Service manual just says first pass 11 ft-lbs, second pass 22 ft-lbs. No specified sequence.

I see where you got those figures from.
If you go into the Cooling section in 2 different places it says 18 ft-lb for the final pass.

WTF, again? I specifically checked the text AND the Fastener Tightening Specifications this time, and both say 22 ft-lbs, but I was looking in the Engine Mechanical, not the Engine Cooling section of the book.

I would go with the 18 ft lbs. I had to heli coil the thermostat housing to water pump threads.

18 ft-lbs probably would be the safer bet. There's just no consistency all across GM's line for water pump torque spec. Since I was curious, I checked the service manuals of other LS-powered vehicles (4th gen Camaro:LS1, GTO:LS2, Corvette:LS3, CTS-V:LSA), and some said 22 ft-lbs while others said 18 ft-lbs in one spot and 22 in another, like the G8 manual. I also have two books, "How to Rebuild GM LS-Series Engine" and "How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines" and one says 18 and the other 22. Of course if GM can't get it straight in their official publications, how could you expect "aftermarket" books to get it consistent.

For parts like this I just go with "snug" :)

I've done 11/22 multiple times on several cars with never an issue.
