Well, I guess I was the first one to pull the plug on the volant CAI kit--here is my personal thoughts & comments:

INSTALL TIME: Less than 30 minutes--the airbox assembly comes completely assembled(air filter, top cover, etc...) Then you have the pipe that goes from the airbox to the throtle body. Two silicon couplers, a hand full of clamps & a new breather hose. There is basically no instructions, just a piece of paper with an assembled and unassembled view of the parts break down---no install instructions. Although I do have to say that if you can't figure it out, you probably shouldn't be working on vehicles.

INSTALL OPINIONS: The new airbox installs over an existing stud--the fit is excellent--there is no rigging up needed. The MAF clamps to the airbox, then the intake elbow goes from the MAF to the throttle body. I am exremely impressed with the quality of the airbox & intake tube--both of them are made of a thick, high quality plastic. The intake elbow is thick enough that I would not hesitate to install a nitrous port into it  Both silicon couplers seem to be quality pieces as well as the supplied breather hose that replaces the factory unit. Hose clamps are nothing special--just standard run of the mill clamps. I did turn the washer fill cap for a little better fitment.

POWER INCREASE: I never had the car dyno'd before the install-- and wont be doing so until I get around to long tubes & ported intake/tb combo, so don't ask for any specific numbers. The car seemed to pick up some horsepower & torque--the car seems to pull a little more freely and with the Volant lid off of the airbox--seems to make a little more difference. The sound level is increased with the lid on, and with the lid off, makes for a nice loud swoosh.

POWERCORE AIR FILTER: For anyone who has ever worked on or owns a Ford 6.0L deisel, this air filter looks exactly like the ones that come on those trucks. Supposed to last 100k miles--I believe it from previous experience with this style filter. To those that havn't seen the filter, they are blue, and have a honeycomb shape to them.

OVERALL: This is a very high quality intake. The parts are well built--looks excellent when installed, and fits very nicely. Some power was added according to the butt dyno. I would say maybe 10 rwhp. I would not hesitate to purchase this system again.

COST: I paid $349.95 from MarylandSpeed.com -- right now, they are the only retailer that has this particular intake. They are the highest priced intake as far as side mount style. But again, i am very impressed with the quality.

Very nice looking indeed. But, too much heated underhood air unless the intake drops down to a GRRRRR8 lower panel mod.

I like to see my IAT at or equal to outside air temp.

Definitely the most attractive intake so far, looks like a modified stock one though. I cant make up my mind on the effectiveness. Either its just like the rotofab but closed in, so less movement to let warm air move away from it, or less heat getting in through the top and sucking cooler air from the bottom LP mod type deal, like he ^ said. hmmmm, im an accountant, why am i pondering these things right now, i got tax returns to do. gotta let people who know stuff do the posting.

Will the lower panel mod work with this intake?

If you look at the picture of it on Maryland Speed site, it looks like it will keep the hot air out. If Vararam does not get something out soon I might switch and get this.

I really like the look of this intake. Only concern I would have would be whether the snorkeling actually restricts airflow a bit. What shape is the filter? a panel filter or a cone? Can't tell from the pictures.

Look forward to someone dynoing of flow-testing this intake.

The filter is a cone type.

Works perfect with the lower panel mod--I'll try to get some pics up later. The air box has an opening that points down directly towards the ground.

Thanks for all the orders guys. Here are some details from my install.

The install was easy, and it looks and sounds great. It also added a nice little seat of the pants kick. This is really the first intake I have installed in a long time that actually makes a sucking sound under full throttle. You don't hear it normally...but get on the car and you can hear it take a big gulp.

So on to the pictures...

Here is our new G8. We bought this specifically to test parts for this car since it is rather unique. It has to be red just like our GTO:)

Now on to the unboxing...here it is-

Looks fairly well packaged-

Here is the whole kit. The filter is already assembled inside the box. The instructions are a little lacking with just an assembled diagram...but this is also a simple install. If you can't do it, you should not own tools.

This is the Volant airbox next to the stock lower half of the stock airbox. Though the scoop is not as long, it is much wider which should allow more total air in at any given time.

Most of the way installed...remember to leave everything loose untill the end.

Inside of the Volant airbox with filter removed-

The Powercore Filter...should go 100K miles without cleaning.

Doesn't this grab air from the exact same spot as the stock unit?

hey! i recommend disconnecting your battery while doing this! it lets your computer relearn the new volume of air. i must say i really noticed a difference after i let the computer reset. i mean really!

This is a nice cai but I feel like it can just I can just buy a new air filter & a smooth tube from the stock box to the t/b and it would be about the same.

Am I wrong about this?

BigRob

not to say your wrong, but after comparing the stock components to this, you can just see that is allows much more air intake. if your on the fence, just read some reviews!!
