View Full Version : What to ask for in a TCM re-tune?

I am heading over to HPE later today to get some of the TCM settings perfected. My G8 was the first they had done, so I didn't expect perfection on the first try. Anyway, I was trying to go through all the things i'm going to ask for.

1. Reduced TM about 25% or maybe 50% is that too much?
2. Slightly more line pressure to firm up the shifts.
3. Turning off the DOD.
4. Anything else I'm missing?

I already have the rev limiter and shift points where i want them.

All advice is welcomed. Thanks!

Normal 40% Sport 30% and manual 20% will make a safe big difference.

Shifts at 6300 with rev limiter at 6500 so it doesnt run into it at cooler temps.

Is that @ 40? or reduced 40%?

@40%

GRRRRR8, being a master tech and all 40,30,20 is what you would deem a safe, reliable level? Also, do you think increasing line pressure will cause any significant, adverse reactions? On a completely different topic, will steel braided brake lines cause any warranty issues for the ABS, calipers, etc.?

Is this how Vector sets their tune or?

Vector will customize your tune if you ask.

LOL, complete noob here, what do those percentages represent?

Yes they will.

;)

0/0/0 TM

Not exactly recommended, BTW.

I'm curious as to how the torque management is being adjusted on a % basis. My tuner showed me on his laptop (using HP tuners) that its just on/off, nowhere for % adjustments.

Different software.

Well that makes sense, lol.
Do you happen to know which software allows it. Thanks for the help.

Vector's software is proprietary, dunno what, if anything, it's derived from.

But aren't there others that can do it too? The OP of this thread was going to HPE, and I believe Chuck COW also adjusts TM % as well.

Yep Chuck CoW and Owen from HPE/ARD both use EFI Live.

I have the 40% normal 30% sport and 20% manual. Now I wish I would have gone 30% normal 20%sport and 10% manual.

So what exactly does Vector set theirs at if you don't specify what you want?

There is a HP Tuners beta software out that will allow you to adjust TM%.

Have your tuner email HPTuners and ask for it - they will put a temp link on the web page for download.

This is a good question to discuss. What should one ask for in a "Tune"? I just talked to Vector and they push hard to get you to rent the stuff and do it in your home. I thought about just going to their shop and have them do the re-tune and take some time to get away from work for awhile.

What does their basic "Off the Shelf" tune do for you? Should a person be more knowledgable and ask for something different? Those of you that have had the Vector tune completed, what would you do different and WHY?

They offer a "Stealth" tune for $20.00 or the Flash Express for $250.00, which would be best? If you had to do it again, what would you do different?

With the updated tune, is your daily driving affected? I want to keep the car where it would do well daily, but have better performance and sharper/firmer shifts. I plan on the Vararam install and would like to know how the two work together. Please provide input, if you can.

Both of these are upgrades to their tune. If you add these options, they are an additional cost on top of that of the tune itself.

The Stealth option has some discussion here:
http://www.forum.grrrr8.net/showthread.php?t=4995

You mentioned Flash Express, which is the software and cable that they rent out to upload and download files to / from your car's ECM and TCM. I think what you really meant was the Power Flash cable, where you are buying the cable outright in lieu of renting it. This is discussed here:

Vector has developed a tune to accommodate the Vararam and is discussed here:

The answers to your questions are here, but might take a little "SEARCH"ing.

I believe that you are right, I had a lady, from Vector, on the phone this morning and she stated that the purchase of the "Power Flaash cable and program would allow one to reset to the factory tune and allow for a visit to the GM garage. She stated that the Stealth would not be necessary if one purchased this option, since oyu could basically erase their tune from the ECM.

I am working on a trip to their facility for the setup, so that I don't have to do the shipping dance of Death to get their system back to them in 48 hours. I can do the drive in a reasonalbly short time and see the shop for what it's worth.

Thanks :) I had most of that stuff sorted out in my subscribed threads folders (one of which is tuning). Keeps me from having to go back and look for it. A very handy forum tool (almost as handy as Search!!).

So if i was to get a tune from Vector, would 40% 20% 10% be to much, or would it be just right?
