So looking at finally swapping out the DOD and am interested in changing the stock oil pump. So the question is Melling makes two different pumps. One high pressure and one high volume. What would you suggest for just a cam swap at this point? Nothing crazy going on at this point, stock heads and intake cam specs are 223/230 .638/.609" 114LSA +3. In addition would you even bother with swapping out the oil pump?
Thanks all

Found this from Crazy Paul but would still like to get some advice on changing it out.......
I was thinking about the L76 high volume oil pump (1.24in/rev) V LS2/L98 oil pump (0.95in/rev). You guys with the G8-GT wont have to worry about changing the oil pump if you remove the DOD hardware. G8-GT has an 8+ litre oil pan.
The reason it was a problem for some in OZ is because we used the L76 to retrofit into older cars. Up until the start of 2006 the Holdens and HSV's had the front sump oilpan (to clear the steering rack) which held a total of 5.7 or 6 litres.
Now with an L76 with DOD hardware removed + an oil pump which pumped about 18% more volume than normal, combined with only a 6 litre front pick-up sump......under certain conditions it was possible to pump the sump dry.
[I remember now reading about a guy who found this out while doing a really long burnout going up a hill].
I guess for burnout man, most of his oil was at the rear of the old 6L sump away from the front pick-up.......then the L76 oil pump was pumping the only available oil to the top of the engine, faster than it could drain back to the pick-up at the front of the engine.

Steve,
When I cammed my stock motor I reused the L76 high volume pump with no issues. But if you really want to go aftermarket then you want the Melling high volume pump, #M10296, which is what I'm using in my LS3 engine.

Thanks for the advice Dan. Ultimately I would like to procharge and don't know if changing out the oil pump now, if it is even needed, would be a good idea. How are you enjoying your build in this lake of a state we have?

I'll second that!!!
That's the model of Meling pump I used for my DOD delete and it worked great.

I used the GM high volume oil pump.

You're really stuck in the middle with the available choices.
If the AFM hardware is gone then you do not need high volume anymore. Case in point LS3 (or any non-AFM) engine does not use a high volume oil pump from factory.
Then because you've got an AFM relief valve (inside the oilpan) which starts relieving oil straight back to the oilpan starting at 55psi and not supposed to build past 75psi while venting......then it's pointless installing a pump which puts out high pressure.
If keeping the AFM relief valve while deleting the remainder of the AFM hardware then my choice would be the high pressure pump fitted with the lowest pressure range spring. Pump should come with 1 spring fitted and one spare spring of a different range.

I'm running the Melling High Volume Pump (M10296). It comes with 2 springs, so you can run stock pressure, or you can run a higher pressure.
I'm running higher pressure.
