I'm looking at getting one and wondering if you have to permanently mount it like they say, and where does it go, windshield? Thanks

I have mine behind the rear view mirror on the windshield. It has double sided tape on it when you get it.

I can't speak for Texas, but I assume it's similar to the Fast Lane passes we have here in Massachusetts. Ours come with that industrial strength velcro stuff and are supposed to be stuck on the windshield behind the mirror. I don't like the aesthetic appearance of it on the windshield, and I don't drive on the toll roads nearly enough to justify leaving it up all the time, so I wanted a way that it could be easily removed and stashed in the glovebox with no evidence left behind on the windshield. So what I did was take an extra Garmin suction cup mount that I had laying around, chopped the ball-mount pedestal off it, epoxy an L-shaped sheet metal bracket to it, and then after some black paint to blend it all together I attached the pass with double-sided tape.

Now I just stick it up before a trip where I know I'll be needing it.

^^^The Texas ones aren't like that, Len. It's just a sticker with some type of microtransmitter stuck to it. Like Charlie said, I just have mine stuck behind the rearview mirror. They're not that hard to take off if you ever decide to, but doing so will probably destroy the transmitter. It's not a convenient on/off thing like the one Len pictured.

Well then never mind then. :) See what happens when you assume. Our Fast Lane is the same as the rest of the northeast's E-ZPass so I just figured it was the same down there.

Our old ones were the white box style, but the new ones are a sticker with a chip. I have mine in my truck so I dont care, but if I had to put it in the G8 I think I would get a piece of Lexan and stick it on that and then do it like Len did.

The problem I have with the tags here in Texas is that they are tied to the vehicle license plate. Even if you could get the tag off the windshield intact or attached in some temporary fashion, you cannot swap them to a vehicle with a different plate. You have buy a new tag when you get a new vehicle or replace your windshield or they make you get a new plate. Tags are $15 apiece, in addition to the tolls.

I need to replace my truck windshield but I don't want to pay for the replacement registration sticker, inspection sticker and new toll road pass.

Is the $15 charge just if you have to replace a damaged one? I just got a new pass for a car we just bought, and they didn't charge me for the actual pass. I did walk-in though, so perhaps that changes things.

If you do need to take a tollway, they'll just mail you a bill. All the toll tag does is get you a small discount. We don't actually have toll booths anymore.

We get charged for the new pass period. There is no situation where you can get a new pass without paying the $15.
Some windshield guys claim they can remove a pass without damaging it. If they do, then you can attach to the same vehicle when you have the windshield replaced. Otherwise, you gotta buy a new tag.

I slid mine behind the rear view mirror and it worked fine. I never used the adhesive and just put it in the console when not using it. On my C5 I put it behind some wires on the rear view mirror. It has never fallen down and has worked every time. There is no need to use the adhesive. That just makes it permanent and makes them more money if you have to replace your windshield or change vehicles.

To clarify, I'm using the TxTAG toll tag. I just went back and looked, and they did not charge me a fee for the new tag. From the FAQ portion of their website:

When will TxDOT start charging a tag fee?
Customers who open a new account, or request a replacement tag for an existing TxTag account, and do not enroll AutoPay will be charged $13.85 for a TxTag sticker starting March 19, 2012. Customers that purchase a tag for a new account, or an existing account, and enroll in Autopay will not be charged a tag fee. The tag fee will not be applied retroactively, so customers who already have a tag will not be charged a fee unless they are not enrolled in AutoPay and purchase a new or replacement tag.

I am enrolled in AutoPay, so that's apparently why they didn't charge me. I have no idea how the Dallas TollTag or Houston EZ TAG passes work.

I've been through 5 or 6 tags here in Austin and never been charged. Like Disciple said, you have to be enrolled in autopay to get them for free.

I had a rental car last time and the rental car place hit my credit card, but it was a third party that collects it and they had a same fee also. The discount for having autopay is 20%.
