Ok I have a question. I have been looking at some figures and was thinking.
Can our l76 (ls2) block be turned into a ls3. The only difference I see between the two motors is bore. L76 is 4.00 and ls3 is 4.06. They both share the same stroke. So why couldn't I just bore my motor to a 4,06 stick ls3 pistons in it and call it a day. Or is there something else that I'm missing.

are you asking if youll have an ls3 at that point? the answer is no. ls3's use a different cam and dont have dod either. youll have 6.2 litre l76 :)

I Understand that. I'm in the process of doing a build and wanted to swap in a ls3. But if I can find some cheap ls3 pistons then I would be golden and pretty much have a ls3 in my car just with a l76 black part number

And after a ls3 can swap n dod delete it would be an ls3 per say ..

Cylinder block and casting is different from what I believe.... you can bore a Ls3 out more than a L76.... Ls3 you can get 427... but L76 you can only get 403 and be safe..... and .060" on a bore is alot!!!! but yea you could machine out the bore but thats not so cheap or as easy as stroking.... but I havent heard of anyone doing it... so there must be a reason....probaby just money?... why would you spend money on boring, pistons, etc..... to get just a Ls3 ?.... not sure also if casting wall is thinner maybe....

L76 with DoD delete is more or less an LS2, not an LS3

Dod delete/cam and you have a solid 6.0 you don't need that .2 liter it's not going to make enough difference. Add boost

for the cost of machine work and pistons +(rod bearings, main bearings, rings) assembly,I bet that you would be real close to just buying a LS3 short block. you would back on the road faster by just buying a short block

I ment if you decided to bore it out

With a aluminum L76 6.0L .010"-.015" over the stock bore is pretty much the max. Going +.060" would leave the cylinder liners dangerously thin. The only 6.0L block you could do this with would be a 6.0L iron block that also has a stock 4.000" bore but is capable of being bored out to a 4.080" bore.

I'm more of a "bottom line" kinda guy... I don't care what the engine is as long as it's got power. Why the interest in an LS3, what can it do that an L76 can't?

yea some people are hung up on names and stuff like that... stroke a L76 and blow away a stock LS3... less money, less time, and more power with stroking... just cant call it a LS3....but who really cares.... :)....

Still are able to call it an LS series motor though, so there's that. Same general SBC design that's been around for a LOOOOONG time.
At this point I'd be more interested in an LT-1 (3rd gen), but I'm sure those will be pretty expensive for a while.

Or, do the smart thing and buy a stroked LS3. :)

I always dreamed of having an LS7 in my G8. But by the time I buy the motor and what not. I can have a fast L76. Nobody will say " Oh shits I got beat by a L76!" LOL

Agreed, My buddies LS3 swapped GTO with the Smaller cam and than whats in mine and stock heads and intake walks away from me after 90mph.... That .2L really makes a big difference.

My plans as of right now are to swap mine out with a stroked LS3. We'll see though...

Im trying to decide between a 416 and 429 ls3 stroker. Big cam, super flowing heads. Let it eat....
