My daughter's 2007 Torrent has the original 7-year AC-Delco battery in it. I'm probably close to having to replace mine in the G8. Are ACDelco's batteries that good or is she just lucky? I may go with an AC Delco.

Don't forget, the batteries dying ~3 yrs in our G8s are AC-Delcos (made in Italy). But I use to regularly get 5+ yrs out of the AC-Delcos too. Something has changed in the battery industry as the batteries in my 2008 Nissan and 2009 G8 both died around the 3 yr mark.
Also, dilaogue on the boards say that Optimas (which use to be highly rated) are crap now.

Side bar: I need two deep-cycle trolling motor batteries for my boat, so last week I see this battery ad in a mag advertising Lithium Ion replacements and touting their extreme benefits. Went to their website. 100Ahr: $1,299 EACH!!! You guys around Houston should check with NASA. They sell their used batteries after only a few uses, and they have all types and sizes for sale. Their batteries are WAY over-engineered, and some of the bass tournament fishermen from around there told me they hold an extreme charge and that they will last damn near forever.

Autozone sells two that fit our cars. One is a standard lead acid and the more expensive one is agm. The agm cost me $208 out the door. The wet cell is $20 less. The agm is 3 year free replacement, the wet cell is 5 year prorated. The original batteries are agm. I wouldn't want a wet cell where our batteries are installed.

Thank you for explaining. I agree agm is the way to go. I was looking online for different batteries just did not know anything about the Duralast. I thought it was A low grade battery. Guess not.

My battery lasted almost exactly 4 years. I came home from a trip and it was stone dead at the airport. Pep Boys was the only option for me at the time. They sold and installed the battery for $149.00 +tax. If you ask at the counter, they offer 20% new customer coupons. The battery has a 5 year replacement warrantee.

I ended up getting the Optima Yellow top for around $160 at Advance Auto using a $50 off online coupon special they were running. It was about $20 cheaper than the Autozone middle grade battery so I figured it was a win-win. Personally I've had great luck with Optima batteries. I guess time will tell with this one though.

It's not and I think I paid just over 100 for it. I like that they're made here in the USA and have a great warranty. It was cheaper than the Duralast and offered the best CCA I could find without spending stupid money.
Don't use a charger on a battery that's just sitting. If you have a garage queen, just use a Deltran Battery Tender. I have a JR version that I keep on all my sedentary vehicles. I got 8 years out of one of my motorcycle batteries and 13 out of one in my truck. Both sat more than they were driven.

I tried the battery tender down here in FL on my 02' Vette one summer. The next year when I brought it back to IA, the battery just died in my son's drive, after a 80 mi drive. NO warning. Didn't even seem like a battery failure.... but it was. Battery lasted only 4 years and about 18K mi. Knock on wood... but the G8 batteries are holding up better for me. I disconnect both ends when stored, and put charger on for an hr or so. Then just hook up and go... 6 mo later.
I'm sure if I had been here and used the tender occasionally, it would have been fine... but leaving it on with the battery hooked up in a HOT FL garage didn't work as well as I'd hoped.

It was a fluke Bob... My parents have two vehicles that sit in FL all year long and from May till November they sit disconnected with a Deltran tender on them. I don't think they've replaced a battery in years. The big thing is to disconnect them incase for some weird reason there's a short in the electrical system or something. A tender will NOT overcharge a battery. It will shut down and just tickle it every once in a while to keep the battery healthy.

Optima's used to be the shiznit, but since going mainstream, they aren't the same IMO. If you want an AMAZING battery, look at Odyssey. THOSE are the shit!!! At around 300 bucks, they should be. Interstate is another great battery at a more reasonable price.
I got 13 years out of my Motorcraft battery in my F150. Many of those years were it sitting with a Deltran tender hooked to it and it NOT disconnected from the car.

The original battery is most definitely not an AGM, as several people who've had theirs leak (including me) can attest. Advance Auto sells a house-brand AGM that's manufactured by Johnson Controls. When I bought it a few months ago, it was still 3 yr free replacement, 7-yr prorate. Here's the one I bought:
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_battery-group-size-h7-850-cca-autocraft-gold-agm_10210826-p?navigationPath=L1*14920|L2*15000
None of the stores around me carried it or even knew anything about it. But because it's AGM, they can ship it to you if you order it off the website. Be sure to check all their available coupon codes - I got 20% off mine back in December, so it saved me $40 or so.

