View Full Version : Frustration with Cts v wheels

So purchased a staggered setup 19x9 and 19 x9.5. Took the car in to have the wheels swapped out. They call me and say wheels wont fit. Go there after work and sure enough they dont fit over the hub. Got up this am pulled the right front, lightly sand the hub and slide the wheel on. Tight, but I get it started then go to tighten the wheel down a bit. As I am doing so the wheel stops turning because it is hitting the strut! Seriously??? Yes it was a 9" wheel I had installed. This is the stock suspension, no changes and unlowered. Do I need spacers for OEM CTS V wheels on a G8 GT (2008)?
Will I need spacers for the rears?

Take it these are the sedan CTS-Vs? It really comes down to tire selection/width if they need a spacer on the front or not. I'm running a 3mm spacer on the front along with Hankook Ventus v12 in a 255 width. Some people have run with Ventus v12 in a 245 without a spacer and no rubbing. The rears I'm running the v12 in a 285 with no issues or spacer needed. Don't have info for other tires, as I've only run the v12s.
The hub is a tight fit, had to sand the surface lightly on all four corners for them to slide on.

Thanks for your response. Common sense tells me I will need a spacer up front but wanted to get some feedback.

Even with the 3mm spacer, at full suspension drop there is a light rub on mine, as in just barely touching, nothing to be concerned about. The stock studs will work with up to a 5mm spacer on the front with the CTS-Vs, if you're going by the thread engagement requirements. If I was redoing the spacer, I'd go for a 4mm which would remove all chance of rubbing.

What tire brand and size are on the fronts? I'm running stock take offs from a CTS-V sedan with factory Michelins without rubbing or need for a spacer.

I will be swapping over what I already have Michelin pilot SMS 245/40/19's. I might do the 4 or 5 mm spacer. I want zero issues

I was just curious what is on them now that is not working? I take it that the Michelin's are not on them now?

I had to go with a 5mm spacer on mine but I am pretty low. No rubbing issues at all anymore though.

When just the wheel is mounted it rubs the strut to the point the wheel will not turn.

OK, didn't realize it was a bare rim. That's really weird. I thought there was a tire on the rim and it was rubbing the strut.

Mine rubs when the car is up on the jack, and suspension is fully extended, but it does not rub when on the ground. Regardless, I threw on some spacers just to be safe.

Very odd Steve.
Check the wheel and make sure it is the correct one for the front.
The info in etched inside the wheel. GM may have boxed a front wheel incorrectly.
Edit
9" in front 51mm OS
9.5" in rear 56mm OS

It sounds like what I watched happen in person above at Belle Tire here once.
They put a rear 9.5" or 10" coupe up front and it hits. The tech didn't realize they were different, he assumed the spoke design "depth" indicated fitment.
If you look at V wheels, the front & rear on a sedan and wagon seem backwards but they aren't ;)
The wheels are stamped inside the barrell with the sizing information.

Good point.
Added size info to my post

Thanks all, they initially were trying to put the 9.5 on the front but I had them pull that and pull the right one on. I cleaned up around the hub a bit lightly with a dremel and all is good with sliding on.

Yup, just a lot of rust on the hub. G8 and CTS-V (Gen 2) have the same hub bore diameter I believe. So everything should just pop on. 3mm spacers for front if you have clearance issues with the suspension up there.
Otherwise they're nice wheels. Fully forged, and good widths to support more tire for the G8.

I have 285 PS2's on my 19x9 in the front with stock lugs and a 5/16 (3/8?) spacer from o'reily's no rub although it did hit the strut w/o the spacer22966

Thanks for your experience. Your hometown hasn't changed much I am sure, but its a nice quiet place.
