View Full Version : Kensun HID 6000k lights

So i bought the KENSUN 6000k HID kit and i like them except for the fact that when I turn the car on sometimes one or neither of the headlights will turn on.. not a big deal cause all i have to do is turn them on manually using the headlight switch but still annoying none the less.. Anyone else having this issue with there HID lights?

Yes you need to run a delay relay.
That should fix the problem. I haven't installed mine yet. Right now I just turn the parking lights on then once the car is started move the switch to auto.

no I don't.

I leave mine on auto and let em light or not whenver. I also don't have a seperated power relay and direct wire to battery or alternator like others do.

The kit I have came from XenonDepot (KBcarstuff or something like that now) - it is a philips/sylvania HID kit. had a digital controlled ballast and igniter combo that accepts a 9-16 volt range. The bulbs are color matched etc I think I paid about 150 for the kit.

They've worked great now for just over 2 years - relay less - light switch on auto - DRL relay and fuse pulled.

I have the same problem, thinking about installing a delay relay as Greg said. Anyone know where I can find some pre-made? Thanks

aside from running a delay relay - did you run or did you kit come with a power relay.

IE - a block (hopefully sealed) that has leads to run direct to your battery circuit - and another set of leads with a Headlight bulb connector on it.

you plug the stock headlamp harness into this relay block first - then the block to the HID ballast - with another connection to be made to the battery - or if you wish on the G8 - the + power tap for jumpstarting the car (those wires are direct to the battery line and direct to the alternator) and then running negative to a decent ground.

the purpose - this relay will close with the headlamps coming it - then contact - making your HID's power directly off the battery/alternator line.

If you need one and want something more kit like - xenondepot has those too - the pigtail is for their kit - but the wires are simple + and - so it's easily adapted to other kits. their relay is solid state and sealed for dirty/wet environments - like under the hood.

also - sorry but I have to post this.

the engineer in me can't call it a delay relay - that term refers to a relay that has a timed setting on it - these do not. it causes a slight delay in lighting the HID's but that's not their exact purpose.

there is a realy that will have a 5-10-15 millisecond or longer delay - that is a different animal.

OP, what you are looking for is a delay or timer that will keep the HID from attempting to fire while the motor is in it's start cycle.

Several are available including two Time delay relays (Wolstentech (http://www.wolstentech.com/products/timedelayrelay/basic-instructions.php) and retrosolutions (http://retro-solutions.net/product-info.php?HID_Time_Delay_Relay-pid602.html)) Wolstentech has adjustable time delay for power on and power off, retro solution is fixed at 10 seconds.

Depending on your skills, you have couple of option to get the HIDs firing every time provided the Ballast/bulbs are good working order.

Option 1:
Make your own relay harness. You can use decent gauge wire (12 or 14), some crimp (with GOOD crimper) connections and make it look/fit factory. In place of a standard relay, the wolstentech or retrosolutions unit would be used as they can switch 25+ amps

Option 2: order a harness from theretrofotsource (http://www.theretrofitsource.com/components/harnesses/morimoto-h11-low-beam-relay-wire-harness.html) and then order a delay timer like this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/250889308205?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649) which has adjustable delay. I recommend the link harness as unlike every other HID set I have seen (install 14+to date) this harness is 14ga wire where ebay/ddm are posers with 16 and even 18ga wiring and chitty connectors. Considering the harness job is two-fold, Increased voltage as right from battery and surge current at HID ignition (wire gauge).

IMO, option 2 is sufficient and closest to plugnplay. It will come with the proper terminations that you will have to find with option 1 - in the end, the cost will likely be close unless you have a good bone pile.

Yes, some folks have hid setup that don't need any of this. Many more work well the poser ebay/ddm harness. Your call what you want to do. But know you know some proven options.

If you decide option two here is how to insert the delay:

Nice, purchasing the time delay relay now. I already have a harness. Very odd that 90% of the time both head lights come on and it's just those few times only the left one comes on by itself. But its a pain to keep checking to make sure they are both on.
