Well a "mini" debate was started on a thread, so G8 Ray recommended a new thread on it so here it is! What does everyone on here consider to be a bolt on?

As for myself I consider bolt-ons to be anything that doesn't involve going into the motor, i.e. CAI, U/D pulley, headers, exhaust, throttle body. Intake is pushing it so that can easily go both ways.

Using the very popular 5.0L Ford Mustang as an exmple, anything that did not involve pulling the motor was bolt ons. Heads/cam/intakes. I would say if you wanted to be picky, yes anything is a bolt on. However, our intake is way easier to change(no coolant draining). I think that bolt ons are whatever you want them to be. Must people that complain about what a bolt on is/isnt, just got beat by somebody with more bolt ons! :nah:

it's called a bolt ON, not a bolt IN

Anything not splashed by oil.

I consider anything that bolts to the outside of the engine a bolt on. However FI would not fall into this catagory. But that's just me. :)

Agreed!

Even "official" sources vary. I have seen the term "stock short block" in GM High Performance" mag used to describe a specially prepared racing block with forged internals. When pushed about it, the response was that it was a block supplied by GM, therefore - stock.
I have also held the opinion that bolt ons do not require opening the engine, but also consider rockers bolt-ons...does that make me a hypocrite?

I consider a bolt-on anything that does not disturb the short block, heads, or intake.

so, by this definition, a CAI or headers or UDP would be a bolt-on, while a nitrous kit or supercharger would not be.

This is how I would define it.

+1 or 2

As soon as you start cracking into an area that effect engine fluids. Heads, Fuel Injecttion, cams, cranks, etc....it is no longer a bolt on.

Kinda like steroids, as soon as you start injections / ingesting....now it becomes serious enhancers. And it is a different game. :woohoo::boxing::boxing::boxing:

IMO bolt ons consist of anything that bolts to the motor without going internal--IE no cams/heads/cranks/eetc...

I think the following are bolt ons-
intake manifolds(upper & lower)
headers/exhaust
super/turbo charger
N20
pullies
CAI
TB

Anything that does not require the dis assembly of the motor. If you have to take off valve covers, front covers, oil pan or heads, then it is not a bolt on.

Gears, converter, headers, ported intakes and TBs, CAIs and tunes are bolt ons.

ETA:
I don't consider power-adders to be bolt ons, no FI or NO2.
