View Full Version : One wheel burnout with 3.27 diff

Got conformation yesterday at the track that I am only getting one wheel spin during a burnout. What would you do if you were in my shoes? Get a new diff, put a true trac in or just get a shop to rebuild it and maybe beef it up some?
I don't go to the track but 1-2 times a year and normal driving seems fine. Not afraid of pulling it since I did it once already. Just don't know about breaking into it and messing around. Never done that kind of stuff before. Would not mind doing it but know that there are some close tolerances and that's nothing to play around with.

I got the 3.45 same boat.
Full spool because I don't care and its cheap.
Quality limited diffs are stupid expensive.
You can try other fluid tho. More limited diff friendly.
Dyno and additive and change it every 15k or so.
I'm doing brad Penn lube once the spool is done. Might try it with additive before.

When I picked up my 3.45, I popped the diff out and added a jre diff clutch kit (extra disks and different spring). Since you are not removing the pinion, it all goes right back together as the changes are inside the diff itself. I did fab a "diff spreader" (http://forum.grrrr8.net/showthread.php?t=14219), but hears folks get them out with brute force. It's not a hard job, just follow the instructions. My diff is working fine, dual tire smoke.
I'm sure greg could get replacement disks for the existing worn, then add the jre and be done.

What do you mean by "full spool"?

Good info, might be something to look into unless I figure out what a "full spool" is.

Only thing is I sure hope they get cheaper. Ford 9" spools are like $300

Spool may be cheap but those 35 spline axles you need to plug in will set you a back about 4 truetracs or 8 JRE posi mods.

I looked for a stock replacement spool but no luck.
It sucks they made that 35 spline so you have to get axles.
There's not even mini spools yes.

CORRECTION, I broke an axle, not the diff.
Truetracs aren't invincible.
I broke a truetrac with 486RWHP on 4000RPM launch in a 6-speed G8 on Bias Plys.

Well, to be fair with enough traction you can break just about anything... :)

I'd drain fluid and run ZL1 LS gear oil. Already has the limited slip additive and works much better than the GM fluid pus the additive.

I'm thinking of going this route first. The least expensive and can't hurt to try first.

Oops, when mechanic checked things out more thoroughly, turns out it was an axle, and not the diff that broke.

What! Like totally snapped?
That means your diff is working well to get around one legged.

Do you know the part number to ensure that we get the right stuff?

I second that request. ZL1 LS Gear oil doesn't come with a part number in a simple Google search!!

You were able to drive the car? When a G8 axle breaks, it snaps off the end at the c clip. Normally, the wheel and tire would try to separate from the diff.

Yep, Eddie is right. My dealership quoted me $26 per bottle. Get with Greg at pace, he quoted me $15.64 plus $12 for shipping. Looks like 3 qts are needed.

Camaro diff is 1.7 quarts I do believe.
Witch is funny because It started dripping out when I started the second. After a quick test drive I opened it back up and was still spilling. Level ground and everything.

Well that's good to know. Only need TWO qts then. :brock:

just gonna leave this here ...
In 2014 a man in Perth, Western Australia plead guilty to charges of dangerous driving causing death after fitting a mini-spool to his V8 Holden Commodore car, crashing into a tree and killing his son.[5]

So don't drive in Australia?
This is Merca! People get away with robbery In this country. And go to jail for doing the right thing.
I'm sure there's plenty of cases when someone didn't get sued or arrested but that's not good news to write.
Also in that case you could get sued or arrested in a bone stock car.
It's all a dice roll.
