Anyone know if there are any interchangeable alternators for the 09 g8 gt? I live in Canada and the closest alternator is in Tennessee and I kind of need my car

Or another alternator that uses the same 2 wire voltage regulator

I think you can use the PPV alternator, just do a search on here. I wouldn't bother with any aftermarket alternators. I think the GXP fits too

You have to use a Delco alternator made for the G8, GT or GXP, or the Caprice PPV. People who have tried a non Delco unit still throw warnings.

What CP said^^^. I bought that exact alternator from Amazon for my GT this past spring and it was $220. I would jump on that.

Have you inquired with any rebuilders in your area? May have to send them your case for a few hours if they do not have one in stock.

Oh, very low price here found for the GXP alternator (solid pulley):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/251939746025?item=251939746025&lgeo=1&vectorid=229466&rmvSB=true

At that price might be worth getting one and switching out your decoupler pulley onto the new one. Or even getting a new decoupler pulley as they are only about $50.00. Have a new alternator for 130.00. Special tool required to remove and install the pulley but most all alternator re builders would have it.

Thanks for the link Paul

Do you think it will be a problem running the alternator without the decoupled pulley on an auto GT?

You're welcome Greg.
It feels weird having to shop outside of "the network" to get decent prices doesn't it.

Gates (main manufacture of them) states tensioners and pulleys are tuned to be used with decoupler pulleys. But just looked and the tensioners are the same from 6.0 to 6.2 so I think it will be fine in that regard. You will just loose the benefits of the decoupler pulley witch is decreased noise and belt wear. Think many folks have run them without an issue.

Yea it does Paul. Can't remember the last time I purchased a new GM part some someplace other than work. Amazon had my price beat by over $50.00

Yes thanks Paul! There are none to be had in these parts so I ordered one for a spare.

A fuel consumption issue, yes. Besides having no freewheeling run-on, it buggers up predictable operation of AFM. Still works, just not nearly as energy efficient without DCP.

Thanks Paul. Mine just died. This is a great price and with Prime, next day delivery was only $10 more.

I realize this thread is a bit old. But I'm reading GXP, GT, decouplers, etc.

Can someone explain the decoupler? Is it a clutch similar to an A/C compressor?

And also, mine being a late 2009.5 model, is there a difference? Do I need to order a GXP model?

How about a PPV?

Sorry for all the questions, trying to get all my parts together so I can do this if it fails or when I do my cam swap.

Thanks!

Autotmatic cars have the decoupler, and the manual GXP's do not.
The decoupler is a one way clutch built into the pulley.

Cool! Thanks Greg.

So all 2008, 2009, and 2009.5 GTs came with the same alternator? Or is there still a difference? How about the PPV?

Yes, you are correct about the GT alternators.
The PPV alt is the same as the GT one only it puts out more amps (170a vs the G8 100a)

As I understand it - ALL Automatic equipped V8 Cars came with the same Alternator. (GT or GXP) and the PPV is the same basic design and will replace, but is not the same part number and I believe puts out extra amps.

I thought I was going to replace mine back in November - turns out I didn't. but I was about to buy one from rockauto that was marked as 08-09 G8 GT, GXP alternator. and yes Delco brand.

The auto GXP's got the standard alternator not the one with the decoupler. The decoupler has more to do with AFM than the transmission.

OH - good point. is the decoupler something that you can move from one part to the next.

also didn't someone say they used a truck alternator with success?

Greg@PacePerformance

The decoupler is part of the pulley and I haven't tried to move it from one to another so I don't know on that part.

I don't know how a truck alt would mount since they should have totally different mounting tabs. The CTS-V is similar and the Chevy SS is very similar, but still different.

The decoupler allows the alternator to freewheel when you let off the gas and slow down on it's own, it reduces the shock on the belt as a result.
