Does anyone think that are cars are going to be collectables in the future? I'm asking this because a lot of us are modding these cars but if we keep doing this I think it would hurt the value of them. I'm torn a little cause my IOM is one of possibly 900 or less in this color and I don't want to ruin it by doing a mod that couldnt be reversed, i.e. thought of painting the hood black. Your thoughts?

Do you want to enjoy the car or hope it becomes worth something? Its a dice roll. I prefer to enjoy it for what it is....a shit and get 4dr grocery getter I highly doubt we'll ever reach a collectible status.

buy one to mod and one to store, best of both worlds! :)

Or... buy 2 and mod em' both!

They will be collectables, after we are all planted!

Was my 1965 GTO a collectable? Then - NO.

Now - Maybe, but I sold it for $400 in 1974.

No way to know.

The 888's, also maybe, as value is determined by availability, condition, relative rarity, etc.

Right now my 888 is not collectable. Never will be, or the hulk might be worth more than it was new in 35 years. :p

I guess the real question here is will market forces cause the value to remain high for longer than most cars, like the 94-96 Impala SS. It remains to be seen, as GTO values are still dropping. I would look to the 2004 GTO for inspiration when asking this question.

Yes!! Most of the dealers around here seem to be collecting them and storing them on their lots!

The 08s have already dropped in value by almost 1/2. As for the 888's...If that was all they made for the year it would help, but they weren't. It's no like the plaque in the car was hand autographed by Carroll Shelby. I guarantee an 888 won't be worth any more than my car, a hundred vin spots down the assembly line.

It's really hard to say. Some cars never caught on while they were made or even years after they were made. But some seem to dip and then will take off. I used to own a Trans Am GTA and values on them dropped while they were built and even for a few years after they stopped building them. Mine had 145k on it and I was lucky to get $3500 for it. Then, the collectors started buying them. The low mileage cars (below 100k) are going for a decent amount depending on mileage and condition of the car. Even the higher mileage cars in good condition are bringing a decent amount. I think one similar to mine recently sold for $5000 on ebay.

I think depending on many years the G8 is made and where cars go in the next 5-10 years will go along way to determining if these cars will ever be collector's items.

I am going to mod the car but I probably wont paint the hood. I just liked the style of the G8 at the Chicago auto show with the flat black hood. I do think these cars in about 25 - 35 years from now will be collectables though due to the low volume of production for 2008.
