I know some of have been wondeing what is crazy Charlie going to do with that G8 next. Well with the help of Pace Performance (Greg) and a lot of reading about the new LS3 "hot" cam engine I have come up with a plan. For those that dont know the LS3 "hot" cam engine is 480HP/475TQ with manifolds on it. My plan is to build our 6.0 engine with all the valvetrain from that engine including the sodium valves. If I had to guess it should be 410-430RWHP and 390-410RWTQ. That will be plenty and it will have a smooth idle and get great gas mileage with no AFM. I look forward to a long relationship with Pace Performance on all my GM projects. If any of you need any GM parts of any type give them a call or leave them a message on this site. Thank You Greg for you time and interest.

The GM Performance Parts engineers picked the LS Hot Cam (p/n 12617570) to take the LS3 to the next level. This cam specs out with .525-inch intake and exhaust valve lift. Duration (@ .050 inches) is 219° intake and 228° exhaust.

Should work OK.

I have met Greg and dealt with him in the past and have nothing but good things to say about him and Pace. He and Pace were/are big in the Pontiac Grand Prix forums and provide me with a lot of help and parts for my GTP. I have talked with him about G8 GXP upgrade for our G8s and hoped he would be a regular on our forum.

WaHooo!

Sounds like an admission ticket to the 500hp club to me Charlie…

But don’t forget the pics, pics, and even more pics!

Or will the GRRRRChick be doing that also?

If so I’ll understand… :poke

LOL!

Cheers!

I am looking forward to the install. I will take pics too. I just talked to Roy @ ICON Motorsports and they are more then happy to donate dyno time!

I can't wait to see what this setup does.

:headbang:

I anxiously await your results.

I had to keep up with you! Did you drop the car off today?

That sounds awesome, Charlie! Can't wait to follow the progress. I have dealt with Pace in the recent past on stuff for my LT1. Very easy to work with. I am sure you will enjoy the relationship.

I dropped it off last night.

Of course, there was a problem with the trans jack and long story short, it won't be ready until tomorrow. :(

I just tell myself, it's ok, I can wait one more day...

Isnt that always the way it goes.

Can't wait to see the result. Especially what the gas mileage ends up at. If it's good, my no cam plan will be given up really fast.

Charlie, what parts do you plan on changing when doing this HOT CAM conversion?

GRRRR8
08-22-2008, 08:15 AM
Cam, lifters, intake valves, cam gear, valve springs, head gaskets, lifter buckets, timing chain damper, valley cover (eliminating DOD) and misc items

Tell us about the heads, they have to come off, so what are you going to do while they're off?

Stuff.

You're going to stuff them? Seems like that would be counterproductive.

I know, bad joke :punch:

I was just giving George a hard time. lol

It's A G8!

Its been my experience that when you do the "stuff" mod, the results are impressive! :bpress:

LMAO! It is true.

That's a smart plan, GM developed the parts ,and the dyno numbers they state are usually on the money.

GRRRR8

Well I just kept reading 480/475 and it was only 12 cu in more and with manifolds. I crossed all parts to find out every difference and found the intake valves are hollow(doing them too) and compression was a little bit more(doing that too) Other then that the engines power wise should be close. Now add ARH and all my bolt ons and I cant see not getting over 500 at the flywheel.

I wish I had the camera rolling for you Rick when I did a 150ft tire smokin burnout when I got the headers done. No converter either!

Hey Charlie, I'm sure you have see this, but if you haven't take a look at this.

It is an LS2 crate motor (same bore and stroke as an L76) with L92/L76 heads and the hot cam, same as the one in the LS376/480.

It makes peaks of 467hp and 440tq. It is on page 107 of the 2008 GM performance parts catalog. If you don't have one it can be viewed in a PDF format at http://www.gmperformanceparts.com . if you go into the "dyno" and "build" the LS2 with the L92/L76 heads and hot cam you can then print this sheet that shows the dyno results. Being that they are starting with the crate motor Iassume they are using manifolds.

http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/_res/flash/engine_dyno/deploy/swf/csv/LS2/12582713_12590123_12480033_10214664.pdf

sorry for the long reply, but I thought it interesting. swap a cam and delet DOD and it should be the same damn thing.

I have all that info and it is what I used to make my final decision. I have never been much on guessing or experimenting on Daily driver projects. Pick a combo that is proven, kick it up a notch(ported intake, T-body and some ARH 1 7/8 long tubes) and you have an awesome street car that is a sleeper if the right muffs are used. I cant wait! Good to see you again Cliffy!

Since we're talking flywheel horsepower today here's a chart from desktop dyno.
*Note heads milled for 10.9 comp
Red line is a baby 220/220 .581/.581 on 112
Yellow is a 224/230 .581/.590 on 112
(You'd prolly use a 114 on an auto)

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/PerthPurplePenguin/car%20parts/L76/dyno_run109-1000.jpg

Predictions aren't far off as an 06 GTO with the 224/230 on 114 but with stock L92 heads (10.4 comp) put down 450rwhp.

I read where a Chevelle ran 12.2 with that crate motor and I said thats what I am doing. Close to the same weight, I think the G8 is a wee bit more aero friendly too!

Cliffy
08-26-2008, 06:08 PM
Good to be back Charlie... Low 12's in a full weight, all the creature comforts, street car rocks :rocking: through a baby seat in the back seat, and now you have bitchin' ride

GRRRR8
08-26-2008, 06:12 PM
Yes low 12s consistently. I am only looking for 1 11sec pass!

Cliffy
08-26-2008, 06:18 PM
low 12's with at least one high 11 means consistant high 11's are not far off.

There is another article that you might be interested in also. I am not sure if I can post info here or not as they are not a sponsor. Resulting in around 545hp and 485 lb ft with a cam, headers, and a good tune.

Thanx. Again looking at this from a stand point of "an LS2 with with L92 heads = L76 (with exception to valvetrain and dod)" Livernois Motorsports,
about 30min north of me, using a stage two cam ( streetable 232/236 @.050 .600 lift 114 LSA )and L92 heads...
1st article...