X2 on the Odyssey batteries. I have killed the one in my Jeep numerous times over the past few years (chasing down a power drain issue which is now resolved) and it keeps coming back for more. Got it in 2003 and it's still going strong. Keep a proper charge on them and they will last a good while. Deka also makes a nice battery as well.
If you have a Sears local to your area, check out the DieHard Platinums. They are made by Odyssey and they just slap the DieHard stickers on them. Need a battery box or battery mount for your new battery? No problem. Check out the battery boxes from Artec Industries or RuffStuff Specialties. Both of those companies boxes are made here in the USA.

The CarQuest batts are made by EastPenn who makes the DEKA in the USA. I just put a DEKA battery in my motorcycle that I'm selling. It's a nice battery. I asked Sears about that as I knew that too, but they'd have to order it and blah blah blah... CQ had it in stock and had a higher CCA than the Duralast. I'm happy with it overall and when the car becomes my garage queen, I'll just stick a Deltran battery tender on it and it should last for years.

IIRC the autozone Duralast is made by Energizer corporation.
And their AGM battery is the same as the newer Delco's and the someone else.
Also I have heard mixed reviews on optima batteries of late and honestly I've never been a fan. for the money I can get autozone (gold at the time) and have them replaced prorated long before I bothed with the optima.
Deka and some other company make a lighter weight battery that fits our cars and there is a post about them somewhere in the MX section IIRC
By the way for the rest of you what battery number did you use?
I installed an Odyssey PC1220-A a few weeks ago. It didn't take as long to dismantle the trunk as I thought it would. The 1220 is a direct fit, no modifications to the bracket or box were required. Dropped it in, and it fred right up. I charged it with my ctek overnight since it had been packaged 6 months ago according to the label on the box. Unfortunately there isn't a sears diehard platinum in a 94r size, since the platinums are rebadged odysseys and would be significantly cheaper.

Optimas are junk, only good thing they have going is that they can be mounted in different positions with no acid leaking (gel) durability wise they are trash, have been since I first tried them out circa 2000. I have had good luck with Deka, interstate, and Odyssey (still running original delco in my 09 gt)

I installed an Optima yellow top I purchased from advance for around $150 using a coupon code. Had to alter the mounting/hold down bracket but that only took 10-15 mins. Over the years I've had nothing but good experiences with Optima batteries. I've read that "quality has gone downhill" or even some calling them "crap" but, it's working good for me for the last 12-14 months and for years in my other vehicles.
I would recommend buying the battery with the best warranty.

I think my car's battery is getting weak, so this thread is nice and timely.
I don't have my car's trunk open in front of me, but as I recall, the drain tube for the battery connects to the battery itself and then runs out of the trunk compartment. There's no secondary cap on the battery that can be transferred from battery to battery, in other words.
So for the battery suggestions that are being tossed around, such as Duralast or Optima, do they have drain tube connections? Or are they open-vent batteries?
In short, is there any reason to worry about a battery designed to vent to the atmosphere versus a tube?

The Optima batteries are "gel cell" (http://www.optimabatteries.com/en-us/products/?utm_source=Bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Bing+Non+Branded+Products&utm_term=gel+cell+batteries) and do not have a vent of any kind. I have one in my '72 Opel and another in my '06 Solstice and both have given me many years of very dependable service and strong cranking amps. I also like that they can be brought back to life from almost dead with a Deltran Battery Tender (http://batterytender.com/). I feel they are worth the money.

From what I've read, the recent (5 years ago) sale of Optima and relocation to Mexico of some of it's facilities has resulted in a less than stellar battery. I can confirm that mine was a Mexican red top, and it failed in 3 years of LIGHT use.

the brand sold at Oreilly (Super start) Platinum (AGM) has a vent tube hole. You remove the tube from the stocker, and swap it to the new battery.

Alright gents, I did go with a Duralast Platinum AGM battery from AutoZone. 20% coupon got me $36 off, which was nice. Car's now not quite so sluggish on the start, though I'll admit it didn't jump to life like I expected. Old battery was definitely looking like it was on its way out, though. It was crusty around the top and on the edges and left some nice crustiness in the battery holder tray.

Luckily, I was able to just transfer the vent tube over from the old battery to the new. So that ended up being a non-issue.
