View Full Version : 2014 Chevy SS & Pontiac G8 Black Trim around the side windows

Crazy Paul
12-10-2013, 01:19 PM
2014 Chevy SS & Pontiac G8 from factory have 6 "chrome" pieces surrounding the side windows.
The most cost effective way to change these 6 pieces to BLACK is to:

A) Buy the 2 replacement black really long curved gutter trims yourself from GM in USA. You don't want to be transporting them very far because due to their length and fragile nature the shipping is expensive and transit damage is common.
GM Part Numbers : 92294363 (left, black) 92294362 (right, black)
EDIT, JULY 10th 2015....GM in North America have stopped stocking and selling the 2x long Black Gutter trims.

The complete boxed set of 4 straights and 2 long curved gutters all in Black are still available shipped by UPS from Australia to your door.

PLUS

B) Buy the 4 replacement black upper door straight trims from Australia.
Total shipped by Airfreight ETA 14 day is US$180
Paypal as normal "goods and services" to Paypal ID = pjsadler@iinet.net.au

4 x new black straight genuine GM straight upper door trims complete with clips.

Confirmed today.
Black gutter trim available from GM in North America to fit the 2014 Chevy SS will also fit the Pontiac G8.
The 4 straight black upper door trim strips to suit 2014 Chevy SS also fit G8, but are priced way higher in USA than in AU.

See the Yellow Arrows.
These are the 2 new long black curved gutter pieces you buy yourself from GM in North America.

Got prices for the black gutter trim from my local GM dealer yesterday..$125.00 each. CP has them cheaper but..the cost to pack and ship them is another story. He said get them from your nearby dealer. I have my trim in primer and going to coat today (2nd time)..will see how it comes out. If I no like I will be ordering a new pair. Parts dude at Todd Wenzel said 2/3 days special order (of course).

CP,
Any clue if these new gutter trim bits are manufactured by GM? Just wondering if these are higher quality than the ones I got since initially Holden made these but eventually outsourced them to China (which was what I bought). No issues with my gutter trim other than some cosmetic mis-alignments.

I forgot to look on the labels where they were made. All the Part Numbers would have changed 2 or 3 times since you bought yours and it's hard to know which subcontractor makes anything these days. Yes the first Chinese made lot a few years back were on the sub-standard side and they hadn't perfected the pouring or molding of the rubber onto the stainless steel. The few I've seen recently definately look tidier on the inside.

US$180 total shipped for the set of 4 straight upper door trims in black from me.
GM North America currently have the black rear door strips at full retail US$82ea....the black front door strips are either not priced, not stocked, or they've fucked up the part numbers. I don't think you'll get the 2 front upper door strips in black anytime soon from GM there.

So you still suggest to purchase GM Part Numbers : 92294363 (left, black) 92294362 (right, black) from the US dealership
and the lower parts from Australia...from yourself, to complete a full all black trim for the G8s?

Do the black upper door straight pieces come with the rubber gasket/trim? Mine is severely cracked, and in some cases falling apart. This would be a good excuse to go ahead and replace the chrome trim with black trim if it does indeed come with the rubber piece attached.

You'd not be getting good value for money by ordering the 2 new long black curved gutter pieces from an Online Vendor.
[GM Part Numbers :92294363 (left, black) 92294362 (right, black)]
Look how GM North America choose to package them each in a giant box.
2 can fit in the same box and it only needs to be 2 inches thick.
If you don't mind paying shipping on 40 something cubic feet of air then good luck to you.

CP There aren't any dealers close to me up here, so I'm positive if I ordered I'd get taken to the cleaners on price... so I'm going to try my luck.

Strange enough, the place I ordered from does 8.95 handling on the order, but shipping was free... we'll see how it goes. The other guy already got his, but hasn't opened it yet... however he did say the box arrived in good shape.

Wish me luck, CP.

Arrived today and installed - came in a single non braced box measuring 91x20x3. I didn't brace the front of the rear doors trim, so when the front popped off, it swung upward and put a scratch in my BPillar. Would be wise to remove rear of the trim first, then put something under the front of that piece of trim to pivot off of, removing it by lifting up the rear until the front clip pops loose. I took some pics and will post in a bit. I think I can buff out the scratch, but where it first impacted, it went through the paint and left a 1mm dot. Bah.

All the same, thank you CP for supporting our community!

Upper Door Trim Instructions.

###You do not have to remove the mirrors, just be careful not to scratch anything.
The front door strips only have a clip at the rear, at the front they are retained by a pocket in the mirror housing.
You have to lift up an inch at the rear to dis-engage the rear clip & then walk the strip rearward to get it out from inside the mirror pocket.

Hey Paul the trim arrived the other day and everything looks great as expected. I took a moment and did just the driver side front door and everything went well except I destroyed the clip of the chrome piece trying to pull it out. Are the trim pieces still good even without the clip? Other than that it was a cinch to do. I even took some paint cleaner and quick detailer and spiffed up the area to get rid of that black line.

Glad you received your package all OK there.
No, the clips are not available to buy. Destroy a clip and you'd have to buy a new strip.
There's 6 clips all different to each other spread over the 4 straight door trims.

Are you trying to keep the chrome trim? If not, grab that sucker in the middle and pull up, it will bow (bend) and come up. Remove the rear first (force), and then put something under the front lip (between trim strip and upper door panel to pivot off of (a thin plastic panel tool works) and pop the front out. Be very wary of the amount of force you're using and be sure that if anything pops loose it will do so AWAY from the car, and not into the door or window or pillar at all.

That looks like a strong box. Without it, I doubt most shipments would reach the US without being bent. The box looks well engineered. At 7 feet long, that must put you into the "Dimensional Weight" shipping tables, I assume.

The box actually gets full value for the shipping dollar, it cubes out to 8.4 and weighs 10kg when loaded as per pic above. The final 10kg includes the lid and 50mm metal gussets on all corners top and bottom.
