Thought I would post up here and show you what Steve and I have been up to after many late nights (on different sides of the world) with the Holden IQ radio units. They are becoming a very popular retro fit into the older VE/G8s as they have the touchscreen functionality, better screen, USB, BT etc etc. We wanted to go a little further though and make a custom background, skin it and also make a custom animated startup logo. So far we have got this far :)

We still have a fair bit to do but its coming along nicely!

Would this fit in a g8?

Jezzab

Yup. They come in 2 flavours. Square vents or round. G8s are just series 1 VEs for us. You put the unit in and change a few plastics ;)

Will the bluetooth end up using the mirrors onstar mic or is a separate one needed?

The two major things keeping me from doing this mod are the lack of a navigation option in the US and the fact that I would want Pontiac instead of Holden screens, which I assume the stock iQ would come with. This seems to be an answer to at least one of those issues.

Nice to see a finished product :)
I've heard rumors of this from Steve. Congrats. Now back to the other project! :uhm:

We can't get these IQ radios here, but the trim from the Caprice is available :D

If this came to america with a reasonable price - I'd be all over it.

We should ask Paul ? what the coast of the radio

The radio new would be about 1K I would guess

Sucks the PPV radio wouldn't work. They are not priced bad. $690.00 of course you would need about $500.00 in trim parts and custom radio programming.

I have a feeling if Chris White would get his hands on one of of thoes units he would get the navigation working

You'd need US maps, which none of the VE vehicles have to my knowledge.

Maps are stored on an SD card and they are in a very well known format. Wouldnt be hard for anyone

I prefer the red shown on the OEM holden screen. I would like a Pontiac logo if I go this route.

Won't the SS have the same basic hardware?

That might be a port over option

Greg@PacePerformance

I would guess the new SS is going to use the Global A architecture and might not be able to be ported into the G8

Also, The IQ will fit with a few basic trim pieces swapped out, since it really only changes the center console/radio unit.

The SS (or VF) has a completely different dash where it would be quite an undertaking..

Ive got to say, Steve and Jezzab have done some brilliant work on this.
I personally thought that this was going to be mission impossible to get this working, but their hard work and perseverance definitely has paid off !

Just to help Steve and Jezzab answer some of the questions raised,

The trim pieces for the IQ unit is not too expensive (in Australia at least).
For the G8, you will need to change (as a minimum)
1) Upper HVAC vents (Either square or round, depending on preference) (Not sure of price)
2) HVAC Duct Behind the vents. (Around $8 AU)
3) The Lower Radio Surround. (They come in black (HSV), dark grey (Which would best match the G8), and some other colours. (around $30Au)
4) The IQ Mounting Cage (Not sure of price),
5) The lower radio bracket which holds the cage, IQ unit, etc (Not sure of Price).

If you do this, then you may want to go a step further, and change the transmission shift surround.
(Very similar to if you wanted to fit the HSV Triple Gauges, the transmission surround curves upward on Series II Models).

-------

For Sat Nav, the IQ system uses Navteq Sat Nav.
Analysing the files on the Sat Nav, they are very similar to what is used on some of the Euro models (BMW, Opel, and to a lesser extent, VAG and Mercedes).
Comparing the BMW V16 AU Maps (Unknown if Professional or High Version) and the IQ AU Map files, the files are very very similar....

Here is a link to the above BMW V16 Map file directory (Not actual files, just a list of files in the Map directory).
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=806538&page=3

Some other things to note about IQ Sat Nav,
1) If you want to get the most out of the IQ Sat Nav, you will need to upgrade your instrument cluster. (The newer clusters support more SW 29Bit packets such as school zones, speed / red light cameras, and overspeed warning).
2) I have no idea if TMC will work or not in the USA (Traffic Management). Since Sat Nav, and TMC are not features of the Chevrolet PPV, and the radio frequencies are different between Oz and the US, I is difficult to say if TMC will work, or is capable of working.
3) There is TMC data on the IQs Sat Nav SD Card. This I assume is information on how to interpret the TMC data from the FM radio signal. (I.E. there are IDs for different traffic events, ways to filter these events, and lots of other undocumented stuff).

I hope this helps anyone considering going down the IQ route.
It is definitely a worthwhile upgrade :)

Cheers
Matti (ZerOne)

We're certainly hoping so. Just have to wait for the Chev SS/Holden VF to be available and we can get our hands on a radio
