View Full Version : WHY!?!?!?! Peeling paint!

I found a chunk of paint missing from the trailing end of the rear driver side wheel well yesterday. The edges around it feel like they could peel up pretty easy. There's no damage to the metal, so I don't know if something hit it. But I figure it's most likely that the paint cracked on the edge of the fender lip and a bubble had worked its way out.

Any ideas on a decent DIY fix, or how much a shop might charge to fix it? It's a fairly inconspicuous spot, so touch up paint might mask it OK, but I'm afraid of more peeling.

Dang that sucks.. I would imagine it be a $2-300 job at a reputable shop.

I'm going to say between $400 - 500 for them to repaint the panel.

Paint pricing is NUTS! That could have been a simple rock chip that got salt and water under it, or the bumper may be rubbing a hole in the paint where you can't see it.

That's definately worthy of a DIY attempt first...

I remember the first 08 models, people were taking them to the carwash and blowing the paint off with the high pressure wands. The paint on these cars are thin.

Before the pressure wash...Perfect wheel center caps
After the pressure wash..... No red left in any of them.

Rolled fenders?

Are you asking if I have, or suggesting that I do? I have not rolled them and don't have a need to.

Looks to me it was a rock chip and your DOT put down enough salt to eat through the primer. It's going to need to be sanded past the area of corrosion and primered and painted. I think you can get a rattle can made with your particular paint. I'd would try that first. Get that salt off the car.

That not to bad. If you seen my truck you would need to change your undies.
O6 GMC white. Every panel has it coming off. Every damn one. And its factory paint.
Gm will not do one damn thing to help out.
Quote was $6-7k to fix it. Line-x was $2500 to do the entire truck. I don't need to worry about Colorado hail once its done.

You can have decent result with touching up the chip.

Start by cleaning the chip out. And then you will want to use a good primer like epoxy or something with zinc in it.

Apply the primer but keep it in the hole, just enough to seal the bare metal.

Let it dry for at least 10 minutes.

Take color matched paint and apply over the primer, might take a few coats to build up a little and cover the primer.

Once you have a decent build of color, I like to mix the color in with some activated clear coat or you can just use activated clear with out the color.

Apply a few coats with enough flash time in between, you want it just above the surface around the chip.

Let that cure and then you can sand and polish if you want it to blend in a little better.

I have had great results with this but it will take up to a few hours to do it right if you don't have a paint booth.

Automotivetouchup.com (http://www.automotivetouchup.com/) has excellent touch up products. I touched up spots under my hood where the hood liner was rubbing the paint and formed rust spots to form. Used their products and it came out beautiful!

Here's my plan.

Clean it with this.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011YY5EQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A38OW3L74PJVTS

There really isn't any rust, but I'll start with a brush coat of this to hopefully create a good solid base.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002P4KM2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A38OW3L74PJVTS

That stuff is more or less intended to be a one coat deal, so I'll prime on top of it so help the final color.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZ2C8DI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AT3WCDWISQTZB

Then mask around the area and put down a couple color spray coats.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HZ2GX98/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AT3WCDWISQTZB

Remove the masking and treat the edges as necessary with the color pen that comes with the primer stick above.

Then clear with either the stick or can included above.

Thoughts? How long should I wait between different coats?

Paint pens blow chunks! Use a good etching primer, then spray with a color coat and then clear it. Check out Eastwood for options as well. They have some great products.

I purchased a small rattle can from the dealer for my Heron White and it matched perfect. Came out great you cannot even notice.

A good wash ..Prep with a good primer was the most important thing to do.

to keep consistent with the other thread..

Must be something with the SRM/Passion Red.

Noticed a small line of salt this morning on the rear quarter.

Found this; both sides..

I know someone who had this happen to their Chevy. They were at the dealer for something else and the service manager told them that GM had gotten a bad batch of paint from a supplier and if he was willing to leave the car there for a couple of weeks, they would repaint his car for free (essentially at the paint shops leisure) and no loaner car. So he left his car there and a couple of weeks later he got his car back with a great new paint job, for free (he had another car at home to drive so the no loaner car wasn't a problem). This was at least 15 years ago.

Getting back to your problem. The grey stuff you are seeing is primer, and as long as the primer is intact, I would also clean it, then lightly hand sand it with some fine sandpaper and paint over it. I don't think you need to do anything else special with the new paint to make it stick good. I suspect that your car was painted with some defective paint.

As a painter of 11 years at a GM dealer, I can say with complete confidence that this is terrible advice and should not be followed, the primer is what's lifting off when the corrosion starts. While it can be cleaned of super easy (as seen in my pics) the correct sanding/priming/painting practices must be followed for a lasting repair. As it is my temp touch up repair is ALREADY peeling off and forcing the issue of a repaint faster than I'd hoped.

That was when GM used Sherwin Williams "Durapeel" paint and they repainted countless cars because of it.

my appointment is booked for Monday, not going to touch it between now and then, just really praying that they do a good job and that it lasts. Would be a huge piss off to pay a grand to have this fixed and only come back, I might as well do it myself every few years. There is NO surface rust right now, it is clean (salt covered for now) galv sheet metal.

Hoping for a good colour match and a nice blend. Will have my LED flashlight to go over it once complete.

On a side note, once fresh paint is on, how long until;
1-i can do a regular 2 bucket wash?
2-can I apply sealant or wax?
3-I can to a strip wash, decontamination, clay and polish?

Is there a minimum cure time?

You can do anything but seal the paint! You'll want to keep it clean of contamination, because fresh paint can be a bit more susceptible to etching and such damage.

Wait 3 months before polishing or sealing.

Ok, so i'll wait that long before putting some 3M paint protecting film on as well.

Wax is good though?

NO! 3 months for anything covering the paint. You have to let the paint off gas or else it'll pop and fail. No sealing or covering of ANY kind.

Just keep the bird poop and bugs off of it. A product like Adams Waterless Wash or rinseless wash diluted into a spray bottle is OK as it doesn't have any wax in it. Adams Detail Spray has wax boosters in it and isn't recommended.
