move. I even switched the right and left again to verify. Nothing changed.
The dust shield is not the issue because I made sure it had clearance and even removed it to verify.
The entire suspension of the car is 100% new with about 1k on it.
History of the car.... I bought it wrecked in the front driver side. The front control arm broke in the wreck but the sub frame and suspension was all replaced. Only thing I can think is the steering rack but I don't know why it would make that noise. The one in it is tight and don't give me any issues it seems.

Anyone else have this problem? I'm stumped on it and don't want to buy a rack and it not be the problem.

Thanks for looking

Got nothing for you, man. Maybe Rob@WretchedMS?

Is your tire rubbing the wheel liner?

What size tires do you have up front.

Are you sure its coming from the front?

Is your tire rubbing
^ THIS

I had the same situation: when I'd crank the wheel hard and accelerate I'd hear a grinding noise, didn't matter if it was to the left or right going forward or reverse. Turns out the front drivers side wheel and tire were rubbing on the lower part of the strut under after the shock/spring assembly. I had it aligned and adjusted right down to a nano-nano-millimeter and sol good now.

I. Sure it's the front.
Don't seem to be rubbing
I took the liner out to verify.

Only other thing I can think is the strut washer is touching the body and transferring the noise from the shock.

My tires are 275 on a 9.5 +34mm first I took tape and put it where it looks like it could rub and cranked the wheel. Nothing. And it makes the same noise when it was stock hight and lowered. Just a little turn or all the way.
This really has me stumped..... Probably something simple like a slap the forehead moment

The washer at the top of the strut would make more of a clunking noise over bumps, vs a bearing type noise.

Why do you think it's NOT a bearing?

I think it's not a bearing because the one before was tight and the one in now is new and I even switched the sides to see if the noise changed sides. No luck.
What I'm saying about the washer is this. When you turn your caster angle changes so the washer also changes. It may be hitting the body when that happens and transferring noise. But there seems to be plenty of space under.
I feel I'm smart enough to figure out the problem but it's really got be stumped....... It's got to be something simple or something that you would never think would do that.

does the sound change with speed?
does it stay constant or only due it with the steering at certain positions?
does it knock at all or just grind, hum,
does it get better or worse when you do sweeping left to right turns at speed.

i really need more info to go on

you can have a bearing be bad and not have play, but if the noise is still there and unchanged with the new bearing i'd agree.

Its constant that it's the same hum with a little grind noise on a slight slow but also a little louder when faster and sharper. However when the sound happens I can turn the wheel back towards center a little and the noise goes away when the weight shifts but returns when it comes back. I'm going g to verify that the tire isn't hitting the liner by removing it on a test ride but that won't happen until my work schedule changes. Until that happens she will sit and wait.
Today I was getting on the highway and there was seem bumps and the noise did not change on the bumps. Very constant sound with load change.

More info is the noise was the same with 30k mile stock suspension as it is with new suspension all around and much much bigger tires with very very little room around them. As I said before the tire done seem to hit anything at all. I can make the sound at 5 mph turning the wheel 90* in a parking lot.

still sounds like a bearing... lol
check the rotor for shiny marks from hitting the knuckle, caliper.

where do you live?

Pa.
Rotor is fine. Removed the dust cover.
It made the same noise with stock brakes and wheels as brembos and new wheels. It does sound like a bearing. But three different bearings were on that knuckle and the noise is the same.
If it was a bad bearing when I switched them the noise would come from the other side. Like I said in the first post the only thing I think is left is the rack but I can't see how the rack will make a noise like that.
The tie rod don't look to effect anything in the knuckle either.
