On H&C Ls motor i always run a tr55 or Tr6. Just drive the normal for a few hundred miles, i always change the oil first 50-100 miles then at 500 and call it good.

Best to use conventional oil, not a synthetic until it's broken in. I would use a 10w30. When Livernois installed their mini-stroker in my buddy's car, that's what they used.

I just buy the cases of 24qts of 5W30 & 10W30 for $25 or less at the big box stores.

Cam break-ins, turbos, oil changes / flushes if whatever car sits, etc.

I generally do the break in at 100, 500, and 1000 [and if i feel it is required...2500]...and recycle the oil.

But that may be overkill.

Who built the motor, Mast, Livernois? Use their specific break in if there is a warranty involve. I agree with the posts above, 100 miles and then 500 miles. Then your probably good till your 3000 miles. Then switch to synthetic. You can buy Gibb's break in oil also and go by there break in recommendations

What MI said above... Keep it in all RPM ranges as well, no highway.

Rotella is some good breakin oil....

The only problem with Rotella is its zinc level is still high enough to kill a catalytic converter so be aware of that. I run Rotella in almost everything I own without a Cat.

opps.... I didnt even think about that... I dont have cats... I didnt know that but it makes sense... the properties if the rotella is great for a new rebuilt engine... didnt think about the cats though..

Rotella T 15w40 is for normal engines.... I know lots of builders that use that for breakin.... but again, not sure about how it effects cats...

I'm pretty sure Rotella changed their formula a few years back and cut out a lot of the ZDDP that made it so good in the past. Brad Penn is the only oil that I know of now that still contains a lot of zinc.

Make sure you check the gap...these come gapped at .054 IIRC.

They did! I emailed Bob the oil guy and he said it's still more than recommended for gas engines with cats though. Using it for 150 miles is one thing, but using it for long periods is a WHOLE OTHER story IMO.

I would hope anyone with common sense just doesn't grab a set of plugs and throw them in before gaping them or checking them.

I guarantee it has happened...

The Zinc level wont hurt the cats for the short break-in period. The levels of Zinc in Rotella might hurts the cats if run thousands of miles.

Guys, Zinc is coming back! Quaker State has it back in their "Defy" product and the labs have proven it safe enough to meet OEM testing and standards in cats and O2's (Lambda sensors). This stuff is "great" for minimizing wear!

put me in the 100, 500 camp as well

but I also use one higher viscosity grade for the first 2 changes. so for an LS variant its going to be 10w30 and I usually get some form of Mobil Dive clean 500 or Valvoline basic oil for those changes.

On my high compression ls1 build I did 100, 500, and 1000 before swapping over to synthetic. I was still getting bits on the oil pan plug magnet at 1000. after that it was clean with synthetic even after road course duty.

Just drive the normal for a few hundred miles

Please clarify. Normal for me, or like a normal person should drive?

you see more zinc and other additives in the higher mileage oils because they are closer to, or over the mandatory 100K mile warranty on emission control parts.

I suspect in the fine print there are clauses that let them off of warranty issues if used on lower mileage cars.
