I am looking to start upgrading the speakers in the car. I have done the Bass Mod and Sub Wiring Mod, which improved things greatly, but still find the system lacking a nice clear powerful sound once the volume starts to creep up. My trunk is a often used part of the car so extra sub boxes are not an option.
I have little-to-no sound system knowledge other than the cheap stuff I threw into my cars when I was a kid. I don't mind doing the work but don't really know what I am looking for where equipment is concerned. To keep the options reasonable I would like to spend no more than $1000, preferably as little as possible.
Ideas?

I put the polk's in all four doors did new tweeters and turned off the center speaker and its a huge difference. the polk are not top of the line but they sound really good if your not a audio freak plus they are cost friendly. Way less then a grand, do that and spend the rest on go fast mods

You can get a nice component set from Crutchfield or otherwise for a good price...
I generally like Pioneer and Polk products...have had the same set of Polks in two cars now...probably 10+ years old and still kick!
Just bought Pioneer components for my truck earlier this year, still haven't installed them though...but reviews were great.
I am sure a few others will chime in on what they have installed.

I highly recommend the JBL P662s. They are rated at 2 ohms (55 rms) so they work well with our factory system. Plus the build quality is excellent.

How are CerwinVega products these days if anyone on here knows...didn't know they were still around...
Nice price on JBLs.

Nice price on JBLs.
Not sure about the CerwinVegas. I would stick with 2 ohm speakers though, that's what the factory system came with. Most aftermarkets are 4 ohms, so if you try to replace them you can lose some of the power/volume.
Infinity and JBL are very respectable companies (both owned by Harmon Kardon) and they manufacture 2 ohm speakers. The JBLs are a little more efficient and put out a little more base.

VERY nice price. Should I replace all speakers? Just the doors (that's what these are for, right?)? Add an amp to better subs? If I'm getting into the doors and dash I would rather replace enough components to be amazed by the difference, not just somewhat impressed. I will also be getting into the rear deck to install the remote range extender so would like to change the subs, if necessary, at the same time.

I did both the front and rear at the same time. If you replace only one, I would do the fronts first. I also added dynamat around the speakers and this really prevents them from rattling over time.
I didn't add an amplifier to my system. I still have the stock subs in the back but I did the bass mod (do a quick search and you'll find it). I'm not looking to win any sound competitions, but overall I'm really pleased with the sound.

Just to clarify, when you say you did both front and rear at the same time, you just mean all four doors, correct? Or did you get in to replace other components as well?

Just the doors but all four of them. Sounds great so far but I plan to do some dynomatting this coming weekend to tone down the rattling.

I never got around to doing the dynomatting although I have it ready. I was under the rear deck trim this weekend extending the fob antenna and thought to do the matting at the same time. I spent a lot of time tightening down the modules on the rear deck that were loose after padding them and securing the XM and ONSTAR cabling that I had just tucked up through the trunk when I removed them. HUGE difference. I ran out of time but when I find some more I will definitely properly mat the rear deck.
Songs like Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys were somewhat embarrassing to play in the car at excessive volumes...not anymore! Now I can show off my dated musical preferences with pride! ;-)
